MC'S DAY AT THE BALLPARK

Enjoying her time overseas in Japan, Mariah Carey was busy tossing out the first pitch at a baseball game at the Tokyo Dome on Wednesday (May 28). Wearing a pair of heels for her mound duties, Mimi was all smiles as she posed with the players before the Yomiuri Giants took on the Rakuten Golden Eagles.

As previously reported by Gossip Girls, Mariah arrived at Narita International Airport on Sunday alongside her 27-year-old husband Nick Cannon. The couple, who have said they are “delighted” with their newly married status, plan on attending the MTV Japan awards on Friday (May 30).

JAPAN LOVES MARIAH CAREY

As previously reported by the Gossip Girls, Mariah Carey and her new husband Nick Cannon boarded a plane at LAX bound for Japan. And she seems to be having a great time.

The “Touch My Body” singer has been hanging out in the Land of the Rising Sun for a few days now, and it seems the Japanese can’t get enough of her.

According to an insider’s report, she caused chaos on the streets of Daikanyama on Tuesday when she stopped into a the Kamawanu boutique along with an entourage that included a hair stylist, makeup artist, film crew, and security guards.

Witnesses told press that fans lined the streets in an attempt to catch a glimpse of the “Honey” songstress, to the point that she finally had to leave the scene without signing autographs, taking pictures, or even stopping to say hi.

ZULU TATTOO

On a recent trip to Los Angeles, I spoke with famed tattoo artist Zulu, whose celebrity clientele include newlyweds Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon. Ok, lets have the dish on Mariah Carey and her new husband, Nick Cannon.

Mariah was really cool. She didn't really want to talk about what was happening because I think she was calling before they got married. They said, this is very confidential, we don't want this to get out. Tattooing so many celebrities, you have to be discreet. They let me know what they wanted and I drew it up ahead of time and they approved some drawings and when the day came, we went out to their beautiful house in Beverly Hills. We sat and talked about refining the drawings and they gave me some lunch. Mariah was really mellow, real confident, not overbearing in the least, she was polite but she knew what she wanted. She was assertive, which was cool. She decided she wanted a butterfly because she's all about butterfly. It was her very first tattoo. She sat for it and didn't flinch. She's a tough cookie. She found me on the web, and probably through her celebrity circle. It was Nick Cannon's first tattoo as well. He got some script on his back. It was a really good experience for everyone, especially for the first tattoo, because that tends to make people a little bit nervous. They did well, like people who had a million tattoos.

THE SURREAL WORLD OF MC

The nicest diva in the music industry, Mariah Carey is back with a vengeance, boasting a brand-new album and a slender physique. She talked to a tipsy Jessica Huie about the stress of dieting, the importance of friends and her relationship with God.

Last night Mariah Carey got me drunk. I'd turned up at a studio located by the Hudson River, in Manhattan, for an 11:30pm interview with one of the globe's biggest superstars. Three hours later... I was still waiting. Gazing out from the 14th floor of the Hudson Studios, I took in the breathtaking magnificence of the New York skyline by night, mentally quizzing the woman whose comeback from an emotional breakdown seven years ago sensationally saw her The Emancipation of Mimi album sell 10 million copies worldwide, cementing her iconic status in pop history. Exciting stuff. Despite the jet lag that has crept in 24 hours after landing at JFK, I couldn't wait to get a peek inside the wonderful world of MC.

At 3am I get the okay to go through for the interview. Three French journalists are waiting behind me - one dozing on the couch, another downing espressos to ward off exhaustion, the third obviously annoyed that Mariah's publicist has given me the okay to take his slot and conduct the interview before sleep gets the better of me.

I'm asked to sit behind a large black screen on a director's stool. Mariah is sitting on the other side. I feel like I'm about to audition for American Idol. I'm handed a glass of wine, which I down quickly in the hope that the alcohol will awaken my dreary senses a little.

I'm called in, and there she is, a slimmed-down 5ft 9in vision of loveliness, even at this ridiculous hour. Don't believe the hype or the paparazzi's unflattering tabloid pictures: Mariah Carey is gorgeous in the flesh, although after my interview I'm not altogether convinced that she knows it.

She stands to give me a hug and I'm bounced by her ample bosom. However, aside from this one surgical enhancement, there's no evidence of the alleged £150,000 liposuction that is supposed to have resulted in Mariah's fabulous new body. "I know the whole UK is freaking out that I had some crazy plastic surgery done, but hit this," and she motions for me to hit her thigh, which is rock-hard from hours of lunges and toning squats. "Honestly. It's working out and diet. Look at what I'm eating right now: olives! It makes me upset that people think I've had surgery 'cos let's discuss how annoying the dieting process was. My girls will eat really good fried food, and I also love sweet plantain and rice and peas, but I can't eat it! If I eat it, it's this small [she signals to a coin-size portion]. Do you want some wine?" I respond that I do, and so my professionalism (along with my sobriety) begins its speedy decline.

Half an hour later and my carefully planned line of questioning is forgotten. The situation isn't helped by the fact that we are sitting in a darkened room lit only by scores of scented tea lights that, while creating a lovely chilled-out ambience, make is impossible for me to see my notebook. Mariah's lovely assistant Jim appears and signals that my time is up. "No, Jim we're not done! It's my fault, I've been distracting her - we need five more minutes."

A tipsy half an hour later, and we're talking men. I ask MC if she has someone, and she responds: "I don't know... do you have someone?", which prompts a conversation into whether you ever really have somebody or if a relationship is merely a transient thing that is never assured. Fascinating stuff, even at 3am. Despite my being happily ensconced in a relationship, MC's trying to set me up with her nephew. "He's 33 and has just graduated from Harvard Law School. He was even voted one of the world's most eligible bachelors... you'd be perfect together!" What I really want to know, however, is why, at 37, with beauty, brains and a wicked sense of humour, Mariah herself hasn't been snapped up.

I ask her if she wants children. "I do if it's right, I don't if it's wrong. I'm probably so much more insecure than you. I don't know that I've ever been loved or ever felt loved or fulfilled emotionally, and I know that I'm able to give that. But I don't know if I'm able to receive it. Maybe I just don't feel like anyone could ever care about me that way... I don't know. I don't mean to say that in a weird way, but I'm so grateful for Jesus Christ in my life. I'm so grateful for the Lord in my life. Because if you're not ashamed to admit that you know God, you feel like, no matter what, you're going to be Okay, 'cos there is one who loves you. Maybe He's not of this world, and maybe I'm not supposed to be loved by someone of this world, because maybe I'm too difficult. I can accept that I'm a bad girl... maybe I'm not worth it."

Though we've just met, it's hard to hear this beautiful woman speak about herself in this way, and the Pinot Grigo makes me want to give her a hug, and I feel my eyes welling up. This is certainly the most bizarre interview of my career, but also the most real. I remind her that the best things in life are hard work, while thinking how hard it is to be a woman.

She continues: "I wish I could be with a person who was exactly the same as me racially. Someone who would understand and not judge me. I believe that he's still out there. But if there's someone who just cares about me because I'm a famous person, it's freaking ridiculous."

Trust is a huge issue for Mariah, and so it was than when an interview with our very own Jasmine Dotiwala, who heads up MTV Base, resulted in a meeting of minds between the two inspirational women of colour, a very special friendship was born. When I mention I know Jasmine, Mariah instantly relaxes and touchingly explains: "She's just such a good person. It's so rare for me to find people that I feel close to. We met during an interview and we just had so much in common. She didn't expect to like me, but we are so similar and I really care about and love her. We spend Christmas together now, we are family" She breaks into song: "I've got all my sisters with me! She is my heart, and nobody can take her place. Do you want some more wine?"

Two more close friends of MC's are Rachel, who sits in on our chat for the duration, and her nine-year-old daughter Sade. "Rachel's daughter is the coolest girl ever, and she's one of my best friends. She's a beautiful girl, she laughs at me 'cos she knows that I'm eternally 12. She's like 'What are you talking about? MC's not my auntie she's my friend!' We are like dumb and dumber, in fact, no, I'm dumber and dumber!"

I question whether it's being well into her 30s that has allowed MC the confidence to revel in her sexuality on the new album. "Are you freaking kidding me? I'm 12!," is all she'll say, explaining that she no longer celebrates birthdays, preferring to view them as "anniversaries". So how will she celebrate her imminent anniversary? "Honestly, I'd like to be 29 forever. I'm gonna be with Jasmine and friends somewhere fabulous. I'm so excited about that."

Despite the insecurities that MC admits still dog her, the album itself, E=MC2, is a sure-fire winner, and an anthem for sexually empowered confident women in control. The first single, "Touch My Body" is a catchy send-up that sees a needy geek entranced by her svelte form as she invites him to "wrestle her to the floor". As diva-ish as they come (after all she thinks nothing of keeping the press waiting until the early hours of the morning for a 20-minute conversation), she's a fabulous diva, famous for having no clue as to the number of bathrooms in her home. I wonder if the fact that she's rarely spotted in the front row of the Milan fashion shows, or even alongside Beyonce and Jay-Z at the BET Awards, is a deliberate attempt to maintain the removed mystique of her stardom.

"I do award shows if they are all about me!" she laughs heartily. "I do them if I'm gonna have a promotional moment, but they're a pain in the ass. When you're on TV, you've got a camera in your face, and I don't want to deal with that, it's annoying. They're in your face, they're not even showing your waist, they're right in your face with the worst lighting ever! It's like... why? But it is what it is. Again, God had brought me a long, long way. I know it's a lot to do with growing up in suburban America where you don't feel that normal love."

Whether or not there is a man deserving of Mariah's love in her life, she's adored by millions, has a yacht in Capri, a new home in the Bahamas, wealth beyond her wildest dreams, and a set of genuinely good friends. Then there's the new album, which is full of club-banging summer anthems and sprinklings of T-Pain and Damian Marley to being the MC sound bang into 2008. It's sure to meet, if not surpass, the dizzy success of the last record.

Her biggest blessing, however, is her relationship with God. I ask Mariah if she ever reflects on the strength of character it must have taken to overcome the breakdown she suffered years ago in such spectacular fashion. "I just look back and say, 'Thank you Jesus, thank you Lord for getting me through my life and delivering me, for giving me strength when I almost lost it all.' I can't take credit for myself, you know why? In the word of the song 'My Saving Grace' on the Charmbracelet album. Whatever anybody else ever says, I say 'I still exist because You catch my every fall'."

Ninety minutes after out interview began, we say goodbye, and I come face to face with the irate French journalist. Avoiding eye contact, I stumble back out into the brisk New York night air and smile. I'm not certain whether it was actually me who conducted the interview or Mariah herself. Regardless. I feel I've had an insight into one of music's greatest icon. It won't be an interview I forget - I shall always remember the night Mariah Carey got me drunk.

MC & NICK PLANNING SECOND WEDDING

Mariah Carey is already planning a second wedding to husband Nick Cannon; and this time, the world-renowned diva plans to make her nuptials an extravagant event, according to a source close to the singer. "It's going to be held in New York City in the next six weeks. Picture a wedding on the scale of Liza Minelli's and you'll be on the right track," said the source.

Mariah, 38, last week told talk show host Ellen DeGeneres that the second wedding would be next year; and the guests at her secret ceremony in the Bahamas were "mainly people there to do my hair and help me with the dress".

The source adds, "She wants over 2,000 guests and the budget will be well over $4 million and she'll have at least 14 bridesmaids." One name already confirmed on the guest list is fiery British supermodel Naomi Campbell.

MC & NICK AT "OPERATION SMILE"

It’s been a whirlwind couple of weeks for newlyweds Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon. And last night they were spotted out and about looking about as happy as two people could look.

The “Touch My Body” singer and her new hubby were all smiles at the 5th Annual Operation Smile event at Skylight Studio in New York City. And why not? They were helping underprivileged kids with facial deformities.

And now that they’re married, it sounds like Mariah and Nick may be thinking about starting a family. According to a report, one of Carey’s assistants recently called trendy baby boutique Petit Tresor to order a few items, including fabric samples and a butterfly-themed nursery idea.

However, according to the “Always Be My Baby” singer’s manager, Benny Medina, she doesn’t have a bun in the oven just yet. Although it may not be too far off- three weeks ago Mariah told press that having children is “part of the whole purpose of getting married.”

HANGIN WITH THE CANNONS

Our Kevin Frazier was the only journalist allowed inside the Six Flags Magic Mountain party thrown by Nick Cannon for Mariah Carey. Kevin presented the couple with a blender, which Mariah said would be perfect for her protein shakes.

Nick and his Mrs. entertained friends and family until well after midnight, riding roller coasters and playing games at the amusement park north of Los Angeles. Nick paid more than six figures for the party, as a surprise for his new bride. It was a welcome break for the couple, who has been besieged by paparazzi ever since their secret nuptials in the Bahamas.

According to Kevin, Mariah and Nick were very playful and affectionate all night long and look like two people, very in love.

MARIAH AND NICK FIRST PUBLIC APPEARANCE AS A MARRIED COUPLE

After playing coy in the days surrounding their semi-secret wedding, Nick Cannon and Mariah Carey are finally stepping out as a married couple. The pair made their first appearance as man and woman at Time magazine's "100 Most Influential People in the World" event Thursday night, and more material has emerged from their interview with People magazine about their nuptials in the Bahamas last week. Continuing an ongoing celebrity tradition, Carey, 38, and Cannon, 27, told the magazine that they got tattoos to mark the occasion — which was a tip-off to some friends about the wedding. "One thing [few people] knew was we got tattoos a few weeks earlier. So anyone who saw my tattoo wasn't surprised," said Carey.

Cannon added, "To me rings are special and exciting, but tattoos mean more than anything. They're forever and ever. They professed our love." Carey said she only told "about four people" about the wedding, and only a dozen guests attended the sunset affair, where they dined on Maine lobster and sipped Dom Perignon champagne. The couple wed at Carey's Bahamian estate on April 30 after sparks began flying just a few months earlier in late March on the set of Carey's new video, "Bye Bye," in which she cast Cannon as her love interest.

"From the first time we sat down to discuss the video at the Beverly Hills Hotel, we connected," Cannon told the magazine. "We had so much in common spiritually, and we laugh at the same things. I didn't have to put on my mac-daddy-suave mode. I was able to be myself with her. We are both eternally 12 years old." The wedding was presided over by Carey's pastor, Clarence Keaton, who flew in from New York. "The whole wedding was really beautiful and sweet," she said. "Being there with loved ones under the sky ... it was a spiritual moment." (The role of the Bahamian pastor who earlier said he presided over the wedding was unclear.)

Watching his bride-to-be walk down the aisle, the typically gregarious Cannon said he was struck speechless. "I was elated, but I was thinking, 'Don't pass out,' " he told People. "[The pastor] said, 'The eyes are the window to the soul,' then gave us an entire minute to stare into each other's eyes. So I was saying, 'Don't cry.' " (Watch Cannon squirm, two days before the wedding, when asked by MTV News about engagement rumors.) The newlyweds say they've already started talking about having children. "It's part of the whole purpose of getting married," Carey said. "I'd just want our children to have the best childhood and upbringing they possibly could."

MARIAH'S EX SUGGESTED CANNON FOR VIDEO

Mariah Carey's ex-boyfriend may have driven Nick Cannon into the pop diva's arms when he suggested she use the rapper/actor in her new video. Insiders claim it was music producer Mark Sudack who urged the pop superstar to call Cannon and ask him to play her love interest in the 'Bye Bye' video.

Cannon and Carey fell in love on the set two months ago, and the couple wed last week. A source tells Life + Style magazine, "Mark thought Nick was a good-looking guy who'd be perfect for the video. But, as soon as Mariah met Nick, she fell for him. And everyone on set could tell Nick was crazy about her, too."

MARIAH IS "OVER THE MOON" WITH HAPPINESS

Mariah Carey is “over the moon” about her recent marriage to Nick Cannon, according to her friend, Vogue editor Andre Leon Talley.

“She is very happy,” he said at the Metropolitan Museum Costume Institute Gala in New York on Monday. “I’ve spoken with her and she is superb. She is over the moon.

“I received an email from her [Monday] and she is so happy. She really sounds like someone on her honeymoon.” Talley also had words of praise for the ‘Touch My Body’ star’s new husband. “I love Nick Cannon for Mariah,” he said. “For Mariah, this is poetry.”

As for her wedding fashion, Talley said the wedding happened so quickly that “I didn’t have the time to offer her any style tips!” The pair wed in a small ceremony in the Bahamas at the start of this month. Mariah’s cousin, Shawn McDonald, reportedly walked her down the aisle.

And according to insiders, Nick and Mariah are planning a big party for all the songbird’s New York pals when they return from their honeymoon. This is Mariah’s second marriage. She was married to record executive Tommy Mottola from 1993 – 1998.

Nick was previously engaged to Victoria’s Secret model Selita Ebanks in 2007. However, the couple called off the engagement that same year. When asked what he loved about Carey, Cannon said “everything.”

DON'T WORRY MC HAS A PRENUP

Mariah Carey — yes, she’s married, it’s confirmed, it really happened down there in the Bahamas. She is now Mrs. Nick Cannon. You always thought you’d marry Mariah? Well, you’re too late now!

More importantly: Miss Mariah and Mr. Cannon have a very nice prenuptial agreement. Mariah apparently told a mutual pal of ours: "Anyone who thinks we didn't have a prenup is smoking something!"

This is not the Mariah Carey of old. She is a smart, smart businesswoman. For example: Post-Tommy Mottola, Carey nabbed $50 million from her short-lived deal with Virgin Records. After "Glitter," they just paid her all that to walk away!

She’s had three hit albums since then: "Charmbracelet," "Emancipation of Mimi" and the current "E=MC2." She has her own perfume line, as well. Mariah also has substantial real estate holdings, and let’s not forget the publishing royalties. Her name is on every song. This is not Whitney. She has a small fortune, and she’s not about to lose it, even in love.

MC DITCHES TALK SHOW FOR HONEYMOON?

We still don’t know for sure what’s going on with Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon but from what we can gather from Mariah’s cancelled “View” appearance today she’s preoccupied, most likely, with her honeymoon.

According to reports, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon got engaged last week and then decided to forgo although that wedding planning hoopla and make honest people out of each other. But one thing they also apparently decided to do without is a pre-nup.

Carey and Cannon are both big stars, but we’re betting her bank account is just a little bigger than his. After all, she recently tied Elvis Presley’s record for longest running number ones on Billboard’s Hot 100 chart and is the best selling artist of the 90’s.

As for Nick Cannon, his recent accomplishments include the movie, “Goal II: Living the Dream.” Ok, we don’t mean to be hard on Nick, he’s obviously a very talented guy. But being about ten years Mariah Carey’s junior, he still has a way to go in the achievement department.

Which means he’d have a lot more to gain in an ugly divorce than Mariah. But let’s not be so cynical.

After all, he did apparently spring for a custom-designed 17-Carat diamond ring that ran somewhere around $2.5 million. You can’t get that out of a Cracker Jack Box.

But on the other end of the coin, there’s word that that same ring was once on Selita Ebanks’ finger, till the engagement ended. And we can’t imagine Mimi would accept a second hand ring…even if it is 17 carats.

But as these two are off doing what celebrities who hastily marry do (fighting on a honeymoon in some ridiculously exclusive resort) we won’t be getting any definitive answers anytime soon.

And there’s still the remote possibility that this whole this is a celebrity prank devised by Ashton Kutcher.

FOX 411 CONFIRMS: MARIAH CAREY IS MARRIED

Call her Mrs. Cannon. Mariah Carey indeed married actor Nick Cannon last week down in the Bahamas.

Even though there were several unsourced reports at the end of last week, I can now confirm the wedding did take place. Carey, according to her friends, is "blissful."

"She's never been comfortable talking about her personal life," said one friend. That would make her unique among celebrities. Maybe more celebs should follow her lead.

Carey is 38, so she probably heard her biological clock ticking. Cannon is a nice guy. I met him when he did the movie "Bobby" and he was an articulate, literate young man. So congrats to Mariah, who friends say had a true "Vision of Love."

MC ON THE COVER OF VIBE

ME & MARIAH

Vibe's exclusive sneak peek and editor's note from the sizzling June 2008 issue, available on newsstands today!

EDITOR'S LETTER - VIBE and Mariah do go back like babies and pacifiers. There was a Mariah cover in April 1996, around the time of Daydream. That excellent story was written by Elysa Gardner (now of USA Today). In 2003, around the time of Charmbracelet, Lola Ogunnaike (now of CNN's American Morning) wrote another fantastic cover piece.

As for myself, in 1998, when I was editor-in-chief the first time, I flew to San Francisco (on Mariah time, you have to be ready to get up and go anywhere at a moment's notice) and then rode north to hilly Sonoma County, in Northern California's wine country. Carey and I drank red wine until late into the night. She'd just left her marriage. I think she was releasing a greatest hits package (#1's). She was in a good, if tough, space. That space from which good art and new beauty is sometimes born. She was fun. And open. Soon after, she went through some well-documented rough times. But she's been back for a while, and the new album is an homage to Einstein's theory of relativity, first introduced in a 1905 paper called, "Does The Inertia of a Body Depend Upon Its Energy Content?" I thought you knew.

People forget, because Mariah is so pretty and so about hair and boobs and antics, that she is a songwriter who will go down in history as one of the best, one of the most prolific, and one of the most successful. The sales and radio records she's breaking are mammoth, and crucial too—because with every one she topples, it's clearer that Miss Carey is the true People's Choice. She writes and sings music that people sing to themselves, music that we move our bodies to. She is redefining—in these complicated cultural times, times in which niches are nich-ier than ever, times in which even the sale of creative content is in question—what it is to be popular (believed, embraced, or perpetuated by ordinary people). She's buttah fly, for sure.

The staff (Robyn Forest, Memsor Kamarake, and Shanel Odum) and I got on Mariah Time, this time during the last week of March. First the shoot wasn't happening. Then we were going to Paris. Then the shoot was going to be in Manhattan. Then we got on a plane to the West Indies, bound for a pearl of a private island off the coast of the exquisite isle of Antigua. Odum describes Jumby Bay beautifully in her second cover story (she wrote abut Mary. J Blige for the February issue), but be clear: Over and above the grass tennis courts, crystalline waters, the Cavalier Rum– glazed prawns, and the flawless, breezy-sunny climate, it's the people of Antigua and Jumby Bay—Thelma, Lissue, Elaine, Glenroy, and everyone else—who make the place. They keep a staff blog, too. It's as cool as they are.

We got lots done this issue. Went deep into places, near and far. The fashion story ("Boarding School," page 106) was also shot in the Caribbean (Puerto Rico). There's a surfer actually surfing on the fashion pages, as well as a (black) Olympic swimmer in the V Heat section. What can I tell you? It's summer.

The Irv Gotti/Murder Inc. Oral history ("It's Murder!," page 94) takes you from Queens, N.Y., to the Murder Mansion in Beverly Hills, and then back to Manhattan's Meatpacking District for a shoot at which Ja Rule was taller (and more charming) than you think, Deb Lorenzo as gorgeous as she seems on VH-1's addictive Gotti's Way, and Irv, a hit-maker's hit-maker, an old-fashioned wild-man, was as boisterous as he wanted to be.

Even Nate Dogg, who is recovering from a stroke in Los Angeles, came to the phone to talk about making 2003's "21 Questions" with 50 Cent for "Summer Bangers" (page 75). We were closing our own "20 Questions" (page 120) when, as has been expected, Beyonce Giselle Knowles was married to Shawn "Jay-Z" Carter. Congratulations to the happy couple. Best wishes, in fact, to everyone out there working hard, planning, being open to opportunity, being crazy in love, studying, smelling the roses, seeking thrills, being persistent, letting go, shouting it out, being bold, trying to be somebody, trying to make art out of the trial and joys of life. Singing your songs your way. Best, best wishes to those out here trying to live. L'chaim! As ever, Danyel Smith

P.S. The VIBE staff as a whole went above and beyond for this issue. If I could, I'd blow up the whole masthead right here on ed. note. Thank you for pushing it.

MC'S NEPHEW DENIES WEDDING RUMOR

Reports came out that Mariah Carey and rapper Nick Cannon tied the knot in a “very impulsive” ceremony in the Bahamas, but Mariah Carey’s nephew says the story is bogus.

Shawn McDonald was in the Bahamas this week and wrote on the following on his Facebook profile status:

“Shawn can officially say that what you may or may not have read or heard is not true…”

Believe what you want, I suppose. This story isn’t at all unlikely though. Mariah has always had a few screws lose. I mean, who gets married after dating for a month? What are the odds of that working out…how about…nonexistant?

MC can try to prove me wrong though. I welcomed it.

FRIENDS REACT TO MARIAH AND NICK'S MARRIAGE

Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon's recent wedding not only surprised fans, but their friends and close associates, too. "I'm shell shocked," a source in Carey's camp tells People. "As far as I know, they are happy together."

Music mogul Russell Simmons said he didn't know about the nuptials ahead of time, but sees why the pairing works. "Whatever makes them happy," he said Friday. "They have a lot in common and should have a lot of fun together."

Even Cannon's family was surprised by the move. "It's crazy right! We're definitely happy. Well wishes!" Cannon's brother, Gabriel, tells People. "I'm trying to be like him and I love him very much."

Another insider says the newlyweds didn't know each other before Carey's video shoot for her song "Bye, Bye" in the Caribbean on March 26. "Nick was cast as the romantic lead and was flown to Antigua where they met so basically their [romance] started during the shoot," the insider says, adding, "She's very into religion and Nick is very into religion. That's something they bonded on."

Whatever their connection, Jacob Arabo, who created the diamond sparkler that the actor gave the singer as an engagement ring, tells People that his friend is in love with Carey. Still, others seem more dubious of the whirlwind romance. "This is what Nick does; Nick is such a sucker for love," said a source close to Cannon. "He falls in love so quick."

Adds another Cannon insider: "We all thought it was a joke, but he's been impulsive before. He's a mini mogul but still young and maybe this was a crush that went too far. Well see. He takes awhile to come down from the cloud."

"MARIAH CAREY IS HITCHED TO NICK CANNON" - REVEREND

Neither Mariah Carey nor Nick Cannon has confirmed they are man and wife yet, but a clergyman on the Bahamian island of Eluthera has said they are - and that he married them. Bishop Clifford Petty of the National Church of God in the Caribbean told People.com that he performed the ceremony but gave no details. Other reports have said the pair wed on Wednesday.

The 39-year-old "Touch My Body" singer and her 27-year-old actor beau reportedly obtained a marriage license on Eleuthera, where Carey has a home. Petty's church is on Eleuthera, in the town of Governor's Harbour, but he didn't say where the ceremony took place.

MARIAH CANCELS THE VIEW APPEARANCE

Mariah Carey has canceled her scheduled appearance on The View this Monday, Usmagazine.com has confirmed. The singer, 39, wed beau Nick Cannon, 27, at her new home in Eleuthera in the Bahamas this week, the New York Post reported after Latina magazine broke news of their nuptials Thursday.

Family member Linda Cannon told the E! network that Nick called her with the good news. "Yes, we know. He called us and told us all about it," she said. "We are happy for him. If that is what he wants, then we are happy for him." She added, "I'm not going to give you any details, but we are happy for him."

DID MARIAH CAREY OBTAIN A MARRIAGE LICENSE?

While it remained unclear at press time whether Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon are already married or are planning on make it official this weekend, People magazine on Friday (May 2) cited an unnamed source as saying that the singer obtained a marriage license in the Caribbean island of Eleuthera, which would be the first step toward making the couple's whirlwind romance official. However, a representative at the island's register's office told MTV News on Friday that she has no record of a license in Carey or Cannon's names.

Eleuthera is located next to the island of Windermere, where Carey reportedly owns a home. The Web site of the island's register's office states that couples wishing to get married there need only spend one day in the Bahamas before submitting an application for a marriage license; they also must fill out the application together at the register's office, pay a fee of $40, and in Mariah's case, a certification of her divorce (from her ex-label head Tommy Mottola) must be produced. The license is valid for three months. People's report states that Carey herself obtained the license.

Some have speculated that Carey actually may have married or be marrying Mark Sudack (a member of her management team whom she has long been rumored to be dating), but TMZ.com claimed on Friday that those reports are untrue. With confirmation that the license was obtained, Bahamian family law attorney Monique Gomez told People that the "minister would make sure [the license] goes into the registry. It's still a valid marriage even if it's not filed. Anywhere in the world."

Neither Cannon's nor Carey's spokespeople have returned calls for comment from MTV News, and Cannon evaded a series of questions from MTV News on the matter Monday. However, a relative of Cannon's, Linda Cannon (her relationship to the singer was not detailed), reportedly told E! News on Thursday, "Yes, we know. He called us and told us all about it. We are happy for him. If that is what he wants then we are happy for him. I'm not going to give you any details, but we are happy for him."

Carey, 38 and Cannon, 27, reportedly have been dating for less than two months, which is half as long as Cannon was going out with Victoria's Secret model Selita Ebanks when he proposed to her with a 15-carat stone via a JumboTron in New York's Times Square. Cannon and Ebanks broke up in October.

Last week, Carey was spotted wearing a large diamond ring that began the speculation that she and Cannon were an item. According to The Associated Press, famed blingmaster to the stars Jacob the Jeweler quickly put out a press release about the ring Cannon reportedly gave Carey, which described it as "crafted from platinum and features a square emerald cut fancy light pink diamond as the center stone surrounded by 58 intense pink diamonds and two half moon diamonds on each side. The total carat weight of the ring - center stone is 10 carats - is a jaw-dropping 17 carats with a value of $2.5 million."

A number of media outlets have speculated that this episode is a publicity stunt, though the couple have been seen in public numerous times since Cannon filmed a cameo in the video for Carey's new single, "Bye Bye", several months ago.

MARIAH CAREY BY STEVIE WONDER

I could never describe or measure the level of respect and love I have for Mariah Carey in just 300 words, but you know, I'll do my best. I've met only three people who had a truly wonderful voice and spirit to match: my first wife Syreeta, Minnie Riperton and Mariah. Obviously she is talented and has a great voice, but when a person has the opportunity to be heard and seen, at the end of the day she will also be felt. I think Mariah has enjoyed such success at 38 because she's a good person; her heart is good. I love her spirit. When I lost my mother, she was one of the first people to reach out to me. She was away, but she still found a way to call me up and say a prayer with me. It's easy to be friends when the lights are bright, but how is your love when there's none of that? I know how Mariah's is.

She has the ability to be sexy, but not so much that you think it's getting too crazy. It's a sexy classiness. The whole thing with her song Touch My Body is that she keeps it acceptable and has fun with it. And Mariah didn't break all those sales records just because she's beautiful. She has perseverance and consistency. You need the two: the ability to keep going and the ability to keep doing the right thing. She once said that every time she makes a new record, she feels as if she's brand-new again, like a young person looking at a computer for the first time. By doing it and not thinking about it, she lets the magic come.

When people talk about the great influential singers, they talk about Aretha, Whitney and Mariah. That's a testament to her talent. Her range is that amazing.

I look forward to the time the two of us can do a song together. I'm rewriting a song for her. It's going to be a tribute to my mother.

MARIAH BEATS MADONNA

The war is over and there's a new queen of pop: Miss Mariah Carey. How do we know? Hitsdailydouble.com is reporting that estimated first week sales for Madonna's Hard Candy album will range between 275,000-300,000. Mariah's "E=MC2" sold 475,000 in its first week and was Carey's biggest debut ever.

In addition to that, Madonna's numbers are a slide downwards from her last album, "Confessions on a Dance Floor," which 350,000 copies its first week out and went on to sell 1.7 million copies in the U.S. That was three years ago.

So what happened? Kabbalah and Malawi didn't help, neither did dependence on Justin Timberlake singing like Michael Jackson on the debut single, "4 Minutes to Save the World". Madonna is also hobbled by the Warner M. Group's broken marketing machine and the company's sinking stock. It's a good bet that Wall Street analysts will be asking about "Hard Candy" on next week's conference call with Bronfman and Cohen.

Madonna will keep pumping "Hard Candy" tonight at 10 p.m. with a six song set at the Roseland Ballroom that may feature a whooping Timberlake and the 50-year-old singer wearing leather chain mail. If it's anything like her Roseland performance several years ago, though, on Monday, November 6, 2000, I wrote that night: that stars like Gwyneth Paltrow, Madonna's pal Rupert Everett, Rolling Stone publisher Jann Wenner with his boyfriend, Matt Nye and actor John Leguizamo were all there, but the hoi polloi dressed like a Rocky Horror Halloween.

There were a lot of rhinestones and cowboy hats. There were also drag queens of every size and shape, boys in dresses, the whole thing. No one would have been surprised to see deceased Studio 54 owner Steve Rubell rise from the dead.

The show that night lasted 20 minutes. There were almost no live instruments used except in a semi-acoustic "Don't Tell Me", which had a cadre of cowgirl violinists and was the best number of the five. Otherwise, it was all deadly pre-recorded synthesizer. As one security guard said, "Four days work, and it was just 20 minutes?"

The show had a forced feeling. There was no spontaneity. And if Madonna really cared for those thousands of fans who'd been hanging around for three hours, a couple of her hits wouldn't have been so hard to perform. We'll see how different tonight's show is...
