NAME-DROPPING LIL JON PLANS TO ROCK WITH MARIAH
Lil Jon's new philosophy on making hit albums: Why wait until you're almost done recording to secure the big-name collaborators? Jon just started recording his Crunk Rock LP in a Las Vegas studio, and he already has a few aces up his sleeve.
"I think me and R. Kelly are about to do some new stuff together," Jon said backstage at the Boost Mobile RockCorps concert at Atlanta's Fox Theatre. "Two weeks into my record, and we already hooking up. I got with him on my last album, but I waited until I was almost at the end. Hooking up with him early is going to be crazy. I'm supposed to get one with Mariah and I got one with Snoop that's crazy."
"The album is going to be stupid - as they say in the Bay, 'dumb, yellow bus,' " he added. "It's going to be that crazy. I'm just trying to give people good music on this album. Try something different. Just experiment. People are scared to try things. I'm gonna give them some stuff they would expect so they don't look at me like I'm crazy, but I'mma give them something fresh."
There's no set release date on Crunk Rock, but Jon hopes it drops in the fall, maybe as early as September. (MTV News | The Mariah Carey Archives) |

MARIAH CALLS IN TO CANADA'S MUCHMUSICMariah called in to MuchMusic (the Canadian version of MTV) during the MuchOnDemand show yesterday to speak about the extra tour dates that she added in Canada. She thanked her Canadian fans for being so supportive and said that she loves coming to Canada, and hopes to drop in to MuchMusic during her stay in Toronto. Mariah has called in a few weeks earlier, to promote the first round of presales.
This tour has the most Canadian dates that Mariah has ever done. The August 13th Toronto show is already sold out. MuchMusic is also doing their share in promoting this tour. On their website, they have ads and banners promoting the tour; and an exclusive presale opportunity for shows in Toronto, Calgary and Winnipeg. Much viewers get a shot at tickets before anyone else. MADONNA VS MARIAH? A spokesperson for Madonna has denied she "laughed hysterically" after hearing news of poor ticket sales for Mariah Carey's upcoming US tour. Reports in the American press suggest the music icon took great pleasure in the apparent news of her pop rival struggling to fill the venues for her upcoming live dates.
New York Daily News claims Madonna holds a grudge against Carey, following a disagreement between the pair earlier on in their careers. "Madonna laughed hysterically. She has been asking her tour promoters to email her Mariah's sales" a "source" told the paper.
However, Madonna's spokeswoman denied the reports, insisting: "She has no negative feelings toward Mariah." Meanwhile, Mariah's spokesperson said the live dates were set to be a great success, commenting: "Her tour is selling well. She's cancelled a few dates so she can add shows in larger cities." BILLBOARD R&B/HIP-HOP FINALISTSJamie Foxx tops the list of finalists for this year's Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Awards. The artist, who took home a best actor Oscar for his portrayal of Ray Charles in "Ray", is a contender in eight categories, including top R&B/hip-hop album and top R&B/hip-hop artist.
The awards ceremony will close Billboard's seventh annual R&B/Hip-Hop Conference, to be held Sept. 6-8 in Atlanta at the Renaissance Waverly. With seven nods each, Mariah Carey and Mary J. Blige vie against each other in all of the same categories, including top R&B/hip-hop album and top R&B/hip-hop album artist. The latter category includes West, who is a finalist in seven categories as well. His additional mentions include top R&B/hip-hop album and hot rap track for his work with Foxx on "Gold Digger".
The Billboard R&B/Hip-Hop Awards honor the most popular albums, songs and artists as well as the top songwriters, producers and major/independent labels. The awards are based on sales data from Nielsen SoundScan and radio airplay information for Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems.
This year's finalists and winners reflect the performance of recordings on the Billboard R&B/hip-hop and rap charts during the one-year period from May 28, 2005 through the issue dated May 20, 2006. New artists are those who have not appeared on a Billboard album chart prior to the March 26, 2005, issue or have not been a new artist finalist in the past.

GRAND TOUR VS. NOT SO GRAND? Madonna doesn't forget. Years ago, Mariah Carey paid Her Madgesty a backhanded compliment by telling an interviewer how she grew up listening to the songs of the 11-years-older star. So, sources claim, it's no wonder the 47-year-old diva is taking delight in measuring her ticket sales against those of the 36-year-old songbird.
Last week, a spy tells us, Madonna was getting ready to go onstage in Chicago when someone told her Carey had been forced to cancel three tour dates. (Billboard reports that Madge's "Confessions" tour is on track to gross a record-breaking $200 million.) "Madonna laughed hysterically," according to a source. "She has been asking her tour promoters to E-mail her Mariah's numbers!"
Madonna is also said to have been tickled to hear that Carey didn't appreciate her musical director, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson, revealing on TV that he'd been inspired by Madonna's show in L.A. Madonna's rep, Liz Rosenberg, argues that Madonna doesn't give a fig about Carey's ticket sales - and "she has no negative feelings toward Mariah".
A Carey rep argues, "Her tour is selling really well. She's canceled a few cities so she can add shows in larger cities. Toronto and Vancouver are sold out. So is her Madison Square Garden show. She's adding a Jones Beach show Sept. 3." (New York Daily News)

MARIAH FEATURED ON WORLD CUP OFFICIAL ALBUM Mariah Carey is featured on the FIFA World Cup Germany 2006 official album "Voices from the FIFA World Cup,." Mariah appears in this album with her #1 hit "Hero."

THE MISADVENTURES OF MARIAH Quick trivia question: Who is the only music artist to have more #1 songs than Mariah Carey? It's not Madonna. Not Elvis. Nope, not even Michael. Only The Beatles have scored more #1 songs than Mimi. And now, after three years off the road, Mariah's come to Hollywood to rehearse for her new tour. But while she clearly has a plan, getting kidnapped at the airport by Access Hollywood's Billy Bush was probably not part of it. With that, let the adventures of Billy and Mimi begin.
Billy made his way to the airport to greet Mariah as she landed. While she thought she was headed straight to rehearsals for her summer tour, Billy had something a bit more adventurous in mind for the newly svelte Mariah and her pooch Jack. "I hope you are in a flexible mood. We might take a detour - or two," Billy grinned.
She would soon find out that was the understatement of the year as we kidnapped Mariah for an adventure in her tricked-out tour bus. "So I guess this is your ride?" Billy said upon seeing the fully furnished, lavishly decked out vehicle. "This is my temporary home," Mariah said.
The first stop on the misadventure of Mariah - the entertainment capitol of L.A.: Universal Studios Hollywood for the "Mummy" ride of a lifetime. "Does anyone know this woman?" Billy asked the crowd of theme park-goers, eliciting a scream from the fans who immediately recognized Mariah and began snapping photos. "Are they going to come on the roller coaster with us?" Mariah laughed.
Soon, Billy saw what it was like to be a superstar as he found himself swept along on what, for Mariah, is an everyday occurrence - surrounded by eager fans. And as Billy saw, Mariah is truly a giver. She stopped and waved to the fans, even chatting with a few. "You're so beautiful," one young fan yelled. "So are you," Mariah smiled back.
And while getting on the ride, Mariah made the summer (actually make that the life) of an unsuspecting fan, as she sat down right next to a young lady and buckled up. "I'm going to cry," the woman said.
For obvious safety reason, our cameras couldn't accompany Billy and Mariah on the ride, but our microphone did. "Billy get your hand off my shoulder," Mariah joked. "Sorry honey, I'm scared," he replied. And after the ride, it was more madness as the two tried to weave their way through an intense crush of fans. "You gotta love a random amusement park stop by," Mariah said. "It's like a drive-by amusement park moment." "It's awesome," Billy agreed.
As they make their way back to the bus, it's more hordes of fans to navigate. And after stopping to sign an autograph for a cute little girl, and getting rid of one overly aggressive grown man with a camera, they finally make their way onto the bus. "A success," Billy notes. "A little chaos. A little action. And everyone's in one piece."
But little did they know things were just heating up as they headed off to their next stop - the Hollywood Walk of Fame for a little star gazing. And sure enough, once again, the fans took notice of who was there right away. "I think they knew we were coming," Billy said, as they stepped foot off of the bus and onto the sidewalk. "It looks like a few of your closest friends are here to say hello."
Try thousands of friends, all cramming the sidewalk to catch a glimpse and take a photo with Mariah. Then, Billy unveiled his next surprise. "We are taking you somewhere very special," he told her. "Ok, what are we doing?" Mariah wondered. "Your idol is Marilyn Monroe," Billy said. "Yes. I'm a very big fan of hers," Mariah confirmed. "Well, we are going to pay tribute and visit her foot and hand prints on the Walk of Fame," Billy revealed. "Oh get out of here! I've never been there before," she beamed.
As they made their way to Marilyn's famous prints, Mariah was curious to see if hers matched up. "Let's see if they match," Billy suggested. "They definitely don't match because I think my feet are bigger," she laughed. As far as her hands? "I'm afraid to bend over. There are a few too many people here," she joked.
"Am I the greatest date or what?" Billy asked. "Aww Billy, nobody else does this," she smiled. "He is the best date ever." But alas, it was finally time to drop Mariah off at the sound stage for her tour rehearsals. "That was very fun," Mariah told Billy. "The adventures of Mimi and Billy are over and now let the adventures of Mimi begin," he said. "Alright good. I've got to get focused to go on tour but I thank you for my adventure with Billy," she smiled to the camera. "Nobody else does this but you, so I thank you." (Access Hollywoord)

MARIAH SURPRISES CROWDS IN LA Mariah Carey takes a break from her tour rehearsal schedule to make unexpected visits to popular Hollywood destinations. Tourists at Universal Studios Hollywood and the Walk of Fame were treated to an encounter they won't soon forget.
Access Hollywood host Billy Bush "kidnapped" Mariah Carey from the airport, pulling her away from rehearsals for her upcoming tour to visit tourist spots. Carey, who has more No. 1 singles than any other female artist, was whisked through the screaming crowds at Universal Studios Hollywood by Bush, heading straight for "The Revenge of the Mummy".
"You gotta love a random amusement park stop by," Carey said. "It's like a drive-by amusement park moment." More fans awaited the pair when Carey's tour bus stopped in front of the Hollywood Walk of Fame, where the pop diva would visit the handprints of her idol Marilyn Munroe. "I think they knew we were coming," Bush said.
Carey's Pepsi Smash Live show will rock Hollywood's Kodak Theatre next month, while the North American leg of her Adventures of Mimi tour kicks off August 5 in Miami. (The Celebrity Cafe) |

THE EMANCIPATION OF BILLY BUSH My adventures with Mariah Carey begin tonight. I picked her up at the airport recently... she's here for a month to rehearse for her upcoming U.S. tour with her musical director, Randy Jackson. I am pleased to report she's "on" and I think more great things are coming for and from her.
I have done several shoots with Mariah. When I first made her aquaintance, she was in her "slump." "Glitter" had bombed in the U.S. and "Charmbracelet" after it didn't fare much better.
My impression was that she was over-handled: people in the camp were nervous about the future and that made her generally uptight. Well, she turned things around, and I think she did it by finally shedding the last holds that her former husband had on her. Used to following direction about "what people want," she began making music she loved.
"The Emancipation of Mimi," the top album of 2005 by most barometric measures, has led to "The Adventures of Mimi," a U.S. tour that starts August 5th in Miami. So I hijacked her when she landed and we went to Universal Studios, rode a rollercoaster, then went to the Walk of Fame and gave tourists what they never see when they hit Hollywood Boulevard: a huge star! She was loose, willing to "go with it"... the crowd went crazy and it was a blast.
Mariah is fun, really funny and self-deprecating - and thanks to her "morsel diet" (sinful foods allowed, but only a forkful), she's looking strong. Tune in. She's a new girl.
Make sure to tune in to Access Hollywood tonight for Billy Bush's interview with Mariah! Click here to find out when the show airs in your area. (Access Hollywood)

SCAM CLAIMS MARIAH CAREY PERFORMANCEWhat seemed like a fun event for a good cause turned out to be a scam. An organization out of Greensboro claimed star Mariah Carey was coming to the Triad to perform at a charity event.
Matt Cecil was among those buying tickets to see Carey at Club Odyssey in Winston-Salem. He said he bought four tickets after learning of the event from a flyer posted at the club. The flyer said "United Talented People of Pride" and it claimed Carey would perform at a breast cancer benefit at the club.
Cecil said he paid $30 each for the tickets. Club Odyssey tried calling the group, as did WXII 12 News. But its numbers were disconnected and the organization's Web site no longer exists. The people who bought tickets were left high and dry.
Cecil said he doesn't hold the club responsible for the scam. The Better Business Bureau has no record of "United Talented People of Pride." (WXII12.com) |

MARIAH AT JAY LENO SHOWLast night, June 19th, Mariah Carey stopped by "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno," which airs everynight through NBC. Mariah talked about her tour and her brand-new bus, which will be used to travel throughout the country. She also talked about her dog, Jack, and how he swims and will join her during the tour.
Mariah revealed she loves pizza, and that she thinks the best pizza is from New York, and of course Italy. However, she also said she is following a strict diet and that she doesn't know how much weight she has lost. During the interview, Jay Leno asked her about her shoes; she answered it was nothing compared to Jay's car collection. (Mariah Hero | Mariah Connection) |

JERMAINE DUPRI PROMISES MARIAH, JANET DUET ON NEW ALBUM "I got a mean idea, so look for it," JD says about planned duet on Jackson’s 20 Years Old. Earlier this month, Jermaine Dupri demonstrated he’s a true showman by bringing out Mariah Carey and Janet Jackson during his set at the Summer Jam radio festival in New Jersey. Now, Dupri is thinking about how to pull the ultimate trump card and get the two legends on the same song.
In April, Carey hinted that she was very open to the collaboration. "He never talked to me about that, but if Jermaine has a concept, we should go and write something," she told MTV Radio. "I love Janet. I§ve been a big fan of Janet since "Con-tro-ol!"
On Friday, JD said he is, in fact, developing an idea for Carey and his longtime girlfriend to do it up right on a song. "It’s gonna happen on this record," he said about the collaboration. "Please believe that. I got a mean idea, so look for it. We definitely gonna do a repackage on [Janet’s 20 Years Old] once it comes out. Hopefully it’s successful and people buy into it, then I§m going back in the studio.
What happened was, when I was working with Janet, I got into the zone. This was my first time ever working with her. When I get into my zone with artists, I just want to create and create and create. That’s what happened with me and Mariah [on The Emancipation of Mimi]. We don’t run outta ideas; we keep coming up with sh--. The closer I get to that idea [for Janet and Mariah], the more I know where it should be at. It’s feeling like it§s gonna happen."
Dupri also said the Janet and Mariah record — if he pulls it off — could appear on the initial run of 20 Years Old. "It depends on how quick my mind moves," he said. "We’re mixing records for [20 Years Old]. We’re not done yet. When I did Usher’s My Way album, the last record I created was §You Make Me Wanna ... .§ I§m thinking I might go back in, and I might tamper with it. ... We gotta try to figure it out."
JD hopes to have the Janet and Mariah duet mapped out and recorded before Carey goes on tour this summer. Dupri also said he’s accepted Mariah’s invite to go out on the road with her. He won’t be at every single date, but he promises to pop up here and there and support his homie. "I’mma go to the hot spots," he said of the tour. "She’s going to Miami first. I’m definitely gonna be at that show. I’m definitely gonna be in New York, in Atlanta. That’s my partner. Whatever she needs me to do, I’m there."
When he’s not onstage, Jermaine already has a full plate of production scheduled for the rest of the year. He’s working on a slew of his So So Def artists, including Johnta Austin, Manish Man, T. Waters and Young Capone. Bow Wow’s next album is on Dupri’s to-do list, as are records from 3LW, JoJo, Ludacris, Young Jeezy, Frankie J, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony, Nelly, Usher ("We gonna start on his record at the end of the year") and Mariah Carey once she gets off tour. STAR JONES DEFENDS MARIAH’S BLACKNESS ONComic Sandra Bernhard ran into brick wall trying to rehash her old ‘Mimi’ joke. Star Jones Reynolds had to bite her tongue to keep from cursing out comedian Sandra Bernhard on “The View” Friday morning.
Bernhard has made jokes in the past about biracial singer Mariah Carey appearing to cash in on her blackness only when her more mainstream pop material became passé. Star, reading from the pre-interview notes on her blue cards, asked Bernhard to explain why she is now claiming responsibility for the success of Carey’s album, “The Emancipation of Mimi.”
Bernhard said it was her jokes eight years ago about Carey “being black only when it’s convenient” that led to the singer’s nervous breakdown, which eventually resulted in this current emancipation.
Trying to remain calm, Star hit Bernhard with a “girl please” and said Carey has always been open about being black. Bernhard joked to the audience that Star was about to go off on her. Star smiled and said, “I look too cute today to be going off on you,” then rolled her eyes back toward co-host Barbara Walters to continue on.
Walters said that Carey spoke openly about her African American father during their interview eight years ago. Bernhard finally gave up on the whole thing, shouting, “It’s a joke,” and telling Star she didn’t set up the story right.” (EurWeb) |

CAREY: "I DON'T NEED HELP DRINKING WATER" Pop superstar Mariah Carey has laughed off reports she ordered an assistant help her drink water at a recent album signing. During the London event, the singer was photographed drinking water from a glass held up to her mouth by an employee.
The 36-year-old says, "That is so, ugh... I was at a record signing and I signed about 3,000 records. Most artists will go for maybe half and hour, then they leave everybody standing there. I always feel guilty doing that, so I stay for a long time. I'm signing with one hand and shaking somebody else's hand, so someone tapped me to take a sip of water, and then they took a picture. But believe me, I'd much rather hold my own glass! I can't even get a proper assistant, how am I gonna get a cup-holder?" (PR Inside)

MARIAH GRABS 4 RIAA RINGTONE AWARDSThe Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA) today announced the formal launch of a Master Ringtone Sales Award, updating its 47-year old Gold and Platinum program to recognize the growing popularity of enjoying music through cellular phones.
Some 128 titles are included in the inaugural group of certifications, encompassing tracks from artists on all the major record companies and representing a variety of musical genres. Specifically, the RIAA awarded 84 Gold, 40 Platinum and four Multi-Platinum Master Ringtone certifications.
Ringtones are the original recording, rather than a synthesized instrumental version, of a hit song. Following the lead of the existing program, tracks will be certified Gold (500,000 downloads), Platinum (1 million downloads) and Multi-Platinum (starting at 2 million and following in increments of 1 million thereafter). Four of Mariah’s songs were certified with ringtone awards: We Belong Together - Platinum, Don't Forget About Us - Gold, Shake It Off - Gold, and Always Be My Baby - Gold. (RIAA | Mariah Daily) |

CRISTAL FACES BOYCOTT FROM HIP-HOP COMMUNITYThe expensive beverage, Cristal Champagne was the 8th most mentioned brand on Billboard's Top 100 chart in 2005 with 35 namedrops. The brand has been mentioned in songs by such artists as Mariah Carey, Jay-Z, Kanye West, Trina, Lloyd Banks and The Game. The company, however, views its embrace by the hip hop community with "curiosity and serenity."
In a special edition of The Economist Magazine, the managing director of Louis Roderer Cristal described the rap community’s promotion of the drink as "unwelcome attention." "What can we do?" said managing director Frédéric Rouzaud in the article titled Bubbles & Bling. "We can't forbid people from buying it. I'm sure Dom Perignon or Krug would be delighted to have their business."
In reaction to the statement made by Rouzaud, Jay-Z and his upscale sports lounge, The 40/40 Club, have announced that they will no longer be serving Cristal Champagne and Jay-Z will further help lead the boycott against Cristal Champagne in the world of hip-hop. "I view his comments as racist and will no longer support any of his products through any of my various brands including The 40/40 Club nor in my personal life." (MTV News | EurWeb) |

CAREY LAUGHS OFF HOUSTON DUET RUMOURS Mariah Carey has rebuffed speculation she plans to record a duet with Whitney Houston, in a bid to reignite the troubled singer's career. Houston has been dogged by reports questioning her health and alleged drug use in recent months, but Carey insists she is not aware the star is experiencing any problems.
She says, "I did not say (we'd record this duet), because to me that sounds like I'm saying she has a problem, and I wouldn't say that. I haven't spoken to Whitney in a long time. When I knew her, she was really fun and cool and just one of the most talented people in the world, so, of course, I support her, but I would never say she's going through a hard time because she never told me that." MADGE AND MIMI IN JAPAN The two biggest female pop artists in the world, Madonna and Mariah Carey, announced Japan tours practically on top of each other. Madonna did it first. She'll be making her first Japan tour in 13 years, if you want to call two concerts a tour. Madge will be wowing them at the Osaka Dome on September 16 and the Tokyo Dome September 20. With top-end ticket prices peaking at about $500, there's a lot to be wowed about.
Mariah Carey is more of a familiar face in Japan. She played there three years ago. But now that she's on the wings of her biggest-selling album ever, Mimi can probably guarantee filling Japan's biggest hall, the Saitama Super Arena, two nights in a row October 20-21. She'll also be doing Nagoya on October 18 and Osaka on October 24-25.
However, neither American singer has received half the buzz that home-girl Hikaru Utada received recently when her own national tour was announced. Her first album in four years, Ultra Blue, was released June 14. She'll embark on an 11-city, 22-date Japan tour in July, which will also include two consecutive nights at the Saitama Super Arena. TIME MAGAZINE INTERVIEWThe Emancipation of Mimi became the best-selling album of 2005. Now Mariah Carey hopes her current tour will extend that career high note. Taken from the June 19, 2006 issue of TIME magazine on newsstands tomorrow.
Rebecca Winters Keegan (for TIME): In high school I washed dishes at your summer camp.
Mariah Carey: Get out!
RWK: Does Camp Mariah have a song?
Mariah: They have a ton of hot cheers.
RWK: How does it feel to be emancipated?
Mariah: There will always be parts of me that need emancipating. But it feels nice to allow yourself to be who you are.
RWK: Do you have any rituals on tour?
Mariah: Rest, humidity and prayer. In New York, I have a steam room with a bed in it. Everything is waterproof.
RWK: What's the first concert you ever saw?
Mariah: I didn't exactly have the funds for concerts. There was a time when the only joy I got was recording my outgoing answering-machine messages. My roommate and I left a message once describing when we had no heat, no water, and the fly-paper situation was bleak. It ended up being the message that the record company heard when they called to sign me. I was mortified.
RWK: You'll play a waitress in a movie called Tennessee. Were you afraid to act again after Glitter?
Mariah: I was honored Lee Daniels called me. He produced The Woodsman and Monster's Ball. He's a risk taker. Obviously it would be a risk in a lot of people's minds to cast me. But he never saw Glitter.
RWK: Have you ever sent dogs running with a high note?
Mariah: No, but I got a letter from a girl who said she was listening to one of my songs and every time I hit a particular high note, the garage door would open or close.
RWK: Thanks, Mariah.
Mariah: Hey, thanks for doing the dishes. (Jam Music) |

MARIAH TAKES ON ANOTHER ACTING VENTUREMariah Carey can point to yet another person who didn’t see her 2001 flop Glitter: the director of Tennessee, her new movie. Carey will play a waitress in Tennessee, directed by Lee Daniels, who produced The Woodsman and Monster’s Ball.
"He’s a risk-taker," Carey told Time for its issue on newsstands Monday. "Obviously it would be a risk in a lot of people’s minds to cast me." Carey’s The Emancipation of Mimi was the best-selling album of 2005, helping to bury the pain of the 2001 film and soundtrack flop Glitter and her breakdown from exhaustion.
But with a tour under way, she’s still busy. And she’s keeping a sense of humour. "I got a letter from a girl who said she was listening to one of my songs and every time I hit a particular high note, the garage door would open or close," she said. The 36-year-old hopes doors continue opening for her. "There will always be parts of me that need emancipating," she said. "But it feels nice to allow yourself to be who you are." (Jam Music) |

BLONDE LUCK If what Jack Allen claims is true, then he's made one of the greatest cinematic finds in recent history. Allen, a former TV executive and devoted fan of Hollywood's golden age, perused the online auction site of a recently deceased studio employee in April of 2005, hoping to find a few pieces of classic memorabilia. He believes he found an original, unreleased recording of a song sung by Marilyn Monroe, just as she was poised at the verge of superstardom.
"It was mixed in with some other records, what they call playback records," Allen says, "which are records that film studios produced that artists would then move their mouths to during filming. There was a set from [the 1953 classic] Gentlemen Prefer Blondes, and among them was this record, 'Down Boy'."
Allen, who currently runs a digital photo lab in Burbank, Calif., and has produced commemorative books on both Monroe and Bette Davis, speculates that the song was considered redundant with the inclusion of the now-legendary number "Diamonds Are a Girl's Best Friend". Allen contacted actor George Chakiris, who appeared as a chorus boy with Monroe in Gentlemen years before winning an Oscar for his performance in West Side Story; Chakiris confirmed that the number was never actually shot. The song did reappear in 1955's Three for the Show, the little-seen final musical (also choreographed by Gentlemen's Jack Cole) of a then-fading Betty Grable, and its original connection to Marilyn eventually slipped quietly into the movie-trivia ether.
"All the die-hard Marilyn fans have heard of this song," says Allen. "There's a lot of legend encircling her about songs that were supposedly recorded and never filmed, or filmed and cut out, the footage that must exist somewhere, all that." Upon receiving the original record, a 78 shellac marked by a faded and yellowed 20th Century Fox sticker set in manual typeface, Allen knew he would need to transfer the recording to something less fragile, stat. "When I got to the studio," he says, "they were afraid to play it, and I had to sign a form. What if it only had one more play in it? But the needle went down, her voice came out, and I just about had a coronary."
A sweet, playful tune by songwriters Hoagy Carmichael and Harold Adamson - its chorus trills, "Down, boy/You're actin' like a new foundlin' pup/And mama don't like you jumpin' up. I swear/You gotta stay down, down, down" - the song does indeed sound like classic Marilyn. And now that the recording is safely transferred to digital, Allen is hoping to get one of her well-known modern fans - among them Gwen Stefani, Mariah Carey, and, perhaps most famously, Madonna - to perform a posthumous duet with the late star, whose 80th birthday would have been last Thursday. With that in mind, Allen has begun contacting a number of celebrity publicists. (Entertainment Weekly)

DJ TRACY YOUNG TO REMIX "FLY LIKE A BIRD" Miami-based DJ Tracy Young, better known for remixing Madonna and currently DJing for all the "Confessions on a Dance Floor" tour after-parties, has revealed in a recent interview with Gay.com that she's working on a remix for Mariah's "Fly Like A Bird."
Your work with Madonna opened so many doors. You then started remixing other artists, including Cyndi, Mariah, etc. What song do you think you helped the most?
I don't think I really helped it, but I do get a lot of compliments of my remix of Cyndi Lauper's "Shine."
You're doing Mariah Carey's "Fly Like a Bird." How is that?
Yeah, we did that, and we're trying to work out the vocals because Mariah's very hands-on about how her vocals sound. We're just trying to see if she's going to recut her vocals or not. But we have the record done. The remix is called, "Fly Like a Bird” (Tracy’s Needin You remix). Find more information about Tracy and her work by logging on to her official website. (Mariah Daily)

MARIAH TO PERFORM IN TUNIS A recent press conference held Thursday morning revealed new details concerning Mariah's concerts in Tunis on July 22 and 24. Intervalle Entertainment in collaboration with the Tunisian Government of Tourism Affairs are bringing Mariah to the El Menzah stadium, with tickets going on sale on Monday, June 12th at the stadium, the El Menzah Center of Cultural Affairs, and various other locations. Tickets will be 35 to 200 dinars (approximately $25 to $150).
Because the concert promoters realize many of the fans will be coming from overseas, especially from Europe, they are considering creating special packages that include airfare, hotel, and admission to both concerts, finally allowing people access from "all four corners of the world," said Ferid Fetni, director of marketing. According to Mariah’s official website at www.mariahcarey.com, the Grammy-winning singer’s ringtone for "We Belong Together" went Platinum this week. "We Belong Together" is off Mariah’s latest album, "The Emancipation of Mimi." Watch for Mariah Carey this summer, as she launches her first headlining US tour in three years. "The Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, The Hits, The Tour" kicks off August 5th in Miami and wraps up on October 10th in Phoenix. (Net Music Countdown) |

MIMI’S NEXT ADVENTURE Hello Keith, I was wondering if you had any more news on Mariah Carey’s upcoming tour, The Adventures of Mimi: the Voice, the Hits, the Tour, such as ticket prices, etc.?
Also, what kind of potential do you think this tour has? Will it be just another one of her flop tours or will this be one of the big tours of the year? Also, what are the stats of Mariah’s past tours? I had also heard that she has a new album in the works. Do you have any information on this? And lastly, where does Mariah’s album sales stand in the U.S., as well as worldwide? Thanks and have a great day! - Adam Holmes, Indianapolis
Hello Adam, Mariah Carey’s tour, titled The Adventures of Mimi: the Voice, the Hits, the Tour, will kick off its North American leg on Aug. 5 in Miami at the American Airlines Arena. The trek is in support of "The Emancipation of Mimi," which was the biggest selling album of 2005 in the U.S., according to Nielsen SoundScan.
Ticket prices for the tour range from $15.50 to $300, depending on the venue and seat location. We found $15.50 tickets at the Pepsi Center in Denver for Sept. 18 and $300 seats at her Trump Taj Mahal date in Atlantic City, N.J., on Aug. 17. However, the majority of the tickets at most venues are priced somewhere in the range of $40 to $150. The $300 tickets at the Taj Mahal are really out of the ordinary and are only priced that way because the venue is much smaller than the rest of the venues she’s playing. The Taj Mahal arena’s maximum capacity is 6,000, while the Pepsi Center in Denver can hold up to 15,000 to 20,000.
Since Carey had such a phenomenal year, it’s likely that the tour could do very well. Historically, however, she hasn’t been a huge draw. Her 2003 tour was scaled back from arenas to theaters after slow initial ticket sales. (According to Carey, the show was altered in order to give fans a more intimate experience.) The trek, dubbed An Intimate Evening With Mariah Carey, grossed $6 million from the 23 dates that were reported to Billboard. Only eight of the 23 shows were sell-outs. Box office information for several of the shows was not reported to Billboard.
Her previous outing, 2000’s Rainbow Tour, grossed $7 million from the nine shows that were reported to Billboard. The trek was a one-night-only affair, and spent only a month in North America, playing arenas. All of the nine shows that were reported to Billboard were sell-outs. Switching gears, we don’t have any information about a new studio album in the works for Carey.
Since SoundScan began tracking sales data in early 1991, Carey has sold 49.1 million albums in the U.S. (including her "Glitter" soundtrack). That number is probably a little less than expected, only because her smash self-titled album was released in the summer of 1990, so a significant chunk of its sales are not accounted for in SoundScan’s database. As for worldwide sales, there isn’t an independent firm that tabulates actual global sales. Generally, one has to rely on information provided by a record label (which can be trumped up) about the number of albums shipped to retail. (Ask Billboard)

GOSSIP: MARIAH DATING A 21-YEAR-OLD? Mariah Carey is said to be dating Robert F Kennedy's grandson. Insiders say the singer, 36, and the youngster, Robert F Kennedy III, who is just 21, were spotted at a New York nightclub. And sources said he seemed smitten with the chart-topping star. A club insider said: "Robert couldn't keep his hands off her. "Mariah may be 15 years older than him but he seemed absolutely taken with him. "She is fascinated by Robert."
The pair was seen at Manhattan's trendy Butter club at the end of May. They reportedly posed for photos together before hitting the dance floor. But Kennedy dynasty insiders are said to be unhappy at the blossoming relationship. One said: "Robert is already getting flack from the family. "They are alarmed at him being drawn into Mariah's jet-set lifestyle. "They are worried about the age difference and that they both live in entirely different worlds."
A spokeswoman for Mariah denied she was dating the youngster. She told the National Enquirer magazine: "She considers him a very nice guy." The young Kennedy hit the headlines in 1999 when he was arrested for indecent exposure after urinating on a pavement next to his parked car. A passenger in the car was arrested for possession of marijuana. Robert was ordered to pay US$100 in costs after the judge reduced the charges to disorderly conduct.
The family insider added: "He made a silly mistake and he has learned his lesson." Mariah and ex-husband, music boss Tommy Mottola, officially announced their separation in 1997 and their divorce became final the following year. Robert F Kennedy, the younger brother of John F Kennedy, was assassinated in 1968. (Splash | Mariah Hero MB)

PAPARAZZI REPORT - DAY 2 Task 1: TRL at Poolside: I left work early and had lunch in a cab on my way to this hotel TRL was going to be at. But, I was late again! I saw Mimi's crew parked outside, and that meant Mimi was already inside. So, I killed sometime chatting with her people and other fans as well as paparazzi with big cameras. I and two other fans spoke to Rachel, and seeing one of us with Mimi's magazine, Rachel offered to get Mimi's autographs for us! She went into Mariah's car so that she would be able to have Mimi sign and then come out to give it back to us!!!
After the show, I could see Mimi come into the lobby of the hotel, with her beloved Jack, and have conversation with someone for a while. Then, she walked toward the door of the building. A few steps before the door, she clearly corrected her posture to get ready for the paparazzi outside, and then walked down the runway to her car. You guys already know what she did outside: She posed for pictures with two of her fans and then for the paparazzi.
After she got in the car, we waited for Rachel emerged from the car. She handed us Mimi's autographs, so, I profusely thanked her while gave her a big hug, and asked her to say thank you to Mariah as well.
Task 2: BET 106 & Park: This time, I wasn't going to try and catch Mimi arrive at the CBS studios as other fans wanted to give me their e-mail addresses knowing that I'd film Mimi. So, by the time I arrived at the CBS, she was already in. There were some people waiting outside the doors. Then, one of the drivers that Id met earlier at TRL winked at me from his car, so, I started to chat with him. Hey, both of us were bored! Since he said Mimi wouldn't be out for another 1.5 hours or so, I left there once to get my nails done.
There was some more wait after I came back from a nail salon. But one of her drivers took Jack out for a short walk. And some fans were petting him. As Jack was brought back to Mimi's car, I could see that there was NOBODY except Jack in Mimi's car. Mimi eventually came out. But at the door, she was talking for a long time with a lady that I think is President of BET. And then, she finally came out and got in the limo. Right before that, she gave a hug to her fan who had come out to NY to see Mimi all the way from Canada despite her bad legs. So, I was able to get a very good shot of Mimi! PAPARAZZI REPORT - DAY 1 Mariah Hero's member "moonstar" went to a few TV shows to catch Mariah Carey on May 30 and May 31. Additionally, she filmed some scenes and posted those videos at Mariah Hero's VIP Room. If you're a member of this forum, go and check them out. This is moonstar's journey during day 1.
Task 1: The Today Show: I was supposed to get up at 4 am, shower, and walk out my door at 6am. But I overslept! I ended upleaving home around 7:45am! Luckily, I knew the first hour of the show would be all news. So, I hopped a cab outside my apartment and jetted to the Rockefeller Center.
There were so many people there screaming at Kattie and Matt (the two people who interviewed Mariah). But the whole area was fenced off, and I couldn't get close enough to hear what they were saying and stuff. Walking around the fences, I noticed two girls with butterfly wings on their back; I thought they’ve got to be Mimi fans! So, I stayed near them in case they scream for Mimi and Mimi comes to us or something.
After a while, Mimi's security guy came out of the NBC building, so, we were all like, "Bring Mariah out here!" He smiled at us and went back in the building. Shortly after that, people began to make a lot of noise! Mimi was out on the plaza! See, she's tall and tends to stand out in a crowd. But it's still pretty difficult to spot her if you are far away and she's surrounded by many guys. Then, she did the interview. During the interview, Mimi fans around me yelled Mariah! A few times, and she turned around and waved at us! Al, who does weather forecast, came to us and started a random chat. One of the Mimi fans said, "Al! Al! Bring Mariah over here!!!" So, I was thinking like, um... "That’s kind of rude to Al..." Anyway, she finished the interview and walked back to the building. On her way, some fans again screamed, Mariah! So, she waved at us again!
Task 2: Regis and Kelly: Mimi was scheduled to appear on the live show, Regis and Kelly, and I knew the only way she could make the show was by going there straight from the Today Show. So, I immediately jumped on a cab and went to the ABC studios trying to beat Mimi's car. Then, this idiotic cab driver did the unthinkable!!!!! He made a wrong turn a block away, which put me on the other side of the building! I ran around the block! But I saw a crowd walking away from a garage Mimi was supposed to pull in. And that meant Mimi had already arrived! I grabbed someone there and asked, "Is Mariah Carey already in??" They said, "Yeah, she just went in after waving at us." d**n IT!!!!! I missed her by... less than 30 seconds!!!!!
Anyhow, I decided to stay in front of the garage waiting for Mimi to come out. You know, the show runs for an hour, but celebrities usually come out as soon as their appearances are over, and I could not afford to miss this opportunity. I spent some time chatting with people there, both Mimi fans and fans of other celebrities. I met 3 people who were visiting from Texas for their friend's wedding and stopped by figuring they might as well do something NY. Anyway, Mimi got in her limo inside the garage, behind a shutter, and half way out the garage, she once opened the window and signed a few things for her fans. But I was standing on the other side of the car that I wasn't able to see her at all! But I wasn't about to give up yet! I ran to the other side of the car, a little bit ahead on her path and right next to someone with a HBF T-shirt, and got ready for filming. Her car eventually pulled out, and just when I thought I'd get a film of Mimi's car driving away, the car stopped, and Mimi rolled down her window! And the rest, you all know. WHERE'S THE BEEF?Each summer, New York radio station Hot 97 gives the hip-hop community something to talk about for the rest of the year. Something crazy always happens, whether it be a classic performance, like Puff Daddy bringing the whole Bad Boy crew in the late '90s, or a spark of beef, like when the Game delivered a faux beatdown to a man in a rat suit and called off a truce with 50 Cent last year.
This year, classic performances seemed more likely because Sunday's headliners at Giants Stadium - Mary J. Blige and Busta Rhymes - really have no rap beef to speak of. Neither do Jermaine Dupri, Dem Franchize Boyz, Sean Paul, Three 6 Mafia, Remy Ma, T.I., Ne-Yo, Chris Brown or Young Jeezy. The only ones who could have used the infamous Summer Jam screen (which artists use to put their rivals on blast) are the Diplomats, who make their disdain for Jay-Z very public.
Last year the Dips were given a very unceremonious second-performance slot during the show. That means that as people were still filing in - many with their hearts set on seeing Cam'ron, Juelz Santana, Jim Jones and crew - the group was finishing a brief performance. This year, Hot 97 tried to make amends by letting the Dips go on last.
Busta Rhymes' set came right before the Dips', and he got the crowd laughing when he entered the stage wearing Jeremy Shockey's New York Giants jersey with shoulder pads and a helmet. Bust did get love, but he probably would have been able to maintain frenzied feedback throughout his set if he would have stuck with his earlier catalog rather than newer Big Bang songs like "Get You Some" and "In the Ghetto". The MC told the audience that it may not know his new material but will learn it by the time he rocks the next Summer Jam.
But Jermaine Dupri got the award for the most stunting with guest appearances on Sunday. Not only did JD bring out his girlfriend, Janet Jackson, during his set with Dem Franchize Boyz (Janet kissed him on the lips before walking off and waving to the crowd), but he also invited Mariah Carey. For some reason, MC could not sing, but they played "We Belong Together", and the crowd sang along. Mariah mimed the words and waved the crowd as well.
T.I.'s show was basically an abbreviated version of the concert he gave at the Apollo a few days earlier, but when he was getting ready to give the fans his biggest hit, "What You Know About That", his mic was cut. Just like Young Jeezy earlier in the night as he was getting into "Go Crazy", Tip apparently ran out of his allotted time. The audience began to boo - not at Tip, but at Hot 97. The crowd had stood patiently through the rain and paid more than $100 per ticket, and T.I. had flown into Jersey that same morning after being in L.A. for the MTV Movie Awards on Saturday.
Jamie Foxx, who sang "Live in the Sky" with T.I., had his own surprise guest: LL Cool J. LL came out, and he and Foxx acknowledged that they used to have beef, but all is settled. "All I ever wanted to be was your hype man," Foxx told LL. Still, Summer Jam was missing that one monumental Summer Jam moment. With no Jay, no 50, no Nas, there was no one who really left the stage in shambles. (MTV News | eliseke81) |

BLOWN AWAY AT FRESH AIR FUND GALAThe Fresh Air Fund folks took seriously our ribbing at last year's gala about the aromatic situation outside Tavern on the Green in Central Park. This year, they attempted to remove the horse manure fragrance from the air with a leaf-blower. That didn’t work, and in fact, made things worse by adding clouds of dirt and dust to the stench. But mother nature saved the day with torrential thunderstorms that created a delightful river inside the press tent.
Correctly realizing that guests like Mariah Carey were not going to slosh their way through for the cameras, organizers moved the media folks to another tent that was dry and odor-free.
And that was most appreciated, since Mariah arrived well after 9 P.M., almost two hours after everybody else. In fact, members of the press arranged a pool, betting on what time Mariah Carey would show up. The winner got $28, and said that if it had been more money, she would have donated it to the Fresh Air Fund. Mariah is a big supporter of this cause, and she gamely got out of her car despite the downpour - accompanied by three umbrella holders, of course.
Movers and shakers that joined Mariah in helping to send inner city kids to the country included John Turturro, Marisa Tomei, Patricia Heaton, Kevin Bacon, Spike Lee, designer Donna Karan and Vogue’s Anna Wintour. (OAN Media) |

MARIAH CAREY HAS NO PROBLEM TALKING ABOUT THERAPY Mariah Carey knows she has overcome her mental problems because she is able to talk freely about her experiences in therapy. The singer was hospitalized in 2001 suffering from extreme exhaustion following a grueling touring and recording schedule.
But Carey is delighted her The Emancipation Of Mimi album, which set both awards ceremonies and the charts alight, has silenced those who questioned her sanity. She says, "People have been going to therapy since whatever, since the beginning of time. I think being able to say I've gone to therapy is something an enlightened person would say, not someone in denial." (Starpulse) |

MARIAH BATTLES RACISMSuperstar Mariah Carey battles against racism wherever she travels, because people forget she is mixed race. The singer was born to an Irish-American mother and an African-American father.
She says, "I'm in a room a lot of times with only white people, and they forget and say things that are offensive - and I have to put them in check. And I'm sitting there and I'm thinking I'm either going to have to leave or I'm going to have to talk about it. "After travelling the world, I think racism, or ignorance, is everywhere. It's in the US, Italy, France. Even in certain Latin American countries, where it's a very mixed society." (Contact Music) |

MARIAH ON MORSEL DIETMariah Carey is kicking off her new world tour The Adventures Of Mimi and showing off her new slim shape, which she claims is thanks to the "Morsel Diet". The newly svelte star worked out with a fitness trainer and did water aerobics in addition to her new diet plan.
She explains, "I kind of invented it. Basically you can have a tiny bit of everything you want. "When I'm really, really hungry I'll be like 'I need a morsel!' So they'll give just me whatever is there (on the plate), but it has to be less than a forkful." (Contact Music) |

ALL ABOUT MIMI At the start of the decade, Mariah Carey's star looked on the wane - bad record sales and rumours of a breakdown plagued the R&B diva. But, with her latest number-one album and a string of multi-million dollar deals, the queen of excess is ready to recelaim her throne.
"I haven't been out of the apartment for a few days," Mariah Carey tells me. She's pretty much just woken up. It's 8:30pm on a Friday night, and she's been nocturnal all week. I follow her on a tour of her home as she totters down the hall in a pair of black Agent Provocateur Hollywood Pom Pom mules. Carey says she always wears heels around the house because she walks on her tippy-toes. And, anyway, she says, "They're not high compared to a street shoe that I would wear, darling!"
Mariah Carey's house is at the top of a tower, a duplex penthouse in TriBeCa, an area of town that has just been named the most expensive in New York City. Her living room on the 5,000sq-ft 17th floor is warm and welcoming, with cushions and flowers - everything is taupe and beige and gold and cream. Marilyn Monroe's white piano, for which Carey paid over £350,000 in October 1999, is surrounded by dainty white ropes. A local soul radio station plays on hidden speakers.
Mariah, surrounded by a hundred plump cushions, kicks off her heels, and snuggles up on the Moroccan couch. She speaks in the low voice she's had all her life. "The other kids at school would say, 'Could you call and pretend to be my mom?' " she recalls. Her barest whisper fills a room in a very strange way, and when she laughs, she laughs a lot. She can, and does, break into flawless song mid-sentence.
This month sees the release of Say Somethin', the latest shiny slice of perfect popular R&B hewn from the rich seam that is Carey's latest album, The Emancipation of Mimi. Written with Pharrell Williams, Carey joins Snoop Dogg on a deceptively infectious musical trip that's guaranteed to be one of the anthems of the summer.
A quick biography. Mariah Carey was the woman who sold the most albums in the Nineties: her first came out in 1990, and her 1993 album, Music Box, has sold tens of millions of copies. In 1998, she divorced her star-making, music-producer husband, Tommy Mottola; they married in 1993 when she was 23 and he was 20 years her senior. In 2001, at the top of her game, she signed a reported £55 million, five-record deal with Virgin.
Her movie, Glitter, was released in September 2001, but had little success at the box office. At nearly the same time, she was hospitalised in Los Angeles, California. The press called it a nervous breakdown; Mariah described herself as suffering from exhaustion. In 2002, she left Virgin by mutual consent, but soon found a new home at Island Def Jam. Her comeback was slow: it began with a stellar rendition of the US national anthem at the Super Bowl in February 2002. In late 2002, her poppy album, Charmbracelet, was moderately successful. Then came the Grammy-grabbing The Emancipation of Mimi.
Mariah Carey has had the best-selling album in America of 2005. And even though she's spending lots of money to make money (she needs to buy property in Los Angeles because the hotel bills are ludicrous when she and her entourage head out west), she's now got enough cash in the bank to coast out her days.
But while she could buy a sunny little island somewhere and make an album whenever she feels like it, instead she has her new Elizabeth Arden perfume deal (she loves working on the perfume, and the perfumers say she has an excellent nose); a new deal with Gillette razors; a jewellery and accessories line; and deals with Pepsi and Motorola.
She is also working on a new film, called Tennessee. She has become the celebrity that puzzled and, rightly, troubled her when she was younger. Carey is working all the time - extending, as the marketers say, her brand. Why? Because the little girl who was so afraid of staying poor, whose grandparents disowned her mother for marrying a black man, who has hours and hours of beauty school under her belt and whose mother didn't own a house until Carey bought her one, will never be penniless again.
The princess in the tower might finally be happy - especially now, having just been triumphantly vindicated as an artist, but you wonder if she will ever find the security she still so craves. You hope so. Back downstairs at her thick, gilded front door, Carey is wide awake and ready to get to work. "Air kisses!" she commands by way of goodbye, her face beaming. Mariah Carey's new single, Say Somethin', is available now on Mercury Def Jam. (Marie Claire | Mariah Connection)

MARIAH IS NO FAN OF MADONNA'S THEATRICAL EXTRAVAGANZAMultiple Grammy Award-winner Mariah Carey has quashed claims her upcoming tour will be a theatrical action-packed show inspired by Madonna, insisting that presenting good songs will be the highlight of her gig, rather than publicity stunts.
The 'Honey' hitmaker sparked concern among fans after her musical director American Idol judge Randy Jackson revealed on a US talk show that they had been inspired by the Madonna's 2006 Confessions tour, in which the diva provided ample eye candy to fans by being an equestrian, a disco princess and a black-clad rocker, plus crucifying herself on a mirrored cross - all in less than two hours.
But Carey is adamant her show will be more focused on classic vocals than publicity stunts, and is spending hours deciding her set list. "It's about the music, the songs and connecting with the fans. Here's the thing, a lot of people just do their new stuff, and I can do that, but I'm the kind of person who hates to disappoint people, and there are just some people who won't be happy unless they hear a specific song," Contactmusic quoted her, as saying.
"So I'm trying to take certain songs that are, dare I say, classics, to new places. We're going way back, and it's not necessarily all number one hits," she added. (Yahoo! India News) |

THE MACHO MALE WHO RULES MARIAH'S LIFEIn the celebrity world there are some so pampered and privileged they can have whatever their heart desires. Mariah Carey's dog Jackson P Muttley is one such lucky celeb. Emerging from a New York hotel with the curvaceous diva, the Jack Russell made it clear he has a mind of his own. As his glamorous mistress attempted to go off in one direction, Jack tugged on his lead, seeminly inclined to go in quite another.

But then adoring Mariah is used to indulging her pet pooch's whims. Only the best will do for Jack, who flies first class. Economy isn't an option for her canine companion, the star insists, as he's not a "tiny". "He's a very masculine dog," says Mariah. "I'm not going to put him back with someone I don't know who might feed him or something…”
The four-legged friend, who shares her luxurious Big Apple penthouse, is so well-known Japanese fans have apparently set up a website in his honour and even send him presents. According to the singer one of the chief topics on the site is her pedigree pal's swimming antics.
"If I'm running a bath, all of a sudden I'll hear a splash and Jack will have jumped into the tub," reveals Mariah. "His favorite toy is a jet - like the ones you find in pools and hot-tubs. He continually dives under the water and tries to bite the water coming out of the jets." (Hello Magazine) |

CAREY REJECTS MADONNA "CABARET" IDEASMariah Carey has dismissed suggestions her upcoming tour will be a theatrical extravaganza inspired by Madonna, insisting her biggest priority is song choice. The hitmaker sparked concern among die-hard fans after her musical director - American Idol judge Randy Jackson - revealed on a US talk show they had been inspired by the Madonna's Confessions tour, which kicked off last month.
But Carey is adamant her show will be more focused on classic vocals than publicity stunts, and is spending hours deciding her set list. She tells MTV, "It's about the music, the songs and connecting with the fans. Here's the thing, a lot of people just do their new stuff, and I can do that, but I'm the kind of person who hates to disappoint people, and there are just some people who won't be happy unless they hear a specific song. FOR THE RECORDMariah Carey is proud of her legs — even if she won't admit whether she's insured them for $1 billion, as rumored, to protect her stake as Gillette's new celebrity spokesperson. The razor company honored the singer on Tuesday at New York's Radio City Music Hall for having "Celebrity Legs of a Goddess," unveiling a 16-foot replica of Carey's stems.
"It's a little overwhelming," Carey told MTV News. "I'm not saying that I have [legs of a goddess], Gillette said it." She attributes her leg appeal to genetics, dieting, and working out. Though she was a fast runner in school ("I beat everybody but a boy named Ricky in my sixth-grade class"), Carey said that she prefers to work out in the water. "Other than that, exercise is not my favorite. It is what it is." (MTV) |

GOSSIP: EX STILL HUNG UP ON MEMariah Carey may be dating someone, but she doesn't expect to hear wedding bells any time soon. "I don't know if I ever want to get married again," Carey told Page Six and "The Insider."
"My last experience [being married to Tommy Mottola] was so oppressive. You know, Tommy called the head of my record label on the day my [last] album came out to find out what it sold. He still can't leave it alone. Why can't he focus on his wife? I don't know if children are in the cards for me. It wouldn't be fair to a child to be born a celebrity. It would be very difficult."
As for her "Adventures of Mimi" tour that she'll start later this month, Carey said, "I hope Karl Lagerfeld can design the outfits. I met him through Andre [Leon Talley] and we have become good friends. He is very funny. And so smart. If he doesn't work with me on the tour, there is another project I want to work with him on." Tickets for Carey's concert go on sale today. (New York Post) |

MARIAH CAREY AIMS TO PLEASE ON SUMMER TOUR Mariah Carey's a little annoyed that she's going to travel by bus instead of plane on her upcoming tour — but not for the reasons you might expect.
The singer actually prefers ground transit: Air travel is too dehydrating, and sleep is easier on a bus than on a jet. So what's her problem? She's unhappy that she doesn't have time to decorate the vehicle "Chez Mimi."
"I wanted my bus to be pink, yet lavender," Carey said. "The rolling crib. But I'm going to design a bus eventually. I think all the girls are going to want it because it'll be like a girl's dream bus — the beauty area will be amazing. I can do one for the guys, too. I'm just good with the designing thing."
For now, Carey is happy just to design the content of the tour itself — titled The Adventures of Mimi: The Voice, the Hits, the Tour — since she and the musical director, "American Idol" judge Randy Jackson, are currently planning precisely how the show will go on. While Jackson said on Friday's "Larry King Live" that Madonna's show had inspired him, Carey insists the pair are batting around ideas that aren't as focused on making her stage show "over-the-top theatrical" as they are about "the music, the songs and connecting with the fans."
"Here's the thing," Carey explained. "A lot of people just do their new stuff, and I can do that, but I'm the kind of person who hates to disappoint people, and there are just some people who won't be happy unless they hear a specific song: 'If I don't hear "Fantasy," I'm going to be mad.' So I'm trying to take certain songs that are, dare I say, classics, to new places."
That means Carey's hits, such as "Dreamlover," for instance, will be given a sort of remix treatment, "with me singing on top of any beat the DJ wants," she said. Carey noted that the mixes will vary regionally, changing as the tour travels across the country (it begins on August 5 in Miami; see "Mariah Carey Plots Mimi's Touring Adventure"). It also means that a mixture of hits and deep album cuts could be featured in a "hot medley"; Mariah has mentioned "One Sweet Day," "My All," and "Close My Eyes" as possibilities.
"The concept is to make them newer," she said. "Some songs you don't need to touch, like 'Vision of Love,' we kind of keep that one basic. But we're going way back, and it's not necessarily all #1 hits."
Since Carey's focus is on giving the fans what they want, the singer went so far as to name her tour after a fan's suggestion, which was based on a diary-like book the fan had kept of Mimi's, well, adventures. "There was a letter I wrote to Oprah in it, thanking her for the Legends weekend, and there was a paper about me in it that this girl got an 'A' on," Carey recalled. "And all these little indicators said to me, 'This is the right name for the tour.' Things like that affect me.
"The title does kind of say it all," she continued. "It's like, OK, 'the Emancipation' meant one thing, that was kind of one experience, and now it's going to be a fun adventure for me — to go around the country on this tour bus, meet the fans, and kind of experience the world in a different way. I don't want to get too dramatic, [like] 'It's a journey through my life,' but it is. It's like a party-meets-a-journey-meets-a-show. And I'll probably get a lot of inspiration as a writer from that." (MTV)

MARIAH GETS MOBBED AT FUND-RAISER Mariah Carey did what she does best last week at the Boys & Girls Club of Newark's "Evening of the Stars" event. Queen Latifah and MTV's big honcho John Sykes were honored at the fund-raiser.
Miss Carey appeared unexpectedly to present Sykes with his award. He founded the VH-1 "Save the Music" program, which raises money for musically inclined city kids, to supplement government cutbacks. In typical Mariah style - pink satin mini, sky-high ankle-strap heels, a riot of diamonds sparkling against bared skin - she stayed the night, enjoying violinist Miri Ben-Ari.
Afterward, she allowed herself to be mobbed by young fans and posed and posed and signed and signed. More than anything else, Mariah Carey loves being loved by her adoring public. (New York Post)
