CASH FOR QUESTIONS

She is, of course, the diva's diva and, for the purposes of this exercise, you are her "little lambs." Until, that is, she comes to the enquiries about nose ops and how her ex-husband smells.

It's 10:30pm when Q finally gets the nod to enter Mariah Carey's bedroom. Suite 4600 of the Mandarin Oriental Hotel in New York is a $3000-a-night den of scented candles, hardwood furniture and floor-to-ceiling views of Manhattan. It's been a long evening - Carey has just sung her 1993 single Hero at an awards ceremony across town. But even with this daunting itinerary she is full of michievous vigor.

"Has one flown all the way from London to see me?" she enquires in a comedy accent of passable, Joan Collins-esque loucheness, before leaping onto the bed in her black form-hugging dress and heels. "Please don't make me get up. I'll answer everything if you let me lie down."

"Comedy Carey" is a new proposition. She was discovered by ex-Sony boss Tommy Mottola - whom she married in 1993 and divorced five years later - and her five-octave voice has helped herself 160 million albums and singles, and secured a reputation as the diva's diva en route.

Despite her return to the homegirl roots with 2005's career-reviving The Emancipation of Mimi, there are suspicions the diva still lurks within. Today, members of her entourage engage in a discussion over what side of her face can be photographed and whether she will "walk" if Tommy Mottola or her age (37) are mentioned.

In the event, she doesn't seem bothered by any of these as she rolls over on the bed and grabs a pillow for comfort. But if annoyed by a question, she will address the letter writer by name, as though she fully expects Q to fly back to Britain and hunt the impertinent reader down for an explanation.

"So," she enquired with a twinkle. "What have the little lambs been writing in about, then?"

We know about the big ballads. We know about "street" Mariah. But do you have a secret stash of rock albums that you love?
Mike Jennings, Battle

I can only think of No Doubt's Don't Speak as the closest thing to a rock record that I enjoyed belting out in the car or somewhere. I might pretend to play along with my [Fender] Hellow Kitty guitar if the mood takes me. Did I try to get Led Zeppelin reunion tickets? Well, I would have loved to. That would be something. But, no. When I'm in album mode I'm listening to hip hop beats. I don't have room for Stairway To Heaven.

You used to work in a hair salon. Could you still give me a short back and sides?
George Duffy, Ashby de la Zouch

Nice work, Goerge, but I only worked there for one day. I did go to beauty school in 11th grade but I dropped out. That gives you some idea of the standard of hair care you'd be getting. But a short back and sides is a military-style razor cut, right? I could give it a try, but I don't think I'd be bringing much to the table. Or your social life.

You wrote poetry as a kid. Was it any good? Give us a quick burst.
Matt Shriver, Basingstoke

I'm definitely not giving you a quick burst, Matt, but I will say that I suffered for my art as a poet. I had a little writing pad that i wrote my verses in and my teacher in third grade accused me of copying the poems from somewhere else. He was a horrible man. What was his name? I'm not outing him because he'll come after me and sue me and he ain't getting a dime of my money. Teachers are supposed to be an inspiration. This guy lowered my self-esteem from zero to below.

You live in a big apartment in New York. How much is your electricity bill?
Alicia, via email

I have no idea. That is terrible. I'm not there that much. I think it would be pretty normal. It's not like I'm running a fountain or funfair rides there. I try not to waste electricity and water. [Film director] Penny Marshall told me about these new light bulbs that last for 10 years and use a fraction of the energy. I ordered some. Ask me next year, Alicia, and I'll have that bill cut in half. [Q mentions the urban myth that the everlasting light bulb has been invested, but the secret is locked in a vault because it would ruin the light-bulb industry] I heard that once, too. I'm ready to use whatever influence I may have to get that light-bulb recipe out onto the open market. Aren't they a pain in the butt to change?

On The Emancipation of Mimi you were using all kinds of funky street slang, such as, "Them chickens is ash, I'm lotion." Can you give me some new street talk so I can be a step ahead?
Laetitia Knowles, via email

That line is about girls in a nightclub rivalry situation. Two girls want the guy and in an arrogant moment one is saying she has the better skin. It's not something I've said in real life. But I don't know if I have any current street talk for you, Laetitia. Don't you have your own cockney slang? [Adopts bad cockney accent] Awright, mate! Blimey!

Do you stay in touch with Ant and Dec?
Kirsten James, Truro

They are funny guys. I really like that youthful sense of humour. The wedding? [In December 2001 Carey was maid of honor at the spoof nuptials of Dec and Cat Deeley on Saturday morning kids' TV show SM:TV, alongside Frank Skinner, Denise Van Outen and Hear Say. The "marriage" lasted less than a minute] I was there for the whole marriage. You should have worked at it, guys!

Is it true that you had an operation on your nose to allow you to sing so high?
Emma Skinner, via email

No. It is completely untrue, Emma. I think you need to take care what internet pages you read. I must say I have never heard that one before. One of the reasons for my range is I have nodules on my vocal chords, and my mother says I've had them since I was a kid. That's why I have the high register as well as the breathy register and the belting register. I can do this [emits a sort of "Breeeeee" sound] and I can be husky. The only thing that really affects my voice is sleep. Sometimes if I'm exhausted I can hit the really high notes. Am I a moody cow without enough sleep? Is that an English thing? Calling someone a cow? Why are you down on your cows? They're pretty useful and easy-going animals from what I can see.

You've just launched a new perfume. If you were going to create a Tommy Mottola scent, what ingredients would you use?
Dara Yazdani, Hove

Dara, you come from a place called Hove? Does Jay-Z know about this? [Carey's Def Jam label boss Jay-Z is nicknamed J-Hova or Hove] We should make him the mayor of your town. Anyway, what kind of question is that? Dara, you're not being kind. I think it's fair to say that I am not going to be creating a fragrance for him at this point in my life. He has his own life, his own stuff. Hey, we love everybody and wish them all well.

The tabloids have called you a bit of a diva, though I'm sure they've suggested things. But what's the most diva-ish thing you've ever done?
Jason Bradbury, Mansfield

[With a cut-glass English accent] Jason, darling, what on earth makes you think that I am a diva? I am baffled, shocked and appalled. I've never done one diva-ish thing in my entire life, though I happen to be lying on a bed in high heels from the gentleman from Q magazine. The actual definition of a diva is a woman who sings well. The secondary definition is a woman who is difficult to deal with. I hope I am the first. I don't think I am the second. But these days everyone is a diva. "Oh, she's the diva of chocolate chip cookies. He's a real diva of garbage collection." If I'm a diva it's because I get the joke. I don't believe I am truly nasty and act in a bad way.

When was the last time you spoke to your Glitter co-star Max Beesley?
Paul Waggoner, Manchester

Random question! What are you driving at, young man? It was at an event with Naomi Campbell. Max came over to the after-party and it was all very nice. Why? Did you hear something different?

Is it true that you employ a technical person to work your TV, DVD and Blackberry
John Morato, Spain

No, John, and I'll have you know I was using SkyTel pager, which is like a Blackberry, before anyone else. Before a big show I have to do "vocal rest" where I'm not allowed to speak for maybe two days. It's soooo boring having to write notes, so I was texting before most people. That blilliant scientist guy [Stephen Hawking] - I need his voice machine for when I'm on vocal rest. I'd like a machine where I can just think and it comes out in a robot voice. Can you hook me up with that? But no, I don't employ someone to work my gadgets for me. Having said that, if you're a guy and you're in my house, then believe me, you're going to be on your knees fixing something or working out the plugs. That's your job.

What's the weirdest rumour you've heard about yourself?
J George, Ealing

One of the ones from Q! The one you just read about my nose, that's freaky. When I had $5 to live on I was still hitting the high notes. Think, people! How did I do that before this fantasy nose op? The truth is I'm quite boring. I'm just as likely to be sitting in front of the TV with a bag of chips, watching my favourite show that I TIVO'd [America's version of SkyPlus], as the next person.

If you were a complete unknown, do you think you could win X-Factor?
Jason Bradbury, Mansfield

You can win that show? How? To me it's all about escaping from aliens or something... [After several minutes confusion, she realises she's confused it with X-Files]. Oh, X-Factor. Well, I'd hope to give it a good shot. I mean, I am pretty flattered sometimes when young singers say they want to sing like me. That's nice. I think I'd do OK. Simon Cowell is a judge over there? Well, I'd be a battle, but I'd hope I could just edge it by being sweet to the other judges.

Have you ever been mobbed in a limo and thought, "I wish I could just get out of here, get on the subway and be regular"?
Clive Langley, Peterborough

You know, I honestly do think about this sometimes. Would I rather none of this had happened and I was just plain old Mariah? The answer has to be no. And that's because... I am not very good with directions. I could get one train, no problem. But if I had to change trains, then, God, you wouln't see me for weeks. I actually think that being in the public eye does start to erode your sense of direction. Mostly I get taken to the studio or the venue or wherever. I respond well to doors being opened. But if you left me to find my own way home on the subway, I'd curl up in a ball and call for help. The subway presents me with too many options.

You've said, "I don't even know what dating is." Isn't that a little sad?
Steve Reffine, Milan

Yes, Steve, it sucks. I guess it's sad. But I'm not the only one. My friend Melissa outside [Carey's friend is in the next room] says the same. "What is a date supposed to be like in the 21st century?" It's a bit old-fashioned, a bit formal. I mean, I don't need to know if the guy can afford to buy dinner, do I? With me it just moves from hanging out to boyfriend without too much formality. I like the sound of speed-dating, though. I like the idea of 14 mini-relationships each lasting three minutes and then you go home alone.

What's the worst piece of advice anybody's ever given you?
Iain Hayes, Burton upon Trent

"Hey, listen, I've got a good idea how you should do this." That's it. There are many examples they all begin with that line. In my job there are a lot of people who think they know best. Some do and some don't. I've really learned to listen to my own instinct, then if it goes wrong I am responsible. It took me a while to figure it out, but I'm a grown woman. I'm in charge.

RUMOR: JANET JACKSON JEALOUS OF MARIAH CAREY

In an interview with Hong Kong's Prestige magazine, the writer asked her what it's like to be J.D.'s girl and work with him professionally.

"Except this time around I see Usher and Mariah [Carey] coming out of the studio and I say, 'Okay, wait, aren't you supposed to be working on my stuff? We're supposed to be doing our stuff together.' And he goes, 'Well yeah,' and I'm like, 'Why are they here, don't I come before them when it's time for the album to be released?' But it's all good."

THE YEAR 2007 (PART 4)

October: Mariah spent time in Los Angeles, after she landed in the City of Angels on a private jet. Keeping things first class, she drove around in a Bentley, busily shopping in Beverly Hills, followed up with a trip to high-end restaurant Ago.

Mariah fans started queueing outside the main Broadway entrance of Macy's in New York City as early as 10:00am on October 18 - a day before the distribution of special passes to Mariah's debut fragrance launch.\

Mariah took the Big Apple by storm to launch her first ever fragrance on October 23. She was dressed in a stunning black Henry Leger dress, and surrounded by hundreds of people at Macy's Herald Square as fans clamored to get an autograph. In true diva fashion, she arrived in a Bentley Phantom. On Halloween, Bette Midler hosted her usual boo-bender in the Big Apple, with the proceeds from partiers like Donald Trump's "Pageant Place" princesses and Mariah Carey going toward her New York Restoration Project.

November: Mariah opened the show for the Glamour Women of the Year Awards 2007 at Lincoln Center in New York City. Actress Jennifer Garner was named the magazine's Woman of the Year after editors agreed she the person who best presents an example of a woman with a "successful career and happy family life while remaining stylish and elegant."

Many celebrities assembled at Jigga's Manhattan haven of cool to shoot Jay-Z's latest video for "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is ...)." Mariah, Nas, Zab Judah and Diddy were among those partying. "The 'Roc Boys' is the height of celebration," Jay said. "You can't celebrate by yourself, so I invited all these great people to be a part of the video," he added. "It just felt like a celebration. It was natural." "Roc Boys" was the second single off his latest album "American Gangster."

When Mariah unveiled her fragrance in New York City, there was a marching band and full parade. But not in suburban Glendale, California on November 20. For the Los Angeles launch, Mariah opted for the Glendale Galleria instead of choosing a more upscale venue.

The "scentsational" Mariah stopped by Ellen to talk turkey and perfume. "You smell a little like s'mores," Ellen DeGeneres said, welcoming the divine diva to her show. "I'm not really a fragrance girl. I don't really like scents," Mariah contended as she spritzed her host from head to toe with her new perfume, M by Mariah Carey. "But, the company was like, 'We want this to be a representation of you.' "

December: December finally saw the release of a new Mariah DVD. The press release reads: Mariah Carey, one of the most internationally renowned, mega-selling superstars, brings her most successful tour, The Adventures of Mimi, produced by Live Nation, to DVD. Fans will get an all-access pass to exclusive content and a chance to experience Mariah like they've never seen her before. Included in the DVD are behind-the-scenes footage, exclusive videos, a karaoke feature and powerhouse performances of Mariah's top smash hits from the past 17 years including, "We Belong Together," "Always Be My Baby," "It's Like That," "Vision of Love" and "Make It Happen." "I'm very excited to finally release The Adventures of Mimi on DVD, especially for those who didn't get to see the show live in person," said Mariah. "This particular show had some really special moments that my real fans will truly enjoy."

On December 6, Mariah showed her new dog. His name is "JJ" (Jack Jr) and he and Jack get along great. Later this month, Mariah took JJ to Aspen.

FROM RIHANNA TO JAY-Z, TOP SINGLES OF 2007

Here's an easy New Year's Day prediction: 2008 will be even more about the single than 2007 was. As album sales continue to dwindle, record companies will put even more emphasis on artists to craft that one big, must-have song to push through every project. Luckily, 2007 provided lots of great examples of how this could work. Here are some of the year's best.

10 - Bone Thugs N Harmony, featuring Mariah Carey and Bow Wow, "Lil L.O.V.E." (Full Surface/Interscope): Bone Thugs' double-time, tongue-twisting rhymes play nicely against Carey's silky, low-key singing on the refrain, creating a single as potent as "We Belong Together."

MARIAH PUP IS OFF TO PHWOAR

Mariah Carey must have thought it would be a real battle for her pooch out on the ski slopes - so she dressed the tiny pet in combat gear. The busty singer's mutt wore a khaki fur-lined hooded jacket, woolly jumper and hat.

Mariah wasn't quite so wrapped up as she kept her own matching jacket unzipped to show off her impressive slopes at posh Aspen, Colorado. Passing admirers could only agree - the All I Want For Christmas Is You singer sure knows a thing or two about cute puppies.

THE YEAR 2007 (PART 3)

July: As reported by Jasmine, Mariah went from Paris to Capri where she arrived at the Capodichino airport in Napoli (Naples). She then went on board of Roberto Cavalli's luxury yacht, Baglietto. The yacht is 40.8 meters long (133 feet) and has a car and a shopper on board. Mariah was invited in Capri by the Aprea family to celebrate the 60th anniversary of the jewelry store Chantecler.

August: Most of the fans enjoyed the ad for "M by Mariah Carey," but Mariah looked like she's never looked before. Carlos Benaim and Loc Dong, who are the perfumers said, "The inspiration for this fragrance was Mariah's magical presence and artistry. By combining two very contrasted notes, an exotic Tahitian Tiare flower with a deliciously warm marshmallow, we wanted to express Mariah's utmost femininity and undeniable sensuality in one strong statement. We then incorporated other facets, such as a Moroccan Incense Amber accord, to bring the element of mystery that lingers on skin. This harmonious balance of Mariah's favorite scents and memories is at the heart of this creation." Mariah's signature scent "opens with an indulgent, creamy accord and blooms into an opulent floral heart as a rich base reveals darker, sensual facets," according to the Elizabeth Arden Web site.

Mariah Carey rented Tommy Hilfiger's estate for the month of August for a little country R & R. Insiders said Tommy, who's spending the month in the Caribbean, got his full asking price - $350,000 - from Mariah for the high-season rental. The oceanfront contemporary on exclusive Further Lane includes five bedrooms, 5½ baths, a media room, an outdoor pavilion with a fireplace and an infinity-edge pool, and more than 150 feet of beachfront.

Mariah stripped down for Interview Magazine's September issue. In a subject rarely discussed with the press, Mariah opened up about her mega-million-dollar divorce from music mogul Tommy Mottola. She told the mag, "Something happened that prompted me to leave. If somebody does something to me that's too much, I have no problem cutting them completely out of my life." She added, "I am thankful to him in a lot of ways. I have to forgive him for being so restrictive. With Tommy, it felt like I had this controlling situation where I wasn't allowed to be myself." She also told Interview about her famous 2001 meltdown and her hospitalization for exhaustion. "I'm far from perfect. I'm still learning," she said. "I overworked myself, and I paid the price. I'm grateful to be alive."

September: September 2007 marked the 10th anniversary of Mariah's album Butterfly. The album was her first to be released following the ending of her marriage to Sony Music executive Tommy Mottola, and it includes contributions from producers such as The Trackmasters, Puff Daddy, Stevie J and Walter Afanasieff. In a 2006 interview with MTV Overdrive Carey referred to the album as "ahead of its time," and she said she considers "Babydoll," "Breakdown" and "The Roof" as "still some of my favourites." Rolling Stone described Butterfly as "a transitional album" for Mariah, who placed herself firmly in the "milieu of hip-hop-inflected R&B" and give it three stars, while the All Music Guide gave it four stars, stating that "it is one of her best albums, illustrating that Carey continues to improve and refine her music which makes her a rarity among her '90s peers."

Billboard magazine called it "a milestone record for one of the most successful and visible artist of the nineties," while Slant included it in the feature "Vital Pop 50 Essential Pop Albums" giving it four and a half stars. An entire episode was dedicated to Butterfly on VH1's Ultimate Albums series. The 2005 book "1001 Albums you must hear before you die" referred to Butterfly as "astonishing," "stunning," and "an album on which bitterness becomes beauty and glumness becomes gold."

Sean "Diddy" Combs hosted the return of what he called "The Real White Party" on the broad lawn of his white modernist house facing a sunset-friendly bay in East Hampton. The glitzy event attracted a number of famous guests, including Mariah Carey, Donna Karan, Lil' Kim, Brooke Shields, Tommy Lee and Russell Simmons, all of who adhered to the all-white dress code. The stars were treated painted geishas strolling around the grounds, Polynesian dancers, a jazz band and circus performers putting on a show with six spinning rings.

The U.S. Postal Service continued its tradition of drawing attention to important social causes by issuing the Jury Duty stamp at the Manhattan State Supreme Court. The ceremony highlighted the Juror Appreciation Day celebration, an annual event that salutes New York jurors. Mariah was one of the supporters, and also spook at the ceremony. The festivities were delayed for the arrival of Mariah, who teetered into the courthouse on five-inch heels half an hour after the unveiling was to start. At the ceremony, she said little. "It's very important to do your part in this wonderful country where we live," adding, "It's so early." (It was noon.)

The Save the Music Foundation honored Mariah, President Bill Clinton, Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton, and former VH1 president John Sykes, who launched the foundation in 1997, on September 20. "Music has always been my saving grace," Mariah said. "Like everyone growing up, my life wasn't easy. I don't always like to talk about it in great detail, but music saved my life literally. Writing songs and singing is so therapeutic for me." Before the ceremony, Mariah said she was very excited about her new album, which she said will be very "modern-sounding." She said she hadn't decided on a title yet for the follow-up to her multi-platinum comeback album "The Emancipation of Mimi." In her acceptance speech, Mariah said she was always thrilled when fans tell her that her song "Hero" saved their lives or that her hit "We Belong Together" helped saved a marriage. "I was often discouraged," she said. "Thank God, I never gave up."

Mariah won in court when a federal judge decided that a copyright-infringement case against her had no merit. Singer Rachele Chafir had sued Mariah in April 2006, claiming that the hit "It's Like That" was copied from her song "Sexy" and lifted key pieces, including the music, for the chorus.

Mariah's "M by Mariah Carey" commercial aired for the first time during The Tyra Banks Show on the Oxygen channel, but officially world-premiered during the broadcast of Celebrity Rap Superstar on MTV.[to be continued]

JASMINE`S JUICE

Merry Christmas readers!

It`s the most exciting week of the year so far. I love Christmas - I`m a big kid! I took Trevor Nelson to Winter Wonderland in Hyde Park to record THE LICK, joined hundreds of you at the South Bank to honour the UK grime soap Dubplate Drama and then went to Usher´s fragrance launch party to watch the R`n`B prince add yet another level to his world domination. Usher`s tagline was: "It´s not about being famous - it´s what you´re famous for." I loved that!

Last week, I watched the movie Elf with some people. I`d like to tell you they were kids. But no - we were all adults and we screamed and clapped all the way through it. (It´s also one of Mariah´s favourite movies - she got me into it!)

As you read this, I`m in Aspen - probably doing one of the following: eating my body mass in weight worth of pancakes, waffles, sweet potato or turkey; terrorising people and embarrassing Mariah on the slopes with my skiing, whilst she does stuntwoman-like snowboarding, which has to be seen to be believed; encouraging Mariah to get up to no good by messing with the paparazzi; playing with lots of kids and Santa; drinking champagne at Joan Boyce`s diamond store; or helping everyone in the house wrap their 20 million gifts coz they haven´t managed it yet. (I always wrap a week ahead, and if you´re reading this on Christmas Eve between midnight and 6 a.m., I can guarantee that`s what myself and MC are doing right now!)

But before I jumped on MC´s private jet, in London town I had lots of catch- ups with my family, friends and loved ones, which included dinner with Kanya King, and Christmas Prada cocktails and D&G cocktails both on Bond Street, next door to one another - and on the same night. I also went to watch the musical theatre show The Snowman at London`s Peacock Theatre, cooked all my girls Christmas dinner, attended the MTV party, and generally ran around like a headless chicken.

I also managed to get together with Craig David during a night out to dinner and clubbing, and we had a good old catch up. Craig waxed lyrical about his and Kano´s time in the studio together, jamming to old reggae classics; their duet at the MOBOs, where the combination of both of them onstage nearly drove the ladies in the audience into a hysterical frenzy; and his new buffer than buff body.

I wondered if we`d be seeing the new bod in all its glory in future videos. Craig laughed: "To be honest, the whole baring your top thing, like LL Cool J and Ja Rule, is not me. People aren`t going to see me like that, looking hench!"

Craig also made the MTV Base website crash after agreeing to be our Christmas cracker competition prize. Let me explain: At Base, we wanted to give our viewers an amazing chance to show their skills and get fame simultaneously, so we offered them a competition where the winner would get to interview Craig David. As if that wasn`t enough, the interview features in The Lick Christmas special, and runs all through December! Catch it if you can. Our winner Shereece Shaw was an absolute professional and star in the making!

I hope you are all enjoying the holiday break. I know Christmas is different for us all depending on what we are experiencing in our lives. But whatever your vibe is like this week, I wish you all the best. Whatever Santa fills your stocking with - I hope it`s all good. (Pity it can`t be Morris Chestnut filling my stocking.) See you in 2008!

MARIAH'S "HERO" FEATURED ON COCA-COLA COMMERCIAL

Mariah Carey's smash song "Hero" is featured on a new Coca Cola commercial. "Hero" is sung by Nisha Kataria. The commercial can also be seen online at youTube with a small snippet from the Hero cover: Click here to watch the video on youtube.

On related news, Nisha is managed by Michael Jackson's people and that they are currently talking with Mariah to make a short appearance in Nisha Kataria's video for "Hero."

THE YEAR 2007 (PART 2)

April: On April 17, Bone Thugs-N-Harmony released their album "Strength & Loyalty." Mariah is featured on the song "Lil L.O.V.E.." The song was produced by Jermaine Dupri and also features Bow Wow. "She promised that she was gonna do a song with us once, and she kept her promise," Krayzie Bone told MTV News. Mariah not only kept her word, but she brought along Bow Wow to sweeten her offering on the song "Lil L.O.V.E.." "I call it 'Little Little'," she told MTV Europe. "It's a favorite of mine. It's a nice song, and I think it really kind of gives you the back-in-the-day Bone vibe but also a very new take on who they are as artists."

LA resident Phillip Heier shelled out big bucks for a 16-foot replica of Mariah's lovely legs to call his own. The limbs were created for the Celebrity Legs of a Goddess contest, sponsored by Gillette Venus, with the proceeds benefitting underprivileged kids. Phillip, a memorabilia collector and a Mariah fan, found them on eBay in February and fell in love instantly. "I had to have them," Phillip, 33, said. "They're over-the-top fantastic." Phillip paid $555 for the legs, which weigh 300 pounds. "I was blown away by how beautiful they are," he said. The legs will only fit in Phillip's garage. "I'll enjoy seeing them first thing when I come home," he said.

May: Mariah Carey aimed to spoof herself and her life in a short film, Lovers & Haters. The Spike Lee directed flick is a spoof of the life of Mariah, with the "lovers and haters" that she encounters along the way, and how she overcomes those obstacles to still be one of the most talented and loved musical sensations in history. Lee also directed similar vignettes that became video features during Mariah's 2006 tour.

June: Mariah attended the Fresh Air Fund's Salute to American Heroes" in NYC, held at the exclusive Tavern on the Green. She also celebrated Kanye West's 30th birthday with a huge bash at the Louis Vuitton store in New York that brought out a bevy of big-time guests including Jay-Z and Diddy, as well as Common, Rihanna, Fall Out Boy, Ashlee Simpson, Travis Barker, Fabolous, Ashanti and Jermaine Dupri.

Celebs gathered in New York for the opening night of a moving new Muhammad Ali exhibition. Heidi Klum and Mariah Carey brought some glamour to the bash which combines well-known portraits with more intimate photos from his family's collection. The exhibition, called Muhammad Ali, My Father, My Friend, was curated by the boxer's daughter Maryam and his close family friend Gene Kilroy.

On June 18, Mariah unveiled her scent "M by Mariah Carey" to beauty editors at a lavish cocktail party in Soho, which she hosted with Elizabeth Arden, her fragrance licensee. The fragrance, created by Mariah along with perfumers Carlos Benaim and Loc Dong of International Flavors & Fragrances, opens with top notes of marshmallow and sea breeze accord, has a heart of Living Tahitian Tiare flower and gardenia petals, and a drydown of sheer amber, Moroccan incense and patchouli. "I was never a perfume wearer, because some scents would irritate my skin," said Mariah. "But this doesn't, and this is the first fragrance I've ever worn." Each of the ingredients represents something special for her, like places she's been, moments in her life, and childhood things.

The music video to Bone Thugs-N-Harmony's second single, "Lil L.O.V.E." featuring Mariah Carey, Bow Wow and Jermaine Dupri, premiered on the internet. This was Mariah's first music video since "Say Somethin' " in April 2006. The video which was shot in New York City by Chris Robinson, who last directed Mariah in the video for the smash hit "I Know What You Want" with Busta Rhymes.

With a microphone in one hand and an umbrella in the other, Mariah warmed up 5,000 fans at the first French Mighty Party, an exceptional concert given at Disneyland to help the Elton John Foundation's fight against AIDS. Joking about the unfavorable weather, Mariah said some witty remarks, and cheered on by the audience, most of whom participated in the "Pride Walk" that was scheduled earlier in the capital.

"Okay, it rains, but it's okay, I'm dropping the umbrella and what a pity for my hair," said Mariah, in a hooded mini-cardigan dress, before hitting the notes in "Heartbreaker." "Wow, I have to warm things up!" she said, putting her breasts back to their place, they were obviously too tight in the outfit. "Because I'm a diva, I gotta check what's going wrong," she joked again, watching herself in a diamond mirror a dancer gave her. "Well, it is a total and complete mess," she added. "Next time I'm gonna do 'Singing In The Rain' instead." [To Be Continued]

THE YEAR 2007 (PART 1)

This year, fans were expecting two new albums, a DVD, and a movie, but they only got the DVD. According to Universal Music CEO Doug Morris, Mariah would release two albums in 2007. One of them was the new studio album and the other one was either the soundtrack album of the movie Tennessee, or a live album of one of the concerts of the tour. Here is a recap of what did happen in 2007.

January: Oprah Winfrey's long-awaited school opened January 2, fulfilling a promise she made to former President Nelson Mandela six years ago and giving more than 150 girls a chance for a better future. "I wanted to give this opportunity to girls who had a light so bright that not even poverty could dim that light," Oprah said at a news conference. Many celebrities were invited, including Mariah. Each guest was asked to bring a personally inscribed book for the library, Mariah brought a bible. "My visit has been amazing. This is my first trip to South Africa and it's just been overwhelming. You know, everything Oprah does is next level. I mean, obviously she's very subtle when she's wants to be. She's just one of those anointed people who can change the world and we just don't have many of those people left. This is such a huge accomplishment, and I know it's something so close to her heart," Mariah said.

Governor Bill Richardson announced that the feature film Tennessee will be shot in New Mexico. Tennessee, starring James D'Arcy and Ethan Peck, will be shot in and around Albuquerque from January 22 through February 13, 2007. The production expects to hire over 50 local New Mexico crew members. Aaron Woodley is directing with Lee Daniels producing. "New Mexico is recognized in the industry as a legitimate top-caliber production location, a very attractive alternative to productions that might otherwise go to Canada or overseas to shoot," Governor Richardson said. "They recognize the level of local talent that exists here, our ultimate well-spring for this industry in the long term."

February: PerezHilton.com presented this first exclusive look of the March cover of Playboy magazine. The photograph was taken by duo Markus Klinko & Indrani, the pair who were also responsible for The Emancipation Of Mimi's cover art. Mariah bares a lot of skin, but you don't see her naked. In the interview, Mariah was openly about her 2001 breakdown, the Eminem dating drama, wardrobe malfunctions and how she actively avoids her own movie. "It was cool. She scheduled me for late at night, and we didn't get on the phone until 10 o'clock," interviewer Jason Buhrmester said. "She went up to her penthouse, shut the door and climbed into bed with a glass of warm milk and Frangelico. We talked for hours. It reminded me of being in high school and staying on the phone with a girl all night. I think the interview has a very intimate feel." The magazine hit the newsstands on February 9th.

Italian fashion house Pinko appointed Mariah as the new face of its London-inspire fashion brand. Mariah said: "I first discovered this spectacular fashion house while working in Italy. I immediately became a huge fan of the brand, and I bought almost everything in the store. So as you can imagine, when I was approached about doing the Pinko campaign I was beyond excited. The clothes are so stylish and fun, and I'm really looking forward to our new venture together." Pinko president and founder Pietro Negra said the company had searched for "not only a beautiful woman, but a musical artist, because music is the greatest channel of communication." Previous faces of Pinko include supermodels Elle Macpherson, Eva Herzigova and Naomi Campbell. On February 15, Mariah attended a cocktail party in the newly refurbished Pinko store in London. She also did a press conference and a photo call.

March: Mariah prompted tears on the set of her new movie Tennessee after performing a song she co-wrote with country legend Willie Nelson. Mariah, who plays an aspiring country singer in the film, unveiled the track Right To Dream last week - and the film's director Aaron Woodley admitted he was "moved" by the star's emotionally charged performance. He said, "People were weeping on the crew when she sang it. It's very moving, especially in the context of the film and her character." And Woodley added Nashville, Tennessee locals were star-struck after spying Carey filming in their hometown. He explained, "There I am, sitting on the edge of a boxcar with Mariah Carey, breezing through town. We slowed down to go over a bridge, and there were people sitting in cars. I think they did a double-take: 'I swear I just saw Mariah Carey on a boxcar.'"

Mariah sent a specially-recorded video message congratulating Jermaine Dupri on receiving the 2007 Quincy Jones Award for Outstanding Career Achievement at the 21st Soul Train Awards live from the Pasadena Civic Auditorium in Pasadena, California on March 17. She said, "Hi Jermaine. I'm sorry that I couldn't be there tonight at Soul Train Awards but I heard you're getting a very special award and I just had to make sure that I was at least represented on film because, well, we've shared a lot of things together - a lot of number one records together, a lot of success, a lot of big, big albums, big things together and now we're going to share something else. Tonight, we now share this. [laughs] We both have a lifetime achievement, actually it's called the Quincy Jones Award for Outstanding Career Achievement in the Field of Entertainment. I have it in Female, but obviously you're getting it in Male. So congratulations on this award 'cause I know that Quincy is your idol. I know that this really means a lot to you as it means the world to me. So I love you, and I appreciate you. You're the best in the world and nobody deserves this more than you."

CELEBS SHARE THEIR CRIMBO CLASSICS

Shakin' Stevens, Elton John and Mariah Carey are some of the finest exponents of the Christmas song - according to their fellow celebs. Slade's Merry Christmas Everybody is regarded by many as the greatest, although fans of Bing Crosby's White Christmas (or Blue Christmas, for those who prefer Elvis Presley rendition) may dispute this.

A few of the classics resurfaced in the pop charts, notably The Pogues, Fairytale of New York. And this year is the first where it has been possible for a song available only for download to enter the charts, meaning a host of other Christmas classics have made it back into the top 40.

But the oldies are certainly the goodies so here is a special mention to a couple of other gems. Johnny Mathis' When A Child Is Born is the perfect song to sip a lazy Christmas cognac too and lest we forget Frank Sinatra's Let It Snow! Let It Snow! Let It Snow!

"WHEN YOU BELIEVE" CHART COMMENTARY

Unusually for a talent show coronation song, "When You Believe" has been a hit once before. The song was originally written for the 1998 animated film "The Prince Of Egypt" and indeed picked up the Oscar for "Best Original Song" at the 1999 academy awards.

On its first release it was recorded by the superstar pairing of Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey, although it caused a shock at the time by peaking short of the Top 10 on the Billboard chart. In this country it was moderately more successful and indeed was Number 4 exactly nine years ago this week, and indeed makes its first chart appearance since, picking up enough downloads to register a place at Number 65.

Leon Jackson's new version is a slight rewrite, the song having been tweaked so it works as a solo rather than a duet and with a new verse inserted to put it in slightly better context as a song for a talent show winner.

MARIAH IN ASPEN

As the thermometer gets lower, and the nights get colder, what`s a diva to do in order to stay warm? Looks like Mariah Carey will be snuggling up with her new puppy, just in time for Christmas.

The pop diva was spotted outside of her parent`s jewelry store in Aspen, Colorado over the weekend. And she was showing off her new canine pal.

Reportedly, the “Always Be My Baby” singer spent a lengthy five hours inside the Joan Boyce store. And for Mariah, it was nothing but the best. She sipped cocktails and tried on all kinds of bling-bling during her half-day stay at the store. And as she left, Carey posed for the paps before slipping on the icy sidewalk. Thankfully, she had a bodyguard to catch her fall.

MARIAH HOLDS PARTY FOR UNDERPRIVILEGED KIDS

Every year at this time the Aspen Skiing Co. (Skico) wages an effort to convince customers there is no need to fear a condition best described as Preparation X. The Skico delays the majority of advance X Games work until after the holiday rush.

There may be confusion that the beginners' area called Panda Peak is affected by X Games work. A portion of the area was off limits to the public. Skico spokesman Jeff Hanle said a private company held a Christmas party at Bumps recently and rented part of Panda Peak for tubing. The tubing area was left intact because Mariah Carey was bringing in some underprivileged children from Denver for a party last Friday.

Skico officials felt it was worth using part of Panda Peak for a charitable cause. "It's not a big Hollywood party," Hanle said. The Winter X Games 12 will be held Jan. 24-27.

MADONNA AND MARIAH

Fred Bronson writes in the latest Billboard's Chart Beat:

If I had a nickel for every e-mail I've ever received from fans of Madonna and Mariah Carey, I'd be far too rich to be writing Chart Beat. But since your letters don't come with cash attached, I'm still here to comment on what happened to both artists this week concerning their runs on The Billboard Hot 100.

As this is the final chart week of calendar year 2007, it is painfully obvious that neither artist is going to chart this year. That breaks continuous runs for both women that began with their debut singles.

Madonna has appeared on the Hot 100 at least one week every year since she debuted in 1983 with "Holiday." Carey has done the same since first appearing in 1990 with "Vision of Love."

Of course, neither artist's career is in danger and both are scheduled to release new CDs in 2008 that will no doubt yield hit singles that will find their way to the Hot 100.

MARY J BLIGE DISSES RIHANNA, MARIAH CAREY, AND BEYONCE FOR NO REASON

Mary J Blige went on the record saying that 'Umbrella' was actually written for her but she passed on it because she doesn't want to chase what mainstream fans like, relates the star in a statement to The Associated Press.

She said in a sarcastic tone it may work for Mariah and Beyonce but not her. What happened to her wanting 'no more drama' ? She's not one to bite her tongue but this came out of left field.

Editor's Note: Mariah Carey does not receive songs from other songwriters as she writes all of her music.

MARIAH SET FOR TWO TOP 40 HITS?

Early sales figures suggest Mariah is set to have two Top 40 hits in this Sunday's Christmas chart. While All I Want For Christmas Is You is set for another week inside the UK Top 10, Mariah's 1998 duet with Whitney Houston, When You Believe, is heading for a re-entry into the Top 40 on downloads again.

A cover of the track, by X Factor winner Leon Jackson, is expected to be this year's Christmas No.1. On the strength of downloads alone Mariah's track has now spent two weeks in the UK Top 10. Mariah is in a excellent position to crack the Top 3 this week and maintain her position as this year's highest charting Christmas song.

But she's facing tough competition from acts including The Pogues, Leona Lewis and Eva Cassidy & Katie Melua. If you plan to download the track this year, for yourself or as a present for someone else, please buy it from one of the legal download sites. Let's show Britain that All I Want For Christmas Is You truly is Britain's favorite Christmas song.

FEEHILY TALKS ABOUT MARIAH IN ATTITUDE INTERVIEW

Westlife's Mark Feehily and his boyfriend Kevin McDaid talk quite a bit about Mariah Carey in the December issue of the UK magazine Attitude.

Did you swap numbers the first night?
Kevin: What secured it was our love for our divas. Mark has his diva, Mariah Carey and I have mine, Christina Aguilera. [laughing] He was the first person that understood how I felt.

Are you obsessed with Mariah, Mark?
Mark: I wouldn't say obsessed. As a young person I wanted her to be my big sister. I didn't have a sister and she was the epitome of beauty for me. She always looked so sad when she was singing and then you learn the story of how she's like the princess locked away in the mansion and... the voice? She seemed to totally understand gospel music, which I love so much. I saw her performing when I was about ten. She was performing live on some American TV show and my dad called me down "come here, Mark, look at this one, you'll like her" and I literally just stood and froze for a while at her performance of Without You. She is amazing.

What did it feel like to work with Mariah, Mark?
K: I would wet myself.
M: I imagined her to have this huge, imaginary, fabulous, lavish lifestyle. There was a time when I was in Thailand with Westlife. I'd always ask the porters when we were away who'd stayed at the hotel and I asked this guy and he said Mariah Carey and it seemed impossible to me. I had this silly illusion that she was so far removed from reality she couldn't possible have stayed in that hotel. Luckily by the time I got to meet her I'd come to terms a bit more with what celebrity was and what being a fan of somebody was because we had our own fans. The really annoying thing was that the first time I met her Westlife has just been nominated for an MTV award and we had a press conference day. I didn't even know that she was going to be there until I got there.
K: Tell him about the phone call. That must've been the maddest point...
M: ... I'll get to that in a minute. They put me in front of an entire press conference to meet her. And I'd waited ten years for this. For f**k's sake, they couldn't have made me look like more of a twat and she was in full bloom on a chaise longue.
K: With a fan, blowing her.
M: I just said "Hi, Mariah, it's really nice to meet you" and she said "I heard you're a big fan of mine." I'd got over meeting her when we worked with her.

Did you actually work in the studio with her?
M: Absolutely. It wasn't phoned in. We worked out the BVs together. She did the main vocal in New York but we did BVs and additional stuff together. It was in her house in Capri.

You did the famous video where Bryan McFadden's staring at her breasts for the entire song at the same time?
M: Yeah. The maddest thing was when I was sitting in my living room in my house in Galway - the same living room my dad had called me down to see her in all those years earlier - and my mum said "Mark! It's Mariah Carey on the phone!" F**k me. It was before we performed Hero with her in Manchester and she was calling to go through what we were going to do with the BVs. I was just thinking all the way through the conversation "f**king hell, I wish I was taking this phone call on my computer so I could record it." Mariah singing down the phone to me in my mum's living room. I put the phone down and didn't remember one f**king thing that she said. For me, things like that are the things that make this job the best one in the world.
K: Those things don't happen very often and no one can take them away because they're so special to you.
M: And I'll say this as well, we've worked with a lot of people who are not nearly as big as her who've been very difficult to get stuff out of.
K: She always asks after Mark.

Do you have any brothers and sisters?
M: I've two younger brothers. No sisters.
Apart from Mariah Carey?
M: She's my soul sista.

[talking about Stevie Wonder]
M: But it was great to meet him anyway. That's the stuff that I progressed to after finding Mariah Carey when I was ten. Vocally she has a side to her that people don't credit her with. She can really sing. I love big voices.

"ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU" IS NOT TO HEAR THAT SONG

Edison Media Research and Pinnacle Media Worldwide independently surveyed listeners to divine their most loved and loathed holiday songs. (Both companies asked review panels -- consisting primarily of women -- to rate hundreds of Christmas-themed tunes, sorting them into such categories as "love," "like," "dislike" and "hate.")

There's big money riding on these surveys, which were released last week. Knowing what listeners love and hate, Christmas-wise, is critical to 366 radio stations across the country that play nothing but Christmas music for a few weeks this time of year.

The most beloved songs in both surveys were often standards: Bing Crosby's "White Christmas" (he first recorded it in 1942); Nat King Cole's "The Christmas Song (Chestnuts Roasting on an Open Fire)" (1946) and Burl Ives's "A Holly Jolly Christmas" (1965) turned up at the top of each company's lists of favorites.

Three other staples, "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree" (Brenda Lee, recorded in 1958), "Jingle Bell Rock" (Bobby Helms, 1957) and John Lennon and Yoko Ono's "Happy Xmas (War Is Over)" from 1971, scored consistently well in research conducted by California-based Pinnacle.

Which leads to Christmas Music Observation No. 1: Despite all the new holiday music that is released each year, people prefer hearing the "classics." The newest song to crack the top 10 on Pinnacle's "adult contemporary" and "adult top 40" panels was Mariah Carey's "All I Want for Christmas Is You," released 13 years ago. The most recent for Edison was the Lennon/Ono tune.

Among the most-hated Christmas songs, according to Edison's research, are Streisand's "Jingle Bells?"; the Jackson 5's "Santa Claus Is Coming to Town"; Elmo & Patsy's "Grandma Got Run Over by a Reindeer"; and "O Holy Night," as butchered by the cartoon character Eric Cartman from Comedy Central's "South Park."

And the No. 1 most-hated Christmastime recording? That would be "Jingle Bells," as "performed" by the Singing Dogs. This 1955 Danish record (reedited and rereleased in 1970) is just what the name and group say it is: a bunch of dogs woofing out the familiar tune, one bark at a time.

"ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS IS YOU" IS TOP CONTEMPORARY HOLIDAY RINGTONE

Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" Is Nation's Best-Selling Contemporary Holiday Ringtone For Second Year Running

America's cell phones are ringing with the seasonal sounds of holiday ringtones from SONY BMG MUSIC ENTERTAINMENT's Commercial Music Group (CMG) with Mariah Carey's yuletide classic, "All I Want For Christmas Is You," leading the pack with sales of more than 1.2 million and a new RIAA platinum certification. Last year, when the track struck Gold status, Mariah's holiday gem became the very first seasonal Mastertone to be awarded an RIAA certification.

In 2006, the Top 5 Christmas songs from the CMG accounted for 49% of all Christmas Mastertone sales. Last year, Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" brought home an astounding 23% of all seasonal Mastertone sales and 56% of all holiday Ringback sales.

Originally released in 1994, Merry Christmas has gone on to become one of the top-selling holiday collections of all time, selling more than 11 million copies worldwide while earning 5x platinum certification from the RIAA.

MARIAH'S MERRY CHRISTMAS

Christmas is a magical time for everyone, but to Mariah fans, Christmas is the ultimate "Mariah Holiday." It's in this time of the year when Mariah's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" storms back to the top of radio stations' playlists and stays in heavy rotation due to popular demand.

It's hard to believe, but the now-classic song that was described by The New Yorker as "one of the few worthy modern additions to the holiday canon," has been covered by everyone from Shania Twain to The Cheetah Girls, was featured in a successful holiday movie ("Love Actually") and can be heard in various TV commercials around the world, is a 13-year old original Mariah creation.

With the introduction of digital media, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" continues to prove its "classic" status: In addition to selling over 600,000 digital downloads and topping Billboard's "Hot Digital Songs" chart, it is the first ever seasonal ringtone to be certified by the RIAA (Gold certification of 500,000 sales). This Christmas, the song will be released as Mariah's first ringle.

"All I Want For Christmas Is You" was the first single from Mariah's 1994 release "Merry Christmas." The album is now the best selling Christmas album of all time, having sold 5 million copies in the US alone and close to 12 million records worldwide.

In addition to "All I Want...," Mariah wrote two more original songs for the album: "Miss You Most (At Christmas Time)" and "Jesus Born On This Day." Mariah's three original songs joined memorable covers of "O Holy Night" and "Joy To The World" as the five singles released to radio from "Merry Christmas."

Since their release in 1994, many of the songs from "Merry Christmas" yielded new versions: "Joy To The World" was remixed by David Morales and a music video to its "Celebration Mix" was released. "All I Want For Christmas Is You" was remixed by Jermaine Dupri in 2000 and was included in Mariah's "Greatest Hits" album. Also in 2000, "O Holy Night" saw a fresh rendition accompanied with a brand new music video.

In 2005, an anniversary edition of "Merry Christmas" was released on Dual Disc (CD and DVD) featuring the Anniversary Mix of "Santa Claus Is Coming To Town." An innovative claymation video of the song as well as all seven of Mariah's Christmas music videos were made available for the first time on the DVD. This release also included the beautiful "God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen," sung in a-capella by Mariah, which was previously available only on international editions of the album.

Fans will agree that the best renditions of Mariah's Christmas songs are found in her many live performances of them over the years: "Joy To The World" at St. John the Divine and the 2000 version of "O Holy Night" being prime examples. Mariah's Japanese fans will also attest to that as Mariah has performed "All I Want For Christmas Is You" as an encore in every one of her Japanese tour dates. After all, "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is one of Mariah's biggest hits in Japan, selling over 2 million copies of the single there.

IS THE CHRISTMAS NO.1 DEAD?

It restores some faith in this nation's passion for pop that, although most people would be pushed to name more than three of 2007's chart-topping singles, the topic of the Christmas No 1 is still of interest. These days, however, the seasonal No 1 has become something to sabotage rather than strive for, largely due to the dominance of X Factor, which has provided the last two, for Shayne Ward and Leona Lewis. It looks likely to grab the hat trick in three weeks' time.

Because indie bands consider Simon Cowell the devil, it falls to them to set things straight. In the running this year are Arab Strap's Malcolm Middleton with We're All Going To Die and Lips Are Unhappy by the brilliant Lucky Soul, championed by the online music community Last.fm as an antidote to "mass-marketed karaoke nonsense released simply to line Simon Cowell's pockets."

Of course, the purchase of symbolic downloads as an act of revenge is even less about "the music" than the X Factor alternative. The more pertinent criticism of X Factor singles is this: they're not even Christmassy. The last great Christmas single was Mariah Carey's All I Want For Christmas Is You, already back in the Top 10 on downloads alone. That song is now 13 years old and from this year's other contenders - everyone from Shaun the Sheep to the Royal Scots Dragoon Guards - there are woefully few sleigh bells or children's choirs.

Could this be the problem? Christmas singles regarded as classics, from Carey's song to Roy Wood's I Wish It Could Be Christmas Everyday, combine festive sentiment with melodies strong enough to guarantee a No 1 in 51 other weeks of any given year. Perhaps the only reason X Factor has it sewn up is that no one makes decent Christmas songs any more. Chris Martin has 11 months to pull his finger out.

LAUGH AT ME

Mariah Carey has teamed up with director Spike Lee to create a video that makes fun of those who make fun of her. The video - called "Lovers and Haters," which will be on Carey's new concert DVD, "The Adventures of Mimi" - features actors saying unkind things Carey has overheard about herself. One young woman says, "I heard that ain't even her real voice. She keeps this great singer in the dungeon. She only gives her bread and water and takes her out when it's time to record."

MARIAH CAREY FANS HIJACK ECHO XMAS POLL

Devoted Mariah Carey fans have hijacked an Echo poll by encouraging followers across the globe to skew the vote. Two weeks ago the Echo's website launched an online poll asking the people of Lincolnshire what their favourite Christmas song was. All the classics are listed, from Bing Crosby's White Christmas to The Pogues' Fairytale of New York.

But one Echo reader decided to make Carey top of the pops. After voting for her hit All I Want for Christmas is You, the fan posted details of the survey on the star's official website. Fans from the US, South America, Australia and across Europe then logged on to the Echo's website to place their vote. Within 24 hours the previous poll leader Fairytale of New York had been knocked into second place.

As things stand now Carey has a whopping 54.3 per cent of the vote, with the Pogues in second place with just 15.3 per cent. Die-hard Pogues fan Michael Donaghy (35), of Winn Street, Lincoln, said he was disgusted. "What a joke," he said. "I'm going to get all my mates on the case - we'll soon get Shane back up there."

But Carey fan Liz Wood (32), of Nettleham Road, Lincoln, said the singer deserved to streak ahead. "This just shows how huge she is worldwide. She has an amazing voice and it's a great song - vote for her."

IDOL HANDS ON DECK

It seems the American Idol judges have been far from idle during the off-season. Randy Jackson told E! News’ Ryan Seacrest Wednesday that he is prepping the release of a new CD featuring a duet with Paula Abdul.

"It’s hot," Jackson said on Seacrest’s KIIS-FM radio show, while declining to provide many specifics about the collaboration. Other guests on the album, dubbed Randy Jackson’s Music Club: Vol. 1, on which Jackson will arrange and play instruments, include Richie Sambora, Mariah Carey and Joss Stone, Jackson said.

IN THE NO-GIRL'S-LAND BETWEEN MENORAH AND MARIAH

It isn't December until Mariah Carey puts on her bright red knit hat, zips up her white boots and kicks around in the fakest-looking snow ever with Santa Claus.

Is the scene familiar? It's from Mariah's music video for her 1994 holiday hit, "All I Want for Christmas Is You," the best Christmas song ever. Lots of people apparently share my love of this song: It was the 21st most-downloaded song on iTunes last weekend. Pretty impressive for a 13-year-old pop tune.

I first heard it while sitting in the basement of my Portland, Ore., home, watching MTV with my younger sister Heather. I was 12. It starts with dramatic piano music, tinged with the sound of festive bells. Mariah drags out each syllable for maximum theatrics. "I don't want a lot for Christmas/There is just one thing I need."

About 50 seconds in, the chorus peps up. The piano goes nuts; a gospel choir claps and harmonizes with Mariah. My little preteen heart couldn't soak in all the joy emanating from the television screen, so Heather and I danced. We jumped around the basement, twisting our hips and squealing with delight. We tried and failed to hit Mariah's glass-shattering last note. "All I want for Christmas is YOU!"

But that's not what happened the very first time I heard the song. I didn't like it. Rather, I didn't let myself like it. I'm a Jewish girl, and Jewish girls aren't supposed to listen to or enjoy Christmas music. I probably even changed the channel.

There aren't a whole lot of Jews in Portland. Enough so that I didn't feel like a total freak, but not enough so that kids wouldn't come up to me on the playground and ask why my people killed Jesus. I don't know what I resented more: being forced to sing Christmas carols for the school choir or singing the token Hanukkah songs. Even in elementary school, I could tell they were just putting those in the recital to be politically correct.

During the winter of '94, I was even more protective -- defensive, really -- of my faith. I was clocking serious hours at the synagogue in preparation for my bat mitzvah. Learning to read Hebrew and chant my Torah portion intensified my commitment to Judaism.

That same year, my mom suggested we put a string of blue and white lights on the roof. I threw a fit, saying we were not Christian and shouldn't do that. Nobody else in my family thought it was a big deal. We compromised and strung up white lights (I guess having colored bulbs upset me, among other things).

Even though I originally turned off the forbidden Mariah Carey song, it was winter break, and Heather and I were spending an extraordinary amount of time in front of MTV. We wound up watching the video for "All I Want for Christmas Is You" at least twice a day. Yes, Virginia, MTV used to play music videos.

Heather, then 10, didn't share my religious zealotry. She did, however, think it unspeakably nerdy to be a Mariah Carey fan (she and her friends called her "Mariah Scary"), so "All I Want for Christmas Is You" was taboo for her, too.

Still, after a few days of Mariah immersion, the song sucked us into its irresistible fairy tale world, where love trumps material possessions. A place where we plead, "Santa won't you bring me the one I really need?/Won't you please bring my baby to me?" We started getting excited to hear those slow, opening bars of piano and Mariah's elastic vocals, humming and tapping our hands on our laps with the beat. (The dancing started shortly thereafter.)

In the video, Mariah goes sledding, flirts with Santa and plays with a puppy under a Christmas tree in front of a roaring fire. "All I Want for Christmas Is You" is pure, distilled holiday music joy, like a shot of eggnog sipped under the mistletoe (or what I imagined that it was like -- I'd never tasted the stuff). Without knowing it, Ms. Scary had struck a blow for ecumenical harmony, helped heal a millennia-old rift in Judeo-Christian history. They should have blasted the song over the loudspeakers at the Middle East peace conference in Annapolis.

It is also one of the only new, original holiday songs to become a perennial hit (though in the Christmas music catalogue, 13 years is nothing: "Jingle Bells" was written in the 1850s). Most everything else is either an old song or a remake of one.

"All I Want for Christmas" holds up all year. I'll listen to it in March or August or whenever I need a little mood boost. Next May, I plan to play it at my wedding reception.

Today, Heather and I live 3,000 miles apart, but we exchange ecstatic text messages: "OMG, M.C. all i want 4 xmas is on!" Then I proceed to dance around my apartment, twist my hips and squeal with delight. Happy Hanukkah.

"M" MOST INTERETING CELEBRITY FRAGRANCE

Visit any department store and you'll find the rising number of celebrity fragrances eating away at display space. A signature scent, it seems, has become the ultimate vanity product for stars. Beyond keeping a name in the forefront, a namesake fragrance can generate a significant revenue stream that continues to flow long after the luminary's lustre has begun to fade.

Unfortunately, celeb scents veer toward the cliched and redundant, been-there-smelled-that shadows of better scents already on the market. Many of this year's launches are either too raw and grungy -- like men's scents KISS (after the face-painted rock group) and David Beckham's Intimately Beckham -- or overly saccharin, such as Usher She and L, a L.A.M.B. fragrance by Gwen Stefani.

Can Can Paris Hilton, the ubuiquitous heiress' newest offering, is downright cloying in its floral sugary sweetness. Like so many other women's fragrances by celebs, it's not much more than a good starter fragrance for a 12-year-old.

Among the crop of celeb scents introduced in 2007, M Mariah Carey may be the most interesting. The eau de parfum opens with the sweetness of the living Tahitian tiare flower and unfolds into a warm, nuanced scent with whispers of toasted marshmallows and incense.

G-NGLE BELLS

Hi Keith. With this week's 81% increase in sales for Josh Groban's Christmas album "Noel," I would like to point out that "Noel" is the first Christmas album to be No. 1 since Kenny G's "Miracles - The Holiday Album" did it in December of 1994.

Speaking of holiday albums, can you give me the best single week sales of three of the biggest Christmas albums of the SoundScan era, Kenny G's "Miracles - The Holiday Album," Celine Dion's "These Are Special Times," and Mariah Carey's "Merry Christmas"? Thanks, Sean Nguyen

Hi Sean. Indeed, "Noel" is the first Christmas album to top The Billboard 200 chart since Kenny G's "Miracles - The Holiday Album" did the trick for three weeks at the end of 1994. Kenny G would go on to release three more Christmas albums in 2000, 2002 and 2005.

"Noel's" 405,000 sales this past week not only represents Groban's best sales week ever, but it's also the best sales week for a Christmas album since Celine Dion's "These Are Special Times" powered through 461,000 in December 1998. Dion's album actually had one bigger week, when it sold 462,000 that same month.

Mariah Carey's "Merry Christmas" saw its best sales week during Christmas of 1994, when it sold 447,000. But that's nothing compared to what Kenny G's "Miracles" blew through over the Christmas holiday in 1994 - a whopping 819,000!

"ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS" TOP HOLIDAY SONG IN 19 COUNTRIES

Mariah's 13-year-old, classic Christmas tune "All I want for Christmas is you" continues to spread the yuletide spirit in the US and the world over, topping download and airplay charts simultaneously. This week, the song is the #1 holiday track in at least 19 countries including the US, UK, Australia, and Canada. "All I want" is also the #1 Christmas song in European countries such as France, Italy, Portugal, Switzerland, and Sweden.

In Austria, Denmark, Luxembourg, Finland, Greece, Ireland, Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, and Spain, the song also tops the holiday charts. Moreover, "All I want for Christmas is you" is #2 in Belgium and Germany. The song's parent album, the 1994 release "Merry Christmas" is doing fairly well, appearing in the top 20 most downloaded or bought Christmas albums in countries where "All I want for Christmas" tops.

On the week ending December 1, "All I want for Christmas is you" had more than 33 million audience impressions and 4,018 spins, according to Mediabase. In Yahoo! Music, the video to the song is the 11th most watched Holiday video. Expect more merry record-breaking and record-making from this track as the holiday season kicks off in high gear.

FIRST LOOK AT ZOHAN

JoBlo.com has your first online look at the unity of three comedic titans. Adam Sandler has been shooting a film he co-wrote with Robert Smigel (Triumph the Insult Comic Dog) and Judd Apatow, called You Don'T Mess With The Zohan (great title). Sandler plays a Mossad agent (Israel intelligence agency popularized in Munich) who fakes his own death so he can move to New York to become a hairstylist.

Oddly enough, Mariah Carey and her chest are co-starring in this one, along with Rob Schneider, but this could be one of those "you can do it!" cameos. I don't know how they come up with this stuff, but this might be Sandler's wackiest script yet!
