Dj TOOMP TALKS MARIAH CAREY

Hip-Hop super producer DJ Toomp has made a name for himself creating hard-hitting beats for the likes of T.I., Jay-Z and Kanye West. Now he's delving into some smoother sounds.

SOHH caught up with the Atlanta-based hit-maker at the Billboard R&B/Hip Hop Music Conference in Atlanta yesterday and got the exclusive insight into his work with R&B diva Mariah Carey.

"I really haven't heard none of the other songs on [Mariah's] album but the one I brought is pretty hot," Toomp told SOHH. "It's gonna be a club banger. It's a little different working with Mariah. She usually writes her own stuff and when she goes into the booth there's usually nobody else there but her engineer. But what's crazy is the results are great. She's gone this far working like that so why try to change that?"

Mariah Carey's upcoming untitled album is set for release in the first quarter of 2008.

RUMOR: MARIAH TO PLAY IN UK

Mariah Carey has promised fans she’ll perform in the UK the next time she heads out on tour.

The chart-topping songstress didn’t play in England when she was last on the road, but is such a fan of the country that she’ll make sure she schedules a UK gig on her next tour, reports the Daily Mirror. "We didn’t get to Europe on the last tour and I was upset about that," said Mariah, who was speaking at the LA launch of her new M fragrance.

"I love England so much! We’ll have to make it happen next time." Mariah, 37, said she’s currently working on some new music. "I am so happy with the new tracks - there are 22 that we are trying to decide from," she said. "But the way I like to look at it is the last album (The Emancipation Of Mimi) was the main course, and the new one is the dessert!"

MACY'S "M" LAUNCH: FAN EXPERIENCES

Meredith at Macy's Herald Square, NY, Oct. 23, 2007
"What an amazing experience my sister, Melanie, and I had in New York for the fragrance launch. Our flight from Denver touched down at LaGuardia at 6:10 that morning. It was straight to the Today Show once we stepped foot on the ground and got in the taxi. We hung out all day in New York anticipating our chance to be in the presence of the one and only, MC. We couldn't wait. After we received our autographs, it was straight to the airport, as our flight back home was leaving at 9:30 that night.

The time we spent at the autograph table was absolutely amazing. It was probably only 3-5 minutes that we interacted with her, but it seemed as if it was an eternity. It was the best time of my life! 5 weeks later, I still catch myself thinking "I met Mariah - like I had a conversation with Mariah." I get so happy just reminiscing about that once-in-a-lifetime event.

I just wanted to say thank you for posting pictures of my sister and I as we were showing Mariah our matching "M" tattoos. The pictures are so awesome - even though our faces are kinda crazy, the photos capture the real emotion of us crying and just being so happy to have been able to show Mariah our tribute to her and to have met her. Thank you for allowing us to have a keepsake of the day our dream came true!"

Cynthia at Macy's Glendale Galleria, CA, Nov. 20, 2007
"OMG I survived! So there were 200 reserved spots for Mariah's autograph. I was roughly #80 in line. I got there at 4pm and the event was supposed to start at 7pm. The set up was beautiful! The lighting, the deep color of purple everywhere, the decorations. I waited in line and met some real cool fans. Then the time came...I heard people screaming and getting excited. Then I saw her...Mariah!

The line started to move. They made us put all our belongings in a humongous Macy's bag and did not allow us to take cameras up. I had the cheesiest smile as I approached the table, and was left speechless, mezmerized by her smile. I told her "To Cynthia" then I asked her, "May I show you my tattoo inspired by you?" and she nodded and said, "Yes." Just then her bodyguard said, "No, absolutely no." But I turned around anyways and showed it to her. She said it was "very nice" and smiled. Then her bodyguard shook his head. And I said to both of them, "Don't worry guys it wasn't on my ass." She then laughed and said, "You're so funny" then I said "Thank you" for the autograph. I made her laugh...yay!

I was soooooo happy! I still can't believe I was right in front of her. It felt so unreal. We exchanged words and we shared a moment even if it was for like 30 seconds. This is by far the happiest time of my life that I can remember!"

SAME DIFFERENCE GET DUET BOOST

The X Factor winner will warble Mariah Carey and Whitney Houston's duet When You Believe - just as we predicted. We told how bosses picked the tune even though, realistically, only duo Same Difference, could sing it. But a show spokeswoman said the song's composer Stephen Schwatz has written a special version for each finalist.

JACK IS 3RD MOST FAMOUS DOG IN HOLLYWOOD

From In Touch, December 3rd issue, page 82, The Most Famous Dogs in Hollywood. These pampered pooches get as much attention as their celebrity owners! Mariah's dog Jack takes the #3 spot on The List.

10. Madison (Hayden Panettiere's)
9. Enzo (Vanessa Williams')
8. Matzo Ball (Adam Sandler's)
7. Flossie (Drew Barrymore's)
6. Sophie & Solomon (Oprah Winfrey's)
5. Norman (Jennifer Aniston's)
4. Mimi La Rue (Tori Spelling's)
3. Jack (Mariah Carey's)
2. Daisy (Jessica Simpson's)
1. Iggy (Ellen DeGeneres')

3. Jack has as many fans as Mariah: "He's built up his own fan base," says Mariah. "I laughed for about 10 minutes when I found his web site!"

Mariah Carey is one of the biggest stars in the world, so it makes sense that her loyal dog, Jack, would follow suit. Over the years, he's received his own fan-created web site, guest spots in Mariah's videos and two Live With Regis and Kelly Relly award nominations. "He's such a star," boasts Mariah, 38. Like his A-list mom, Jack is a diva and flies first class when traveling. "I'm not going to put him in the back with someone I don't know," Mariah explains. "He's my dog!"

MARIAH ON THE COVER OF SHOUT

Mariah is on the cover of the new edition of Shout, one of the UK's most popular teen mags. The piece is entitled "Return of the Diva" and inside there's a three page feature which talks about her look, her feuds with Eminem and Christina Aguilera, her diva demands and perfume.

Interestingly the piece also mentions the still unconfirmed album title Sweet Soul Odyssey, and repeats the inaccurate claim that the album is being released on December 3. This magazine is distributed extensively in Canada & New Zealand too!

SISTERHOOD OF POP DIVAS IS CHANGING

Female pop stars who attain the attributes of goddesses - emblematic names, signature fragrances, the floating hair of Botticelli’s "Venus " - tend to share a few qualities.

They are athletic vocalists, usually with multi-octave ranges, who can hold a note longer than most magicians can stay submerged in water. Their signature songs blend romantic axioms with the more current language of self-help. Their music is frequently dismissed as banal, yet often helps regular folk contemplate profundities, at weddings or funerals, or when a baby is born.

These traits link Whitney to Mariah to Shania to Celine to Faith to Beyoncé to Christina to Alicia, although each has her own strengths and quirks. But something subtler also connects them. Musically, they’re border jumpers. On the surface, they epitomize pop banality, but they regularly defy their home genres, blithely disregarding musical rules that hem in more admired (and usually male) pop practitioners. Whitney Houston set the template for this role by turning a country hit, Dolly Parton’s "I Will Always Love You," into a smash that redefined crossover R&B.

The mainstream’s pop goddesses also blur lines on the level of identity. Many are biracial. Celine Dion is bilingual. All pop stars are mandated to continually remodel themselves, but few do so as dramatically as Mariah Carey, who fled innocence (and Tommy Mottola) to become hip-hop’s super-sexy honey. Christina Aguilera’s been a teen sweetie, a sex radical and a retro vamp. Beyoncé, one suspects, hasn’t even begun to show us her thousand faces. Click here to read full story

MARIAH'S DIET SECRETS

Despite the US turkey feast of Thanksgiving taking place in American households all over the country tomorrow, Mariah Carey says she's going to have to watch what she eats. "My personal trainer is coming back to torture me the day after Thanksgiving," a smiling Mariah told Extra at the launch of her new perfume M.

"I wish I could say I have a great secret that lets you feel satisfied where you can eat a great meal which would let you lose weight, but there is none," the star confided. "I've done soup diets where maybe you have juice which has to be really diluted. I didn't do that one for long, but my trainer loves a soup moment."

But the star did have one unusual diet tip she wanted to share. "My trainer says if you're about to do a photo shoot or something important, then you shouldn't eat salads," she confided. "You retain water and it bloats you. You should eat grilled vegetables instead."

Although the DVD bears the Live Nation Artists/Artist's Nation imprint, Carey remains signed to Island Def Jam, on which she will release her new album sometime next spring.

MARIAH ON ELLE

The "scentsational" Mariah Carey stopped by Ellen Wednesday to talk turkey – and perfume. "You smell a little like s'mores," Ellen DeGeneres said, welcoming the divine diva to her show Wednesday. "I'm not really a fragrance girl. I don't really like scents," Carey contended as she spritzed her host from head to toe with her new perfume, M by Mariah Carey. "[But, the company] was like, 'We want this to be a representation of you.' "

The songstress worked closely with perfumers to arrive at both her signature scent as well as the pretty purple bottle which is topped by – you guessed it – a butterfly. "The marshmallow element you smelled before is the top note and was a subliminal thing – just to give you little campfire memories," she explained of her first-ever fragrance.

"My [signature scent] of course, is gin and Marlboros," countered a deadpan DeGeneres. "When you come home [with it on], they're like, 'You've been out. ... No, I have Ellen's perfume on!' "

Though she'll smell yummy, Carey's hectic schedule will keep her from having a true Thanksgiving this year. "I'm working," she told DeGeneres. "[Though] I really want to learn how to cook a turkey. It can't be that big of a deal, it just seems like one, to me."

MARIAH CALLS IN TO LA´S POWER 106

Mariah called in to LA's Power 106 today at 8:45am to promote her new fragrance, "M by Mariah Carey."

Power 106: We gotta check in with a friend of the neighborhood. Let's go ahead and make it happen right now. She does a nice cameo in the video for Roc-Boys, looking very sexy. Alright, friend of the neighborhood, ladies and gentlemen, M stands for Mariah.
Mariah Carey: Good mornin'!
P106: Good mornin' to you! How are you doing this morning love?
MC: I'm doing good, how are you? I missed you.
P106: I missed you too. You know, I'm loving how we're talking a lot now, and we're gonna start seeing each other a whole lot, so this is beautiful baby girl, and thank you for calling the neighborhood once again Mariah.
MC: I love calling up the neighborhood, I really do, because, I know I'm not from here, but I feel at home when I get on the phone with the neighborhood.
P106: As you should! And the next time you come to the neighborhood, we're gonna need you to give some money to renovate this place, as we got a mess in here.
MC: We need to do that, I'm good with the renovations and things like that. I like to do the interior design, you can come with the whole concept.
P106: I've seen your crib on MTV, so yeah - we want a bubble bath and everything.
MC: Well, you know we have to keep it... it can't be so frou-frou like mine.
P106: Yes it can!
MC: You know, like the men-area, I know you want it to be...
P106: Nah, I'm very much in touch with my feminine side. I'll put on my heels and get on my [...] and everything. And I'm gonna wear my "M by Mariah Carey" also and dare somebody to say something. Now, how's it coming along honey? How's everything been going as far as "M by Mariah Carey"?
MC: It's been doing really well, I'm so excited, because for a debut fragrance, like you know, they've been just telling me all these really incredible things about, considering that I've never put any type of... anything but music out before, so it's like very exciting when they'll come in and say "hey we're number one in Australia, we're doing, and we're doing that" and all these exciting things, but today, I believe we're gonna meet some folks. You probably know all the...
P106: You're gonna get bombarded. For all those out there, Mariah's gonna be all the way live at Macy's at Glendale Galleria, so if you're near the Glendale area, make sure to go out there, and I wanna advise everybody to get there early because the way it goes down: the first 200 people that purchase the special fragrance package - they get a chance to meet Mariah and receive her autograph.
MC: And the good packaging that they're talking about? it's the best one. How about I gotta buy it myself?
P106: I've seen the package here and I was like "this is unbelievable." Just the bottle alone, Mariah!
MC: Thank you.
P106: I was watching, it was so funny, last night your commercial came on, it was like "get it now, you get this nice hand bag" I was like "oooh", it was nice!
MC: I didn't even see it. I did not even see the commercial. Everybody else... I can't do anything but do my work, work on my record, and get ready to you know... see some folks or whatever.
P106: Well guys are gonna see the commercial and they're gonna run out and probably it for their girls. I think guys just gonna buy it just to have it also, you know what I'm saying? Because the scent, and Liz was explaining the scent... Also Mariah, where did you come as far as the explanation of the scent? They said something about marshmallows?
MC: Right, well, there's a lot of different things that go into making the fragrance so I was like "notes? what do you mean notes? like I just got back from the studio, what are you talking about?" They make a perfume out of ingredients that they refer to as notes. So basically you've got the top note which got a little toasted marshmallow type feeling and then there's the floral note - believe it or not, this is reality, it's called notes, that's how you know I was truly involved, I feel like a scientist right now. Basically, this flower that I had smelled when I went for the first time to Hawaii, I know a lot of people like to go to Hawaii a lot, but because I'm from the other [...] I don't really get much of a chance to. So the first time I went, and I smelled this one flower, you know when you get off the plane, they put the lei's on you and it's just very tropical, whatever. The flower is a Tahitian flower, called Tiare, it's beautiful - that's the mid note. And the low note is a Moroccan, very sensual incense, so it's really nice. It's really like a very very different kind of light smell, like you smell it but it doesn't overwhelm you, so it's good things, I'm happy.
P106: Let me ask you Mariah, just being a person that has so many great albums, so many number one hits and also just when it comes to Mariah, there is a brand-name, it's a franchise. My question to you though is when you just said this is your first thing going outside of music, what made you say you know, if I'm gonna do something, let me do a fragrance?
MC: Because you know what? I don't even like fragrances for the most part. People would always be like "what are you wearing?" and I'm like "I don't know, it's probably just like who knows what kind of conditioner or shampoo or whatever" but they always think I have on some fragrance or whatever and I was like "I'm not really that drawn to them" but sometimes they do overpower things, so I was like let me do this, and I'm gonna really be involved in it, I'll really go every single step of the way, like just the same way if I was making a record, which I am.
P106: Hello! Now, we're early 2008 with the new album, correct?
MC: Yes, yes, yes. I wish I could play you some snippets over the phone, like if I were allowed to do that... I'm so excited about the record.
P106: Let me ask you this Mariah, who tells you that you can't do that? Come on.
MC: Oh, the folks that don't like bootlegging.
P106: Okay, that's understood. What are you doing for thanksgiving? What kind of plans do you have?
MC: You know what, I don't really even know what's going on. Like this year, I'm just kinda like, taking one day at a time because basically I am at the very tale-end of making this record and I'm so excited about it. That's what I was saying, if I had a little snippet, I could play it but they're not mixed or mastered or anything yet, I'm still finishing up vocals but I just wrote a song the other night that I'm so excited about. The problem is, we have a lot of songs that we're overly attached to, when I say "we", I'm talking about my group of people that I work with, and especially Mr. L.A. Reid who we all love. Anyway, I'm just trying to figure out what the first single's gonna be.
P106: But you know Mariah, that's a good problem to have, that there's so many there, that you don't know exactly which one you wanna grab to release to us as the introduction and the new single. People are still listening to "The Emancipation of Mimi" because it was that good.
MC: Thank you so much, it was almost like, this is like part two of where I was at when I finished working on that particular project. I just feel like this is something that I'm really excited to put out there. I don't wanna go talking about it, bragging about it, whatever. I humbly.. and I'm very grateful for this album, I'm just gonna put it that way. I'm really excited for you to hear it, like just on a musical note, I'm curious as to your opinion and I hope you guys all like it.
P106: Well, when you come over to our house for our thanksgiving dinner on Thursday, would you bring it with you? Just bring it with you.
MC: You know I would love that, I wish I could do that. Maybe we could think in advance, like Easter, we could do an egg hunt or something.
P106: You know, we would do an M-hunt.
MC: Yes, and it will match because the lavender will go with the whole motif.
P106: "The whole motif," see that's why she's going to redecorate the whole damn studio over here. Being a Mariah fan, it is really crazy to hear that you've never put anything, 'cause you could Mariah, like you could put out a stiletto line, and people would go run and grab it, because Mariah Carey is always known to walk around in the greatest shoes.
MC: Did you tell me that another time? Because someone else has been talking to me, three people have mentioned to me about doing a shoe-line in the past like, I don't know, month, and I'm like "I do love me some shoes!"
P106: And you wear them well. We missed the boat on the jeans-line. Remember when you cut the waist on the jeans and everybody's aunt started wearing jeans like that. "M by Mariah" - I know that it's gonna be a great situation as far as today, I know as far as the holidays, and it's crazy because, when it comes to just Mariah and the scent, if you just look at the bottle, like I haven't even had the chance to smell it, I'm just looking at the bottle and you wanna get that either for your girl if you're a fella, now I know the girls are gonna go out and get it, and I know when it comes down to Macy's at the Glendale Galleria, I know you're gonna shut it down.
MC: I'm excited, but did you know that all fragrances smell different on all women and all people in general? So we have to smell it on as many, you know, members of the opposite sex as you can, to see who you like the scent best on.
P106: Well you know, I can't do that. Come on Mariah.
MC: I mean I'm just saying to the men out there who are not...
P106: Mariah, you have to stop flirting with me!
MC: I'm not doing that!
P106: 'Cause what we had yesterday, what we had, that was yesterday. I love you, there's never any ill will, but Mariah, you gotta stop this!
MC: [laughs] No, I would never do that.
P106: You'd never stop? Now she's saying she'll never stop.
MC: I'm your number one fan, I'm in the fan-club, that's what it is.
P106: Thank you so much, that'll be audio now and we'll cut up and replay it. Mariah, we definitely thank you baby girl, and don't forget - for all those out there in the Glendale area or the surrounding areas, Macy's at Glendale Galleria, go on out there today, say hello to Mariah, now the signing begins at 7:00pm, the first 200 people, which I'm pretty sure there are 200 people out there right now ladies and gentlemen, you wanna get out there early. Mariah, we definitely thank you once again for calling up the neighborhood.
MC: I thank you, and thank you for knowing so much about the fragrance and just being so supportive 'cause it's been really really nice, I'm just excited, like you said - for the holidays, it is something really really special and I hope people enjoy it because I'm too much behind them other folks that put their fragrances out in September, we just weren't ready but we wanted it to be right.
P106: And it is right, and we thank you for that phone call Mariah.
MC: I love you and I thank you so much and I can not wait to see you.

MARIAH IS BACK ON FIRE

Her last album was 2005's biggest-selling - but Mariah Carey tells us Emancipation Of Mimi was just a warm-up for her new effort. Speaking at the launch of her new M fragrance in LA, she revealed: "I am so happy with the new tracks - there are 22 that we're trying to decide from. But the way I like to look at it is the last album was the main course, and the new one is the dessert!"

Mariah added she's set to embark on a worldwide tour. She said: "We didn't get to Europe on the last tour and I was upset about that. I love England so much! We'll have to make it happen next time." In the meantime, fans can watch Mimi on the new DVD of last year's Adventures Of Mimi tour. It's a treat.

Boyz II Men make a guest appearance on the duet "One Sweet Day". Carey said in a statement she was "very excited" to finally release the DVD, through an exclusive deal with Best Buy, since "this particular show had some really special moments that my real fans will truly enjoy."

Strangely enough, Carey's "Glitter" didn't make Spin magazine's list of the worst movies made by musicians, although that might have been because the competition was so stiff. In the mag's December issue, the Beatles vie against KISS, Paul Simon, Neil Young, Prince, Perry Farrell, Bob Dylan and Daft Punk for top honors. The Fab Four's "Magical Mystery Tour" is described as "mercifully short", Farrell's "Gift" is "cringe-inducing" and Daft Punk's "Electroma" may disappoint anyone "who came of age after 1916" since "this movie is not a 'talkie'."

MARIAH CALLS LA KISS FM

Mariah called in to LA's KIIS FM today at 9:35am to promote her new fragrance, "M by Mariah Carey." Click on the play button below to listen to Mariah's phone interview with Ryan Seacrest.

Ryan Seacrest: Who needs some MC this morning... Mariah Carey!
Mariah Carey: Hey!
RS: Oh, there it is! There is that voice we long for!
MC: Hi darling, how are you?
RS: It's as if you're inside the headset, it's so smooth.
MC: You are out of control, how are you this morning?
RS: I'm okay now, four o'clock I was angry but now, 9:35, I'm buzzing with happiness.
MC: You were angry because you had to wake up at four or because...?
RS: Yep.
MC: You know what? I'm with you.
RS: I mean, not angry, that's not correct, it's just one of those things - as the day goes on, I get more and more of that happy feeling. I think you and I live.. we're on opposite schedules completely.
MC: We are and yet they're actually almost the same because I do like not usually go to sleep before four.
RS: What's with you music people? I mean all of the best and biggest names, you guys shine in the middle of the night.
MC: [laughs] That's what it is, stars shine at night! No, I don't know. I have no idea what is the creativity thing for me, it's been like - my whole life, I've always been, you know, writing and whatever and so as a kid I just would be up late, just writing poems or lyrics or whatever and it just stayed with me. It's a great thing that I'm very thankful for, you know, the ability to write songs, but like being a nocturnal person is a little bit annoying.
RS: You know, Mariah Carey - all of this this morning, as if she hasn't had enough success in everything that she's done, there's more to the mogulship. And before we talk about how people can see you tonight, I'm wondering, when you look at young artists, some of the new artists, you've done as good as anybody in music can do. You're in a completely different league because of what you've been able to accomplish. What do you think when you look at some of these younger female stars?
MC: I don't know... I mean like, some people you might think they're young but they're probably older, they just started later. Don't forget I was in high school working on my first demo! And so I think I have a different perspective. Honestly, when I look at like certain people that did start really young, I kinda feel like I can relate maybe a little bit to what they're going through because it's a tough business. I don't know, I think everybody has their own journey that they have to go through and sometimes it's a great moment and everything is amazing and sometimes it's not, and that's just the way it is in life. So I think like with other artists who are just starting out and they've been doing this for you know, however long, it's all about you and whatever you're going through, like this new kind of different phase in my life which is really exciting, having the new fragrance, you know. This is like my first kind of, you know, non-musical entrée into the world of...
RS: It's your first liquidventure.
MC: Yes it is! [laughs]
RS: I would like for you to use that pitch. "This is my first liquidventure".
MC: Can I take... I mean, do I credit you for it?
RS: No, I don't need credit. You conquered everything else, let's go liquid.
MC: Let's go liquid! Liquid is hot, liquid hot magma [Austin Powers quote]. Well, I got that from Mike Myers, I can't...
RS: You did come up with "M by Mariah Carey". That is your brand, M!
MC: I know, that is the height of creativity, but actually what it was, was that we were more focused on the actual fragrance and didn't even, I mean I was thinking about names all along, I was thinking it would probably be like one of the names from one of the songs off the new record that I'm working on right now, but actually it didn't end up that way, believe it or not - so many people just trademark all these names, 'cause if it's a good name, likelihood is that it's taken already.
RS: That's true I guess, but no one took the consonant M, so that's all yours, you can have that.
MC: That's all mine, and funny thing is everybody calls me 'M', like you know, my friends call me M or MC or whatever, so there you go.
RS: Mariah's gonna be at M-Macy's at the Glendale Galleria, tonight at 7 o'clock. The first 200 people that purchase a special fragrance package get to actually meet and receive an autograph from Mariah Carey, so there will be a lot of people out there tonight, that's the Glendale Galleria, I'm gonna put the information at KIISFM.com. Why do a fragrance?
MC: I loved this process. Making this fragrance has been something that's been so cool and different for me because like O.K., they actually equate the ingredients, the same terminology we use like 'I'm gonna go in the studio, I'm gonna work on something, I'm gonna change this note, and that note, whatever' 'cause we wanted to feel, let's say the outro of one of my famous songs... I don't know, "We Belong Together" - at the end, I go up to the higher note, and literally that's the same thing with the fragrance. It's like, we want the top note to stand out more, you know in certain parts, like the floral note would be more dominant. And also, the low sensual Moroccan incense - that's the bottom note, and I learned about all this and I really really worked on the fragrance with the people at Elizabeth Arden, so it's been a cool learning experience for me too. Like I would definitely recommend it to anybody out there who doesn't know what they want to do with their life or with their career necessarily, it's a pretty cool job to have. Can you believe that there are actually people who - all they do is, you spray perfume on them and smell it on their skin?
RS: That's... your payroll. You've got people around you doing that all the time.
MC: Not my payroll, but that is an actual job, can you believe that?
RS: I can. I was just thinking though Mariah, as I listen to the way you describe the fragrance, music, and the comparison you made, music is audio-chemistry then, isn't it?
MC: It really is, and it's pretty cool because honestly, I was not good at Chemistry or anything science - I would hate it or anything like mathematics, so now I feel like "ha-ha", you know? I learned something guys! No, I really do feel like this was and is a great learning experience for me and every day I learn a little bit more about the process and what goes into it and I have so much respect for the people that actually go out and you know, they'll find, you know, I wanted this specific flower, this Tahitian flower, I didn't know the name of it, and I just kinda described it and the folks from Arden went out and literally got the extract of this flower called the Tiare Flower, and it's found, it's a Tahitian flower, it's beautiful.
RS: It's from a Tiare Tequila plant.
MC: [laughs] Probably, in something... let's say it's an intoxicating moment, but it doesn't smell like tequila.
RS: Mariah Carey is with us, 9:42 on Wednesday-- Tuesday, it's one big 24 hours.
MC: Of course it is.
RS: What about new music? I know it was scheduled to come out either, well, today, wasn't it?
MC: Today? I don't know... scheduled for today? They're gonna have to come grab my iPod 'cause...
RS: When will we have the new Mariah Carey?
MC: We will have my new work... [Speaks to someone else:] we're not talking about that darling, we're talking about music now! People come in and point at things going "tonight only I'll be at Macy's Glendale..." Actually, I'm gonna be putting out the record at the top of the year. I'm really really excited about it, I don't even wanna go on a tangent because I won't stop. [laughs] No, it's like, I'm so excited about this music, and the interesting thing is like you said, the notes like with the perfume and the fragrance and the creation of that is like, something that's different for me creatively, it took me to a new place just in terms of my music, in terms of where I was going and you know - what you're doing while you're writing and recording, it's really important you know.
RS: When I listen to Mariah Carey, I always feel like as she speaks with this chaos and the soft voice, that there are people fanning, there's mani-padi, all happening at the same time.
MC: What do you think is going on? Fanning?
RS: Fanning and grape-feeding... [Studio girl: he thinks you're being pampered as you speak]
MC: I think you would hear me eating grapes.
RS: Well you have that... you do, your voice...!
MC: I sound like I'm eating grapes?
RS: No, no... the picture in my head, in my mind, is that, you're constantly, you're so relaxed that I wish I could be as pampered as you.
MC: I actually am having my nails done as we speak.
RS: See?
MC: Ryan, either you have that special camera set up that we discussed.
RS: It was for the late nights. I have this certain unbelievable way of recognizing vanity.
MC: Oh my goodness, it's not vanity, it's just part of the job and you know it.
RS: I call it maintenance. It's maintenance. Alright, so your fragrance is "M by Mariah Carey".
MC: "M by Mariah Carey", it's a beautiful, like purple, deep-purple bottle with surprisingly a butterfly on top, but I do love it.
RS: Shocking! Tonight at the Glendale Galleria, you can meet her. We were talking about this yesterday, if I had a fragrance, it would be called "insecurity".
MC: What?
RS: "Insecurity. RS."
MC: Listen, it should be called "Fabulousness" and you should put it out next year.
RS: That would help with the gay rumors. Mariah, we love you, thanks for calling!
MC: I love you too darling, talk to you Ryan! Okay, 7:00pm Macy's Bye!
RS: MC, KIIS FM. [Plays "We Belong Together"]

NEW "M" CAMPAIGN NEWS: VIRTUAL FORD MODEL SEARCH

In a first for any virtual world, MTV Networks, Elizabeth Arden and Ford Models today announced they are launching a campaign to find the world’s first-ever virtual supermodel. The three iconic brands are teaming up to create M by Mariah Carey’s "Virtual Ford Model Search" to find the new face of MTV’s Virtual Hills.

The campaign is designed to appeal to a generation of young, aspiring consumers who take their online persona as seriously as their real-world presence. Taking branded entertainment to new heights, the campaign offers innovative in-world experiences that build strong connections to the M by Mariah Carey fragrance and to Ford Models.

Beginning Monday, viewers can go to http://www.vmodelsearch.mtv.com to create their own customized avatar, which they’ll use on their quest to become the world’s first-ever virtual model. Participants will experience opportunities to "meet" in-world with a roster of Ford Models’ experts who will provide invaluable beauty and styling tips on everything from fashion, skincare, hair, and makeup -- of which all can apply to the real world. Viewers are then given a virtual bottle of M by Mariah Carey -- complete with a spray animation -- along with a Ford Models portfolio book to carry throughout the virtual world. Ford Models’ digital video content containing similar fashion and beauty insights will also be available 24 hours a day for viewing. The campaign was designed in conjunction with MTV’s Integrated Marketing Group and Elizabeth Arden’s media communications agency, PHD.

"Our viewers are accustomed to expressing personal style in all facets of their lives, and that extends to their virtual world personas as well," said Courtney Holt, Executive Vice President of Digital Music and Media for MTV Networks’ Music & Logo Group. "With Elizabeth Arden and Ford Models, we’re tapping into their twin drivers of fashion and beauty and creating a social campaign where they can seek status and project a confident sense of self with others." "Bringing Ford Models to MTV’s virtual world is a fun way for us to discover great talent," said Mitch Grossbach, General Manager of Ford Models Media. "Who knows, we may just find our next Supermodel."

The multi-faceted campaign engages Hills viewers across all MTV screens, from on-air to online and in the virtual world. To drive awareness for the campaign, MTV will air :30-second Elizabeth Arden/MTV co-branded spots during several episodes of The Hills beginning Monday, Nov. 19th, pointing viewers to co-branded microsites. The microsites, which will appear on MTV.com and inside Virtual Hills, will offer viewers directions on how to enter the campaign, profiles on the semifinalists and blog entries from contestants. The sites will also contain links for users to purchase M by Mariah Carey as well as links to Ford Models’ Web site.

"The opportunity to partner our M by Mariah Carey fragrance with such world-class brands as Ford Models, MTV and our media agency, PHD, offers a unique chance for us to connect with our target audience on a completely new level," said Ron Rolleston, Executive Vice President of Elizabeth Arden fragrances. "Our consumers are young, fresh and creative, and this campaign offers a more personal way to connect and engage with them in a truly interactive fashion."

"By partnering with MTV and Ford Models, the M by Mariah Carey brand will reach fans everywhere they are through a unique and cutting-edge multiplatform campaign tied to the Hills and built around Mariah’s debut fragrance," said Tanya Zvonkin, Vice President/Group Director for PHD. "For the fragrance M by Mariah Carey, there needed to be innovative programming that would build excitement and connection to the brand. This campaign extends beyond the borders of MTV’s Virtual Hills to include on-air promos and engaging online content."

"MTV and Ford Models have a proven track-record of creating and supporting stars, so the idea of using this new media platform to create a virtual brand ambassador with a partner like Elizabeth Arden seems like its time has come," said Tim Rosta, Senior Vice President of Integrated Marketing for MTV. "The virtual model search will connect our shared audience to MTV’s virtual worlds and build a rich community around beauty, fashion style and youth culture."

At the heart of the campaign is a series of events in early January, in which models will be asked to show off their virtual acting capabilities by posing with the bottle and acting out a commercial for the fragrance. They will also be asked to walk a virtual runway and compete in a virtual dance contest. Representatives from Ford Models, Elizabeth Arden and MTV will conduct the judging.

Three finalists will be chosen by an expert panel on January 14, 2008. The winner -- as determined by viewer votes -- will be announced on-air on January 31, 2008. The winning avatar becomes Ford Models’ first-ever virtual world model, the fresh new face of a marketing campaign for MTV’s virtual worlds, and the star of a :30-second Elizabeth Arden/MTV co-branded spot.

    ALL I WANT FOR CHRISTMAS

Record-your-own ringtone service Sington this week unveiled the Christmas songs people will sing and send to mobiles as unique "virtual stocking-fillers". The Singtone service lets you record yourself singing a favourite song, enhances your voice and mixes it professionally with the backing track. Even if you're tone-deaf, you'll sound like a pro: in-tune and in-time. The system will also automatically score your voice, and you and your friends can listen to and rate each other's performances.

But here's the best bit: you can send your Singtone to loved ones' mobiles as a personalised Christmas greeting, which they can set to play when you phone them. Friends can share Singtones with each other and kids can make ones for their parents' phones.

Singtones are free to create and cost just £1.50 to send to mobile phones. The Christmas Singtones available include karaoke classics like Wham's "Last Christmas" and Mariah Carey's "All I want for Christmas". The high-tech company behind Singtones - Synchro Arts Limited - provides the voice alignment technology used in audio production for Hollywood blockbusters and pop music hits worldwide.

Synchro Arts believe Singtones is a great gift idea for everyone because they're personal, can be sent at the last minute and are very inexpensive. "Everyone likes presents that require a bit of effort, and are very personal," says Singtones boss Jeff Bloom. "Singtones meet these criteria and, as a bonus, cost less than a pint of lager. Ladies love hearing their boyfriends or husbands singing to them, and it's even more romantic when it's in tune every time they call."

"M" BY MARIAH CAREY: MACY’S HERALD SQUARE EVENT RECAP

The Macy’s Herald Square launch event for Mariah Carey’s debut fragrance, M by Mariah Carey, was an exciting spectacle that drew top notch press and thousands of fans. The event was one of the largest turnouts in Macy’s beauty launch history!

In true Mariah fashion, she made a surprise grand entrance in a Rolls Royce Phantom convertible, flanked by two black SUVs decorated with M by Mariah Carey flags. The entrance captured the same attention and intrigue as that of a royal dignitary or ambassador. Mariah then stepped out onto a custom purple carpet branded with an "M" logo, surrounded by paparazzi and thousands of cheering fans. The fans were secured on each side of the carpet by custom designed barricades with purple covers adorned with silver butterfly decals. Members of her security team donned sleek black suits with royal purple ties.

When Mariah entered the store, she was surprised by 50 members of the Brooklyn Music & Arts Program Drumline playing her hit song "It’s Like That." The Drumline was outfitted in purple M by Mariah Carey shirts, black pants and white tasseled hats. As Mariah walked the entire length of the purple carpet down the Broadway aisle inside Macy’s hundreds of fans cheered and clapped along with the Drumline. The fanfare continued as they packed the entire main floor and crowded the fragrance area trying to get a glimpse of the superstar.

The signing area in the Beauty Arcade was decorated with purple carpet and draping, and a fragrance factice. The area was decorated with lightboxes of the print ad for the fragrance and decorated with Mariah’s signature butterflies.

Rob Smith, Executive Vice President of Macy’s, introduced Scott Beattie, Elizabeth Arden’s Chairman and Chief Executive Officer, who made a brief speech about the development of the fragrance and Mariah’s dedication to the creation process. Rob also introduced Mariah, who was greeted by cheering and whistling fans. The fans were overjoyed to see the superstar up close and could not wait to get their chance to walk up on stage to receive an autograph and speak to Mariah! Mariah made a brief speech about how much she enjoyed working on the fragrance and how much of herself went into it. "It was a labor of love," she said.

More than 15 top national photographers captured images of Mariah on stage with her fragrance. After being interviewed by Extra, Entertainment Tonight, Access Hollywood and MTV News/TRL, a purple table branded with an "M" logo and gorgeous ivory Louis XVI oval back chair were whisked out from the side of the stage for her to be seated. Mariah then began signing the M by Mariah Carey national print ads for 200 adoring fans. The fans were so thrilled to meet Mariah that many burst into tears and a couple showed off their "Mariah" tattoos! An upbeat compilation of Mariah’s hit songs played throughout the signing on the fragrance floor to continue the excitement of the fans. Many fans were singing along while waiting for their opportunity to go up on stage.

After the 200 customer signings were complete, Mariah proceeded to the 14th floor for a private photo opp and meet-and-greet with 50 VIP fans. Once all of the customer signings and photos were finished, Mariah posed for photos with executives from Elizabeth Arden and Macy’s. She was then taken out to her awaiting Maybach where she was greeted again by cheering fans that stayed outside to catch a glimpse of Mariah before she left the building; hoping for that last photo or autograph. The fans did not stop cheering until Mariah’s car had officially left the premises!

TOP 5000 SONGS OF THE ROCK ERA

The Top 5000 Songs of the ROCK ERA are ranked in order of their chart performance on The Billboard Hot 100 --- the weekly survey of the most popular songs in the U.S. --- and the Hot 100’s prior incarnation, the Best Sellers in Stores chart.

Singles eligible for inclusion in the Top 5000 appeared on Billboard’s pop singles charts between July 9, 1955, and February 3, 2007. Pop historians generally agree that the "rock era" began in July 1955, when Bill haley and his Comets’ "(We’re Gonna) Rock Around the Clock" went to No.1.

Beginning with the chart dated July 9, 1955, songs received 500 points for every week they were in the No.1 position, 400 points for every week at No.2, 300 points for every week at No. 3, 200 points for every week at No.4, and 100 points for every week at No.5. Songs at No.6 received 95 points, No.7 received 94 points, and so on down to 71 points for No. 30. Fifty bonus points were added to a song’s total for every week it was No.1.

When all of the points were added, there were multiple ties. Those were broken by considering each song’s peak position and the number of weeks spent in peak position.

Further ties were broken by determining the number of weeks spent in the top 10, the top 40, and on the entire Hot 100. The few remaining ties were broken by entry position.

    1.Smooth
    2.We Belong Together
    3.Un-break My Heart
    4.Macarena
    5.Yeah!

MARIAH CAREY’S SWEET SMELL OF SUCCESS

    M by Mariah Carey
Eau de Parfum Spray 50 ml $99.00
Eau de Parfum Spray 100 ml $125.00
    Body Lotion 200 ml $49.00

Available at Farmers, Life and selected pharmacies and department stores from November 12, 2007.

Mariah Carey’s first fragrance launches in New Zealand on 12 November and the excitement amongst fans has seen them queuing to meet her and buy the perfume, M By Mariah Carey.

Media reports from the US speak of fan hysteria we are unlikely to see in Queen Street Auckland but nevertheless La Maria did command a Diva-dom of Diana Ross levels unequalled by recent perfume releases by Beyonce, Kylie and other celebs. One report stated, "It was standing room only outside Macy’s Herald Square, New York last night as eager fans waited through the night to be the first on line to purchase the M by Mariah Carey fragrance, and meet Mariah on October 23rd. When the doors opened this morning, fans rushed in to purchase Mariah’s premium fragrance package valued at over $300. The package, giving US customers the opportunity to join Mariah in a VIP lounge at Macy’s and have their photo taken with her, sold out within a the first few minutes of sales."

"Mariah is proving her star power to attract consumers to her M by Mariah Carey fragrance - Macy’s reports that they haven’t seen an overnight camp-out outside their doors for years - not for Beyonce, not for Usher, not for Sarah Jessica Parker."

Mariah Carey, #1 top-selling female recording artist of all time now turns her talent towards a new creative vision with the creation of this fragrance in partnership with Elizabeth Arden.

The perfume is incredibly distinctive and I found myself catching notes of it throughout the day as it develops on the skin- particularly as I wore it to an exercise class for the first time. It’s a grown-up, womanly scent that’s actually quite sexy and not at all a light girly scent. Gardenias and Tiare flowers are, after all, not for shrinking violets. “For me, creating this scent was like creating a song - it takes many notes to compose a fragrance. It’s like a beautiful melody” Carey says. The fragrance combines Tahitian Tiare flower with warm marshmallow and Moroccan Incense/Amber. "It combines my favorite scents and means so much to me. I wanted my fragrance to be like a gift to my fans.”

The bottle is extremely feminine with a beautiful glass cap in the shape of a delicate butterfly alighting on a Tiare flower. "I really love beautiful crystal, and this bottle is like a work of art you want to display. It’s a special moment when you remove the butterfly on top and apply the fragrance” says Carey.

JAY-Z PARTIES WITH MARIAH CAREY, NAS, AND DIDDY AT VIDEO SHOOT

'It felt like a celebration,' Hov says of shoot, which also featured Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel. It doesn't get any flyer than chillin' in Monaco with Dale Earnhardt Jr. and Danica Patrick — which Jay-Z did last year for his "Show Me What You Got" video. But for his fans, you really can't beat the nostalgic feel-good vibe of seeing Hov back in New York at the 40/40 Club with his crew.

Yes, the "Roc Boys" — Memphis Bleek, Beanie Sigel, Freeway ... you know the gang — assembled at Jigga's Manhattan haven of cool a couple of Fridays ago to shoot his latest video, for "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is ...)." Mariah Carey, Nas, Zab Judah and Diddy were also among those partying. "The 'Roc Boys' is the height of celebration," Jay said Tuesday night at West Hollywood, California's House of Blues a few hours before the kickoff of his short tour. He's hitting a handful of cities to promote his just-released American Gangster album, which includes "Roc Boys (And the Winner Is ...)" as well as "No Hook" and "Ignorant Sh--."

RECORD PRODUCER RECALLS TRYING TO SIGN MARIAH

In an interview with his local newspaper, the Sedona Red Rocks News, record producer Mike Lattanzi recalls trying to sign a teenage Mariah:

Lattanzi kept himself busy for years before a Mariah Carey demo tape fell into his hands. Carey was only 16 years old at the time, according to Lattanzi, and she was totally unsigned. Lattanzi wanted her to be the first artist he signed to his new label, so he and his partner, Monte Lipman, traveled to Los Angeles to try finding someone to give them the money to record her.

They wrote a proposal and a business plan, and wore suits and ties to their first meeting with a stock trader whom they figured had money to spare. “We must have looked like idiots,” Lattanzi said, laughing at the memory. “The guy just chewed us up.” “Why would I give you a hundred grand when I can take a hundred grand and actually make money with it?” the guy asked them.

Nevertheless, he liked Lattanzi and Lipman, and said he`d like to help them in the future, but the two signed a different artist a short time later and forgot about the whole thing, Lattanzi said. Lipman wound up getting a job with a record label and he`s now the president of Universal Records.

Lattanzi took a different road. From his home studio, he fed record companies with an endless stream of material and artists to sign. He worked with artists like Steve Vai, Wyclef Jean, Jewel, Nick Lachey, Jessica Simpson, Smashmouth and Robbie Williams.

    NEW MARIAH SONG 4REAL4REAL

Two new song titles from Mariah's forthcoming album have recently been registered with the music copyright holding agency, Broadcast Music, Inc. (BMI): "For The Record" [previously reported] and "4Real4Real" (or "Four Real Four Real"). Both tracks were written by Mariah, Bryan Michael Cox, and Taurian "Adonis" Shropshire. Although they are the first two titles from Mariah's new album to be registered, the songs may not make the final cut of the album. Mariah's new album is currently scheduled to be released early next year.

Bryan Michael Cox and Taurian "Adonis" Shropshire are writing/producing partners. They have worked together on songs for Chris Brown, Omarion and Danity Kane, and separately for Mary J. Blige (Cox) and Alicia Keys (Shropshire). Both of them have also separately worked with Mariah before: Bryan Michael Cox co-wrote a few songs with Mariah including her #1 hit "We Belong Together" and Taurian "Adonis" Shropshire has worked with Mariah on "So Lonely" feat. Twista.

MARIAH'S CROWD PLEASING PERFORMANCE AT GLAMOUR WOMEN OF THE YEAR AWARDS

Click here to enlargeThe critics are raving about Mariah's performance at the Glamour Women Of The Year Awards:

Fashion Wire Daily: Mariah Carey, with the African Children's Choir, opened the ceremony with a rousing, emotional number and was met with huge cheers from the audience, particularly from the sections where several school groups were seated, special guests of Glamour.

The New York Observer: The subsequent ceremony opened with pop singer Mariah Carey emerging to shrieks from the top two tiers of the balcony, which had been well-stocked with young things from various New York schools and girls' clubs. Ms. Carey, looking remarkably svelte and demure in a sleek, simple black floor-length gown with a sash, sang her 1993 hit "Hero" accompanied by a children's choir from Africa.

PRODUCER BRYAN MICHAEL COX TALKS MARIAH CAREY

Super producer Bryan Michael Cox has quite a few projects on his plate including the forthcoming Mariah Carey album. At Russell Simmons' Financial Empowerment Summit, Bryan gets all amped when talking up Mariah's project.

"It's fantastic! You guys are gonna be very, very pleased with it. Jermaine's on it, I'm on it, Danja, you know. It's phenomenal. She has great, great, great songs." It must be pretty good. Although he doesn't give us too much information, he seems pretty giddy. I hope what he contributed isn't his typical piano intro ish that sounds very music 101.

Mariah deserves only the best... so I hope he is out of that phase where everything sounds like a "Be Without You" knock off.

    MARIAH'S HALLOWEEN

Last Wednesday, Bette Midler hosted her usual boo-bender in the Big Apple, with the proceeds from partiers like Donald Trump's "Pageant Place" princesses and Mariah Carey going toward her New York Restoration Project. "Well you know it's a party, it's a benefit, but it's really a party," Midler told Fox. "And the thing that separates us from the other organizations that do this kind of thing is that we only sell trees. It's a lot of fun. We put the trees in the ground and we also put a piece of money aside so the trees will be taken care of."

FAN REVIEW OF "THE ADVENTURES OF MIMI" TOUR DVD

I not only got my hands on the Anaheim recorded tour itself but also the impressive extras. So here's the lowdown and the official verdict. It's no secret we've all suffered from poor releases from Sony when it comes to Mariah Carey DVDs. Universal has finally stepped up with not only a new offering but a genuinely good package with The Adventures Of Mimi Tour.

Right from the word go, the presentation on the DVD is a class product. You're treated to a CGI rendition of the tour stage that lets you navigate the various different options. Naturally, you'll want to jump right in and go for the concert itself - which features the entire concert. No edit verses, no cut songs - this is the full show as those thousands of fans experienced it. So that's nineteen Mariah hits.

Now I never got to see this tour in the flesh. I had my chances but a trip from the UK to America (no matter how tempting) just wasn't financially viable for me last year. Having this DVD sorts all that. This is the full experience - you even get the exchanges with the crowd, including a touching description of why Mariah has to sing "Hero" even if it isn't her favourite song or the moment when one lucky fan gets to come on stage for a hug. It's a blessed relief to enjoy the show as it was, not cut to pieces or stuffed with taped features that disrupt the flow of the concert.

The set list is safe but solid. It's all the hits that stormed the charts. Commercial, popular and what keeps the crowd cheering from start to finish. Sure, some of the album cuts would have been nice. But the tour was more a celebration of one of the greatest music comebacks in history. Mariah is pulling out the weapons that made her #1 and when times got tough, brought her back there. She knows it too. I was genuinely surprised by her improved stage presence. She's come a lot further from her 2003 days. She now seems more relaxed and happy on stage. She's still posing like a killer catwalk model of course - and looking fantastic while doing it. But she's absolutely radiant on stage, for the first time really loving being up on that stage performing for the audience.

Of course that audience came for "The Voice" as will anyone watching at home. Fair play - these vocals (for my money anyway) are not dubbed. These are stripped right from the concert. They aren't her best vocals, they aren't her worst. They are more raw, more passionate and a little looser. Best example is her rendition of "Vision Of Love". To me, this record always sounds as fresh as the day it was first released. The word timeless doesn't do this classic justice. But Mariah experiments with her rendition. It's not entirely successful and demonstrates her weaker moments towards the climax but it shows her willing to shake things up for a more interesting listen.

Speaking of interesting, the camera has really tried to visually keep things interesting on the eye not just the ear. Filmed concerts can get quite boring without some good visuals to hold the attention. There are some excellent sweeps across both stages that take in the scope of the venue. Some nice cinematic ones too with "Fly Like A Bird" as well, where the camera starts on the floor of the crowd, moves forward and upwards at the stage to Mariah and the army of gospel singers. Some missed opportunities on stuff like "Heartbreaker" and "Honey" I felt. When you've got a swarm of dancers coming down some elegant stairs, you want to see it and not crowd clips. Credit to them, they made it fun to watch and got as many varied camera angles as possible.

There's more than just the concert of course - we have extras. One of the more interesting ones is the Juke Box. Basically you have 12 credits and can create your own set list. You decide what order the songs will play in. Quite a novel feature and one I hadn't seen before. All the concert skits are included on "Lovers & Haters" for some comedy value. There's the karaoke on six tracks, that you can have with or without Mariah singing. The Behind The Scenes feature is about ten minutes long, you get some interviews with the Tatums and Rachel, some Michael as well as Mariah herself on the tour bus.

The better features are on the second disc. The documentary is brilliant, you actually get some fresh information that aren't just the usual recycled sound bites. The set designs are discussed, proposed/rejected concepts, the whole thought process and experience of performing on the second stage, meeting Rachel and all the dancers, the backing singers (who are very playful in their interviews), rehearsals and bloopers on stage including her near costume malfunction.

There is a discussion on the set list for the concert. This is very insightful. Randy Jackson discussed "Vanishing", what song Mariah likes to open the show with, how she experiments with merging certain remixed songs ("Heartbreaker", "My All" and "Dreamlover"). This part is brilliant - you hear Mariah discuss the history of the mixes, creatively, and she mentions she does want to go back to Australia. Good news for all loyal fans down under.

She also touches on celebrities in the audience, the tragic passing of O.D.B. (rest in peace), some of the moments from other tours (fighting Bianca on the Rainbow tour, etc), plus the experience of being on stage with Trey, Boyz II Men, Da Brat and Jay-Z across the various shows. Her discussion on "Hero" is very, very interesting. She touches on the need to perform it. She makes it clear it's not her favourite (quote on quote "corny") but knows that it's helped her. Mostly it's helped her fans and many people are coming to hear just that song for the power of its message. She also discusses "Make It Happen" returning to the set list through fan popularity and the thrill of performing "We Belong Together" at the finale since it changed her career and is many couples anthem. Cute moment when she discusses Patti LaBelle and the "Butterfly Outro" - she wants to leave the stage singing like she does to the song that most sums her up.

I cannot stress how great this documentary is. It's worth the price of the DVD alone. Mariah discusses pretty much all the songs she performs on the show. I find the creative process behind why what songs were chosen and what it feels like to perform those songs live. If you do, this 60 minutes of footage will have you enthralled. It's about the music and it's for the fans. Speaking of which, the fan messages near the end are cute. I love the girl who calls Mariah an angel from above, who helped her get through losing her father. Bless her.

This is - finally - the Mariah DVD we've all been waiting for. Excellent features, good, uninterrupted features, superb footage and decent vocals. This is worth the wait and what the fans have been waiting for. Universal, if you're listening - keep them coming.

MARIAH CAREY WAXES LYRICAL MINUS MOUSTACHE

Pictures of Mariah apparently having her upper lip waxed in public continue to delight the UK press.

Today’s Sunday Mirror Magazine includes a multi-picture feature about the incident: "We suspected Mariah was a diva, but now we’ve got hard evidence- pictures of an assistant blotting Mariah’s sweat moustache for her.

And while most people tend to do their grooming in private, Mariah decided to have her face `seen to’ in full view of a whole lotta people. In fact, at one point it looked like she was getting a facial hair waxing too. With her chin and upper lip suitably matted, the singer went on to put in an appearance on US TV, where she was promoting her new perfume, M. Mmmm indeed."

    EXCLUSIVE WESTLIFE MARK FEEHILY INTERVIEW

Throughout the last 9 years the band have travelled all over the world, won Record of the Year four times and even made the notorious Christmas Number 1 spot but what is Mark's highlight so far: "I definitely think that one of the best things that I never thought I'd achieve was doing a duet with Mariah Carey," he explains.

"Over the years we've spent quite a bit of time with her - not a lot of time, I don't want to exaggerate - but if I was to tell my 10 to 15 year old self that I was to meet her, never mind collaborate with her and hang out with her at her house, I think I would of literally crumbled into ash on the floor to be honest."

"She was really really friendly and there was no sort of power thing going on where she was like 'I'm Mariah and your Westlife and you're lucky to be here' sort of thing. It was a lot of hanging out and going for dinner and being mates. I mean we weren't liking up to her and in a world where she is surrounded by people that lick up to her and brown nose her I don't know if she just thought it was nice to have a genuine time hanging out with a bunch of lads or whatever."

Although they he enjoyed hanging out with stars like Mariah in the past life isn't quite so rock and roll for Mark now. These days he's more likey to stay in on a Saturday night and catch a bit of X Factor: "I don't have a favourite yet to be honest. I think it's yet to unfold as to whether or not I like anybody in it this year," he says.

    ELIZABETH ARDEN FLIPS TO PROFIT

Elizabeth Arden Inc reported a meager quarterly profit on Friday that still beat Wall Street estimates, helped by higher international sales and the launch of the Mariah Carey perfume. The company, known for its namesake and Britney Spears line of perfumes, also stood by its full-year profit and sales forecasts.

Net income was $350,000, or 1 cent a share, in the fiscal first quarter that ended Sept 30, compared with a loss of $1.3 million, or 5 cents a share, a year earlier.

Excluding restructuring costs, the company earned 4 cents a share, beating analysts' expectations of a 5-cent loss per share, according to Reuters Estimates. Arden had previously forecast a loss for the period, citing stepped-up spending for the Mariah Carey perfume.

Sales rose 6.7 percent to $271.8 million, helped by the launch of the "M" by Mariah Carey perfume, an 18-percent rise in international sales of its self-branded products, and demand for its fragrances in the United States. The New York-based company said it still expects to earn in the range of $1.15 per share to $1.20 per share for the first half of fiscal 2008.

However, it now expects sales to grow by 5 to 7 percent, compared with its previous forecast of 6 to 7 percent.

Elizabeth Arden stood by its full-year earnings and sales forecasts -- sales are expected to rise by 5 to 7 percent. and earnings are expected to come in at $1.65 per share to $1.75 a share. Analysts expect it to earn $1.68 a share for the full year, according to Reuters Estimates.

    BRITNEY IS NO MARIAH!

The following abstract is taken from Variety Magazine’s review of Britney Spears forthcoming album "Blackout:"

Contrasting the images in the tabloids, Britney Spears displays herself as a woman focused on romance, whether it be one night stands or one night stands that last for two weekends. It’s frothy, good natured, sexy and superficial. As recovery-from-meltdown albums go, "Blackout" is no "Emancipation of Mimi," but then again Miss Spears has never appeared to have the artistic aspirations of Mariah Carey and Miss Carey has never sounded like she craved sex and a party scene the way Spears does here.
