SPECIAL MESSAGE FROM MARIAH ABOUT FROM HUNGER TO HOPE
Dear lambs, I am so grateful for my life and for everything that I have.
Over the years I have been passionate about helping those who are less fortunate, especially children in need.
It is shocking that 850 million people face hunger every day. But it pains me even more to know that every six seconds, somewhere in the world, a child dies of hunger. This is unacceptable. Let us commit ourselves today to make a difference and help end hunger around the world.
Join me in support of the World Hunger Relief campaign to benefit the United Nations World Food Programme. Together we will help feed millions of children. Give children the chance they deserve and give to the World Food Programme. Just $1 will feed 4 children.
To donate and join the movement to end world hunger, visit www.fromhungertohope.com. Together we can help significantly in bridging the gap between hunger and hope. Mariah Carey

TOP 15 ALBUM ACTS OF THE BAR-CODED ERA, MARIAH AT #3
These are the 15 artists who have sold the most albums since May 25, 1991. The tallies don't count any albums sold before that date. Nielsen/SoundScan also maintains a running list of the top 200 albums in its history. Also included are the total number of albums each of these artists has on that list, as well as the title of the artist's highest-ranking album.
1. Garth Brooks, 68,051,000 2. The Beatles, 56,683,000
3. Mariah Carey, 51,370,000. Carey is the top-ranking female artist on the list. The pop/R&B star is also the only artist in the top 15 with an R&B base. Carey has five albums in the top 200, topped by 1995's Daydream at #47. Carey first charted in June 1990 with her eponymous debut album. In addition to her album achievements, Carey has two songs-"Touch My Body" and "We Belong Together"-on Nielsen/SoundScan's running list of the top 200 songs with the most paid downloads.
Mariah Carey's official website has clarified some rumors about Island Def Jam giving up! Today, the official newsletter has announced that there is indeed a new single coming soon!
The message reads, "Get ready! After the huge success of 'I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time,' MariahCarey.com is gearing up to announce the next single off of E=MC2. Keep checking back with MariahCarey.com for news on the latest single."
Billboard magazine and Amazon confirmed that "Migrate" would be released on September 30; however, an inquiry made to Mariah's label, according to Mariah Daily Journal, claimed the release of "Migrate" in 12" Vinyl had been cancelled and "no new Mariah vinyl singles will be forthcoming in the US." The same fan site announced that, according to the biggest radio industry information source (All Access), "I Stay In Love" is scheduled to go for adds at Top 40/Mainstream radio on Tuesday, October 21st.
Previously the same sources had announced "I'm That Chick" would hit radio stations on September 2. "Migrate," "I Stay In Love," and "I'm That Chick" are possible choices. Hopefully, the decision will turn out to be the best for Mariah and her album. (Mariah Carey.com | Mariah Daily Journal)

OPRAH DENIES MC PREGNANCY ANNOUNCEMENT
OPRAH WINFREY has dismissed reports MARIAH CAREY has cancelled an appearance on her U.S. chat show on Friday (26Sep08), when she was allegedly set to announce she is pregnant.
The pop singer was rumoured to have booked an appearance on the show to share the news that she is expecting her first child with husband Nick Cannon, according to internet reports.
But a representative from Winfrey's production company, Harpo, insists there are no scheduled plans to have Carey on the show either now or in the immediate future.
Meanwhile, Carey's spokesperson has shot down claims the star is pregnant - a rumour she that has plagued her since exchanging vows with Cannon in April (08) after a whirlwind romance.

MARIAH CAREY BECOMES GLOBAL HUNGER AMBASSADOR
Mariah Carey is lending her voice to help out those in need. The singer has signed on as the Global Hunger Ambassador for the Yum! Foundation's World Hunger Relief campaign and she'll be using her music to help out the cause.
Beginning tomorrow, Thursday September 25, Mariah is encouraging people around the world to pick up a coded card at any of Yum's 36,000 restaurants, which include KFC, Pizza Hut, Taco Bell, Long John Silver's and A&W. The card will allow fans to download her song, "Love Story", off her latest album, "E=MC2", at www.FromHungerToHope.com. For every download, Yum will donate $.25 to the Hunger Relief campaign, which helps raise money for the United Nation's World Food Program.
In related Mimi news, according to the NY Daily News, Mariah is heading back to the movies. She is developing a big screen musical based on her holiday album, "Merry Christmas". "Since I recorded the Christmas album, I've always wanted to make a movie to go with it, something that people could watch and hear and enjoy every year," Mariah told the NY Daily News. "I'm into it. I'm all about the holiday season."
The plot centers around a developer who wants to turn a small town into a shopping center. "Mariah doesn't want to let that happen," her producing partner Benny Medina told the paper. "Her character uses song and love to keep the Christmas spirit alive." "High School Musical" writer Peter Barsocchini is reportedly penning the script. (Access Hollywood)

WILL MARIAH CAREY LIFT MOOD OF INVESTORS IN CHINESE STOCKS?
At the CLSA Investor Forum in Hong Kong there haven't been a lot of backslapping and hi-fives, which isn't surprising considering the headlines these days. But as one CLSA staffer said to me, the mood was pretty upbeat, considering the circumstances, probably because the attendees are still happy to have jobs. Or maybe misery loves company. Who knows, maybe they showed up to catch a private performance by Mariah Carey at the conference bash on September 25.
But after sitting through four straight media briefings on China today, I think it would take more than hearing Carey croon her new hit "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" to lift the spirits of investors in Chinese stocks. Fraser Howie, a CLSA managing director who introduced himself as "a notorious bear of China" said "even I've been impressed with how quickly the market has fallen and how confidence has evaporated." For those of you not tethered to Bloomberg machines, the Shanghai Stock Index is down about 58% this year. (Business Week)

JACKO TURNED DOWN AGAIN
Quincy Jones is not going to help Michael Jackson make a new album. The legendary producer of "Thriller" and "Bad", Jackson's two most successful collections, tells me he's concentrating on a big tribute collection set for next spring. About two dozen hip and R&B stars are recording Jones' songs for the compilation.
"We're trying to set up something for Mariah Carey now," said Q, who was one of the several prominent guests Tuesday night at an all-star fundraiser for Tony Bennett and wife Susan's Exploring the Arts Foundation. (Fox411 | The Mariah Carey Archives)

MARIAH CAREY MAKES NEW "PUSH" INTO ACTING
Mariah Carey is determined to shut up all you people who laughed at her in "Glitter". The Grammy winner put away her lip gloss to play the battered wife of a state trooper in "Tennessee", which won raves at the Tribeca Film Festival. Director Lee Daniels was so impressed with her grit that he's cast her in "Push", in which she plays a Harlem social worker ministering to an obese, HIV-positive woman impregnated twice by her father.
But Mariah isn't getting mired in misery. As she gets ready to tour again, she's also developing a movie musical based on her colossal-selling Christmas album. It's about a town outside a city - perhaps not unlike Mariah's hometown of Huntington, L.I. - where a ruthless developer wants to turn it into one big mall.
"Mariah doesn't want to let that happen," says her producing partner Benny Medina. "Her character uses song and love to keep the Christmas spirit alive." Mariah says the script, which "High School Musical" writer Peter Barsocchini is working on, is still in the early stages. But she tells us, "Since I recorded the Christmas album, I've always wanted to make a movie to go with it, something that people could watch and hear and enjoy every year. I'm into it. I'm all about the holiday season." (New York Daily News)

MC SAVES THE WORLD, ONE CHALUPA AT A TIME
Mariah Carey is making a run for the border...for a good cause.
The Grammy winner has signed on as the latest Hunger Ambassador for the Yum! Foundation's World Hunger Relief, an annual effort that aims to raise money for the United Nations World Food Program and bring an end to starvation around the world.
Her duties include becoming the actual poster child for the cause, appearing on print ads that will be featured in more than 100 countries and 36,000 franchises.
"The change from hunger to hope starts with you," Carey's poster reads.
Wannabe donors can contribute to the cause at any of the Yum! Brands restaurants, including Taco Bell, KFC, Pizza Hut, Long John Silver's and A&W Restaurants.
In exchange for a donation, charitable customers will receive a special free download of the song "Love Story" from Carey's latest album, E=MC2.
Last year marked the first annual World Hunger Relief Week and raised roughly $16 million for the cause. (E!Online)

MC STAR IN XMAS MOVIE
New York, NY (CNS) - It's "tis the season" for singer Mariah Carey, who has recorded a Christmas album, and is now starring in a Christmas movie.
Celebrity News Service has learned all the holiday glitter is fine with Carey, who said that after recording a Christmas album she always wanted to make a holiday movie.
The New York Daily News is reporting that Carey is due to star in a musical film about a town whose future is in question, when real estate developers want to demolish it.
Carey, who will also soon star as a battered wife in "Tennessee," first debuted as an actress with her movie "Glitter." The movie did not get good reviews.
The Daily News said the singer is hoping to make up for her 2001 screenplay by starring in the Christmas musical. "Since I recorded the Christmas album, I've always wanted to make a movie to go with it, something that people could watch and hear and enjoy every year," she said.
"I'm into it," adds Mariah, "I'm all about the holiday season." (AllHeadlineNews)

Q&A FROM URBANWORLD TENNESSEE SCREENING
Two fans had the chance to ask Mariah questions about her work in the new Lee Daniels film Tennessee at the UrbanWorld Film Festival. Check out the questions and Mariah's responses below.
How was it trying it to get into character, the whole process of creating the song, and writing a song through a character who had gone through so much traumatic stuff?
MC: Thank you for the question. The process was very different than writing for myself because it was obviously part of the script. So I tried to go into the mindset of what Krystal was going through and trying to to, again, serve the script, and do my best.
Did you learn anything about yourself while filming this movie?
MC: I was blessed to be working with the wonderful people that I worked with and to have someone like Lee to take me under his wing and allow me to grow as an artist. Really, just not to be put into one category and explore more of who I am. I guess if I had to pick just one thing out of the many things that I learned it's that I'm capable of learning more than I thought because I had Lee's input. So, thank you for the question. MC RETURNS TO THE BIG SCREEN
Mariah Carey shocked and nauseated the world with Glitter, the singer's simply atrocious 2001 big screen flop.
While one would think the 38-year would be inclined to stay away from the movie business, Ms. Carey's picked herself up and thrown herself back into acting. And apparently she doesn't suck:
The Grammy winner put away her lip gloss to play the battered wife of a state trooper in "Tennessee," which won raves at the Tribeca Film Festival. Director Lee Daniels was so impressed with her grit that he's cast her in "Push," in which she plays a Harlem social worker ministering to an obese, HIV-positive woman impregnated twice by her father.
Carey's also reportedly working on a musical set to her Christmas album. The story will revolve around an evil developer looking to build a mall in a small town. Sounds perfect. (Queerty)

ARETHA FRANKLIN HAS FUN WITH MC'S "TOUCH MY BODY" AT HOOSIER PARK
The Queen of Soul reigned Saturday night at Hoosier Park.
Aretha Franklin treated thousands of loyal subjects to two hours of hits. She wasted no time getting to the biggies, kicking off the show with “Respect.” She sang about it and she got it. From the band. From the audience.
Next up was “(You Make Me Feel Like A) Natural Woman,” during which she offered a few well placed vocal runs.
Behind her, the stage was packed. There were four backup singers and her traveling band, as well as a horn section and some percussionists tapped locally. And during a few tunes, she was joined by a pair of female dancers that, although unnecessary, offered a little Vegas-type glitz.
The sound was tight; even Franklin herself noted that everyone was “on.”
That includes the diva herself. Her voice might not be as dynamic as it was, and she might hold back a little more than she used to, but she can still deliver.
What she delivered were stops all over her career timeline. There was blues. There was jazz. There was soul. There was even Mariah Carey. Franklin had fun with Carey’s “Touch My Body.”
“You throw me on the floor and there’s gonna be some trouble,” Franklin, dressed in a long maroon and gold kaftan, joked after stopping the song mid-verse.
She tore up “Think.” She squeezed every ounce of soul out of “Ain’t No Way.”
And then she waved good-bye. After nearly an hour, Franklin left the stage (but not before mouthing the words “I’ll be right back”) and welcomed a trio of vocalists (one was her son Eddie) to center stage to perform “I’ll Be Around.” And speaking of family, her band included another son, Teddy, on guitar, and a cousin on background vocals.
During the second half of her set, she sipped hot tea, told a story about Muhammad Ali, took a turn at the piano and offered up a little opera (revisiting her Grammy performance of “Nessun Dorma”).
Let’s face it, Franklin can sing the heck out of song, any song. But when she decides to take the audience to church, well, she takes it to another level. That’s what happened when she performed “One Night with a King.” She was, simply, electrifying.
It was easy to forget you were in front of an outdoor stage wedged between a horse track and the casino.
Instead, we were on Franklin’s “Freeway of Love” with the top down and the hits cranked, enjoying every minute of the ride.

ON A CLEAR CHART, YOU CAN SEE 'FOREVER'
Hi Fred, Thanks for all the cool trivia and answers you provide every week. It’s great to live in 2008 and have an expert as accessible as you!
Chris Brown’s “Forever” debuted at No. 9 several weeks ago, and I don’t recall it dropping out of the top 10 during its run. I know there have been some singles that have spent their first 19 weeks in the top 10 — Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day” debuted at No. 1 and spent at least 16 weeks in that spot in 1995-1996, so I’m guessing it was in the top 10 for the first 19 weeks of its run.
My question is, when was the last time a song debuted in the top 10 and spent its first 19 weeks in that tier?
Thanks! Chris Bubenik
Dear Chris,Glad you enjoy Chart Beat and Chart Beat Chat!
Chris Brown’s “Forever” is holding at No. 4 in its 20th chart week, but the song hasn’t been in the top 10 every week since its debut at No. 9 on the Hot 100 on May 10. In fact, in its second week the single fell to No. 15 and then plunged to No. 25 before rebounding to No. 20.
“Forever” returned to the top 10 in its eighth chart week and has been there ever since, for a total of 14 weeks in the top 10. Many of the songs that have debuted in the top 10 recently have had short stays in that elite tier. The longest top 10 stay for a recent debut is credited to Avril Lavigne. “Girlfriend” debuted at No. 5 the week of March 17 and remained in the top 10 for 18 weeks.
Even though “Forever” hasn’t hit the 19-week mark yet - and it still could - I do have an answer to your question. The last song to debut in the top 10 and remain there for at least 19 weeks was Toni Braxton’s “You’re Makin’ Me High” / “Let It Flow.” That two-sided hit spent 20 weeks in the top 10 from June to October of 1996. And to satisfy your curiosity about Mariah Carey and Boyz II Men’s “One Sweet Day,” that No. 1 hit spent 19 weeks in the top 10. (Ask Billboard)

MARIAH CAREY ON PEOPLE MAGAZINE'S WORST DRESSED LIST
Not everyone’s style was a hit this year. Mariah Carey’s “daring” choices - shorter-than-short shorts, skin-tight dresses and platforms - earned her a spot on the magazine’s Worst Dressed list. For the umpteenth time.
More details on the annual list can be found in People’s Best & Worst Dressed 2008 issue, on stands Friday. (New York Daily News)

A TOTAL END OF AN ERA IN POP VIDEOS
"Total Request Live" is going off the air after a decade, and all we can think about is Mariah Carey.
Flashback, summer of 2001: A glassy-eyed Carey unexpectedly wanders onto the set and begins to wriggle out of her T-shirt. "All I know is, I want one day off when I can go swimming and look at rainbows and, like, eat ice cream," she says dreamily, as host Carson Daly's chuckles grow increasingly panicked. "And maybe, like, learn to ride a bicycle."
Insta-classic. Try to find anyone age 18 to 29 who does not remember that moment.
So when MTV announced this week that "TRL" -- as it's been known since the brand pulled a KFC back in 1999 -- would broadcast its last fizzy countdown show in November, it felt like the end of . . . something.
Not that the show, which premiered in 1998, was ever that great. Formatwise, it's uber-low-concept: Bunch of high-pitched teens pile into a Times Square studio and watch the day's top music videos, emceed at first by Daly, later by a parade of lesser-known VJs. Occasionally an "it" boy or girl of the current music scene drops in for a chat and to pump a new release. Like a museum exhibit on the evolution of the boy band, the groups changed -- Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync, Jonas Brothers -- but the giddiness of fans jostling in line outside 1515 Broadway, that stayed the same.
But at least there's the music. Which, okay, isn't that great, either. The featured videos, democratically selected by Web votes, are generally arguments for musical dictatorships. Think: "I Want It That Way" on endless repeat through most of 1999. Producers eventually instituted a "retirement home," where such songs as "Pretty Fly (For a White Guy)" could rest up for a while, get a break from rotation.
But the music -- at least it's there. The very presence of music on MTV has become a novelty, as the rest of the station's lineup degenerates into back-to-back "Real World" spinoffs. "TRL," that sentimental fossil, was one of the few remaining blocks of time in which people actually played guitars and sang.
Question: Can a "TRL"-less MTV even justify hosting the MTV Video Music Awards anymore? That "TRL" managed to hang on as long as it did is more surprising than the news that it's being canceled.
In the past few years, the whole concept of voter-generated countdown shows has started to feel extraneous. With the on-demand availability of YouTube, why waste time voting again and again and again for your faves at MTV.com? Why not just watch "I Want It That Way" 57 times in a row online, retirement home be darned? What if we want it that way?
Still, there was something nice about how "TRL" taught us about patience -- waiting, with fingers crossed, to see whether our wish-list video would make the show. Waiting, with fingers crossed, to see whether Mariah might show up again and what she might remove this time. The end of "TRL" is not the day that music died. But it's kind of like the day that music television died. Without "TRL," MTV is pretty much just...TV. (Washington Post)

MARIAH CAREY A SELF-CONFESSED BIBLE BOOKWORM
Mariah Carey says the only book she has ever read is the Bible. The ‘Touch My Body’ singer — who married singer Nick Cannon earlier this year — admits she rarely has time to sit down and read, but always ensures she has time to read the holy book.
She said: “The only book I make time to read is the Bible.” Carey can’t even find the time to read when she is on holiday because she is too busy swimming and sunbathing.
She added to Now magazine: “I don’t get much time off, but I make sure there are periods on my schedule when no work is allowed. The best way is to go on vacation. I love tropical places and swimming in the sea. The most secluded a place is, the better.”
It was recently revealed Carey is trying to stop a tell-all book about her from being published. The singer is said to be so concerned by revelations set to appear in a new tome written by her former record producer Damion ‘Damizza’ Young, that she is desperate to prevent it going to print.
Young has announced he intends to reveal his “intense four-year personal relationship” with the star in ‘Guilty by Association.’ However, the 38-year-old songstress has ordered her lawyer Sonya Guardo to write a letter to the music mogul, reminding him of the confidentiality agreement he signed which prevents him from legally revealing any sensitive information about her. MARIAH'S DONE
Mariah Carey has squeezed all the juice out of her most recent album, E=MC2. As we mentioned last month, E=MC2 "only" sold about a million copies, as opposed to the millions and millions and millions her previous album, The Emancipation of Mimi, sold.
E=MC2 has already released 3 of its singles, though we can't even name one besides Touch My Body. The next single was said to be Migrate. But, according to reports, the release of Migrate, which was supposed to come out on September 30th, has been canceled. Luckily for everyone, it seems there might not be any further singles. Time to work on some new material, girl. (Fashion.ie | The Mariah Carey Archives)

MARIAH CAREY AIMS FOR THEATRICAL REDEMPTION
Ready for redemption after her box-office flop "Glitter" seemingly ended her theatrical career seven years ago, Mariah Carey was arm-in-arm with husband Nick Cannon at the 2008 Urban World Film Festival on Friday night. GUILTY BY ASSOCIATION REVEALS "INTENSE" LOVE?
Mariah Carey is not a happy camper right now - because her former producer, Damion "Damizza" Young, is planning to release a tell-all about their "intense" relationship. Mariah Carey is doing everything in her power to halt the book's publishing and release, having her lawyer remind Damizza that he signed a confidentiality agreement.
Damizza's book, "Guilty by Association", is said to be about his and Mariah's "intense four-year personal relationship they shared and worked diligently to disguise from the world's press." In all fairness, what is Mariah worried about? Did she have sex with Damizza and not want anyone to know? Were they "in love" during this "intense, personal" relationship? Who knows.

CINEMA RELEASE FOR MARIAH MOVIE
US pop star Mariah Carey's latest film will be released in December, seven years after her disastrous first movie, Glitter, was widely panned by critics. The singer's latest film, a road trip drama called Tennessee, had its premiere at this spring's Tribeca Film Festival in New York. Carey plays a waitress whose dreams of a singing career have been dashed by a bad marriage. Adam Rothenberg and Ethan Peck also star in the film.
The BBC's Mark Savage, who watched the film at the Cannes Film Festival where it was previewed, said: "Amazingly, Mariah is the best thing in it." He added: "Carey is so good, in fact, that the film feels rather flat when she's off-screen."
Aaron Woodley, from Time Out New York magazine, said of the film: "Carey is surprisingly subdued here. She mostly keeps her celebrity complex at bay, allowing her to effectively embody her level headed Southern-gal character."
Although the movie is not a musical, it is does feature Carey singing the ballad Right to Dream, which she co-wrote with Willie Nelson. Glitter earned just $4.3 million (£2.4 million) at the North American box office when it was released in 2001. Carey appeared as herself in this summer's comedy You Don't Mess with the Zohan. MARIAH CAREY ROCKS CANADIAN IDOL
Here in the States, we love our American Idol. And just to our north, the Canadians were celebrating their Canadian Idol season finale with a little help from one of America's favorite singers - Mariah Carey. The "Touch My Body" babe looked amazing as she took the stage, sporting a sexy sparkling black minidress teamed with a pair of stiletto high heels. She sang her disco-esque hit "I'm that Chick" as well as her classic "We Belong Together".
And at the end of the night, Alberta student Theo Tams was named the new Canadian Idol. The big-voiced, grand piano-playing crooner was moved to tears when his name was announced, and he gave a very gracious acceptance speech.
"First of all, I just want to say thanks to Mitch (MacDonald, the other finalist). He's a great guy, he's become a great friend and I'm going to be first in line to buy his record. Thanks so much. (Gossip Girls)

MEET YOUR NEW CANADIAN IDOL
Theo Tams showed he had both the hat and the cattle Wednesday night, as the Lethbridge, Alta., pianist-singer won Canadian Idol season six. Fighting back tears, an emotional Tams could barely get out a thank you to his fans after host Ben Mulroney announced his win. Surrounded at the piano by the Top 10 Idol finalists, Tams sang his winning single Sing, to be released across Canada on Thursday.
The musician beat out Mitch MacDonald of Port Hood, N.S., in a battle of contrasting styles. The winner's big voice and big performances beat out MacDonald's tender, mostly acoustic renderings. Almost five million votes decided Tams to be the winner.
The season six finale was a star-studded affair. Pop diva Mariah Carey gave a glitzy performance of her hit I'm That Chick from her new album EMC2. Asked what advice she had for each of the Idol finalists, Carey said "keep believing in yourself". John Legend sang his single Green Light from his soon-to-be released album Evolver. Mariah Carey wants to quash parts of an explosive tell-all being penned by her former record producer Damion "Damizza" Young, who says he'll bare details of the "intense four-year personal relationship" they shared and "worked diligently to disguise from the world's press".
Young tell us the songbird's lawyer Sonya Guardo, who works with powerhouse celebrity attorney Allen Grubman, fired off a letter reminding him of a confidentiality agreement to steer clear of blabbing any sensitive information about Carey in his upcoming book, "Guilty by Association". BILLBOARD CELEBRATES 50 YEARS OF THE HOT 100
Fifty years ago, in the Aug. 4, 1958, issue, Billboard launched a revolutionary chart called the Hot 100. After nearly two decades of tracking songs distinctively by sales or plays (on jukeboxes and at radio), the Hot 100 was the first list to measure popularity by incorporating both radio play and sales. Scoring the chart's inaugural No. 1 was Ricky Nelson with "Poor Little Fool." Billboard.com is celebrating this milestone in a big way, as we post all kinds of Hot 100-based charts each week leading up the September unveiling of our special All-Time Hot 100 chart and the commemorative Hot 100 Anniversary issue of Billboard Magazine.
Mariah Carey has definitely left an unparalleled legacy. Mariah Carey leads the most weeks at No. 1 by an artist with 79 weeks, followed by The Beatles with 59. She is also the solo artist with the most No. 1s by an artist (18) and the second overall, only surpassed by The Beatles. Mariah also made it to the top ten, considered one of the top artists during the Hot 100 era. Furthermore, Mariah’s collaboration with Boys II Men, “One Sweet Day,” remains as the song with the most weeks at No 1 (16), closely followed by Mariah’s 2005 hit “We Belong Together.” The latter is also considered the 9th all-time hot 100 top song and the 2nd all-time top R&B/Hip-Hop song.
Billboard describes the importance of “We Belong Together” in popular music and in Mariah’s career. “After 15 No. 1 songs, Mariah Carey signed an $80 million contract with Virgin and then proceeded to infamously lose her cool during a bizarre 2001 taping of MTV's "TRL" and star in flop film "Glitter." But Carey managed to regroup after her early-'00s rough patch. In 2005, the songstress released comeback album "The Emancipation of Mimi" via her new label, Island Records. The Jermaine Dupri-produced "We Belong Together" was a monster single that sat at No. 1 on the Hot 100 for 14 weeks and helped "Mimi" go on to sell 5.9 million copies, according to Nielsen SoundScan. Since "Together," Carey has returned to No. 1 two additional times for a total of 18 No. 1 Hot 100 singles. Her sum is second only to the Beatles' 20 No. 1 hits.” (Billboard)

WE BELONG TOGETHER, 9TH MOST POPULAR SONG OF HOT 100 ERA
How's this for a twist: Of all the No. 1 songs in the 50 years of the Billboard Hot 100 chart, Chubby Checker's "The Twist" ranks as the most popular single.
Santana's "Smooth," featuring Rob Thomas, is the No. 2 most popular, followed by Bobby Darin's "Mack the Knife," Leann Rimes' "How Do I Live" and "The Macarena" by Los Del Rio.
The Beatles did make the top 10, coming it at No. 8 with "Hey Jude." But Olivia Newton-John's "Physical" and Debby Boone's "You Light Up My Life" are ahead of that hit. Rounding out the top 10: Mariah Carey's "We Belong Together" at No. 9 and Toni Braxton's "Un-break My Heart" at No. 10.
Geoff Mayfield, director of charts at Billboard magazine, acknowledged that the list might not jibe with some fans' personal thoughts of the most popular songs of the past 50 years. "This is simply a chronicle of how each of these songs performed in their era on the Hot 100. We're not saying these are the most memorable songs of your life. That would be something that's almost impossible to determine," said Mayfield. "Everyone has a subjective frame of reference."
The Billboard Hot 100 chart measures airplay and sales information (and more recently digital downloads) in determining the nation's most popular songs. To determine the most popular song of the Hot 100 era, Billboard used a formula to determine the top song - not always relying on weeks at No. 1 since the data was reported differently in its early days.
Initially, Billboard relied on stations to report the most popular songs, and got sales surveys from record stores. But Mayfield said stations often stopped reporting on a song's popularity if it was no longer a priority for record labels. And in 1991, Billboard began relying on sales data from Nielsen SoundScan and airplay data from Nielsen Broadcast Data Systems. So Billboard weighted certain songs from different eras to make sure all songs were on an even playing field. (Associated Press)

STAND UP TO CANCER TELETHON TAKES OVER NETWORK TV
Three TV networks, cancer research advocates and more than 60 celebrities from music, sports, TV and film made history Friday night with a live telethon that aired simultaneously on NBC, ABC and CBS. Jack Black, Jennifer Aniston, Halle Berry and Keanu Reeves — along with presidential nominees John McCain and Barack Obama — were among the stars participating in "Stand Up to Cancer," an hourlong, commercial-free fundraising show spearheaded by entertainment-industry heavyweights whose lives have been touched by the disease.
"This is an absolutely historic night, thanks to the unbelievable generosity of the three networks," producer and cancer survivor Laura Ziskin told the audience at the Kodak Theatre before the show began. "We hope we're going to make you laugh, and I know we're going to make you cry, so I have some party favors," she said as she tossed packets of Kleenex into the crowd.
Cancer survivors Lance Armstrong and Elizabeth Edwards kicked off the program with statistics: Cancer kills 550,000 Americans and six million people worldwide each year. "That's the equivalent of 9/11 every two days," Armstrong said. Patrick Swayze, Billy Crystal, Salma Hayek and Christina Applegate urged viewers to call in and donate, while Neil Patrick Harris, America Ferrera, Christina Ricci and Kirsten Dunst answered phones. A visibly pregnant Jennifer Garner, along with Berry, Forest Whitaker and Casey Affleck, read personal accounts from those battling cancer.
Network news anchors Katie Couric, Charles Gibson and Brian Williams emceed the program, discussing advances in research and telling heartwrenching tales of those struggling with the disease. Black provided a dose of comic relief: "I usually watch these things at home in my underwear," he said, adding that the celebrities answering phones may have some of the fattest pockets around.
"I'm going to make these gravy-trainers pony up," he said. "Who's got Spielberg's number? He's got a lot of dough." Brad Garrett, who underwent a prostate exam on the show, said, "I can't believe that Fox is counterprogramming against this." Charles Barkley shared his colonoscopy with viewers. The worst part of the experience? Fasting. "I'm a fat guy. I don't like to go the whole day without eating," the basketball star said.
The show featured musical performances by James Taylor and Sheryl Crow, Josh Groban and Monica Mancini, Melissa Etheridge with Sugarland, BeBe Winans and Jason Mraz. It also featured a performance by more than a dozen divas — including Beyonce, Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige and Rihanna — who sang their new charity song, "Just Stand Up," via video from the Fashion Rocks show in New York.
Aniston helped close the program with a nod to Hollywood. "In our world, the boy gets the girl, the hero defeats the villain and cancer is no more," she said. Skateboarder Tony Hawk, who lost his father to lung cancer 15 years ago and a close friend to a brain tumor last month, said he was just happy to participate. "I'm here doing whatever they ask of me," he told reporters before the telethon began. "As long as I don't have to sing or dance, it's all good."
Ziskin, one of the event's organizers, has fought cancer since 2004. After seeing what "An Inconvenient Truth" did for environmental awareness, she wanted to make a documentary about cancer. But instead she teamed up with Couric, Sherry Lansing and other cancer community activists to put on the live telethon.
"Cancer is not in the closet anymore, and now that it's out of the closet we have to motivate the public to demand that as a country we do better," she said. "And if the country won't do it, we'll do it. We'll raise money ourselves and try to spend that money in a way that will lead to better, less toxic treatments that we can get to patients more quickly." The aim of Stand Up to Cancer is to raise funds for "translational research," Ziskin said, which encourages scientists to collaborate rather than compete, translating basic science into applicable therapies for patients. She compared the approach to the Manhattan project.
"We took the best and brightest and locked them up in Los Alamos and said you can't leave until you split the atom and create, unfortunately, a bomb," Ziskin said. "This is no less a problem, with half a million Americans a year dying from this disease. If we take best and brightest, encourage them and reward them for working together, the answers will come much more quickly."
NATASHA BEDINGFIELD STAR-STRUCK BY BEYONCE & MARIAH
Natasha Bedingfield may be selling out seats with her tour buddies New Kids on the Block, but she couldn't contain her excitement about her upcoming performance with fellow singers Mariah Carey and Beyoncé Knowles.
"I'm so giddy,” the British pop star told PEOPLE at the Kohl's-sponsored Fashion Rocks pre-party in New York, just after she had finished rehearsing the song for Stand Up to Cancer.
Bedingfield, who recorded the charity tune, "Just Stand Up" with Beyoncé, Mariah, Fergie, Mary J. Blige and 10 other pop vocalists, also admitted that she was expecting more diva attitudes from her collaborators.
"I thought maybe there'd be some fireworks, but actually everyone is just so motivated by the cause. They were all just so obliging and nice," she said. "It's actually really nice to hang out with girls in the same career." (People.com)

TOP NOTE: MARIAH CAREY
Mariah Carey is a woman of extremes. There have been highs — most consistently, her five-octave voice, which pierces the whistle register — and lows, such as her much chronicled meltdown, which included a bizarre striptease on TRL in 2001. But, now, after 18 years on the charts, Carey, 38, is way up at the top of her game, where she reigns as the bestselling female recording artist of all time.
“I always knew what I wanted to do with my life,” Carey recently told WWD. “My mother was an opera singer, and I’d been singing since I started talking and writing songs since I was 13.” And she’s only gotten better with time. Add this to Carey’s list of superlatives: She’s written more number-one songs — “Touch My Body” off her latest album, “E=MC2,” brought her total to 18 — than any other female producer and composer. Only the Beatles have had more number-one hits.
Of course, Carey has been known to show off assets aside from her voice — including her two fragrances with Elizabeth Arden. Her proclivity for less-is-more fashion — hemlines as high as her notes — borders on exhibitionism and just might trigger another creative outlet in design. “I love lingerie,” said Carey. “I’ve been looking at doing something with that — but that’s a whole different story.”
Carey’s first fragrance, M by Mariah Carey, was launched in September 2007 and climbed to the top of the sales charts. Her latest, Luscious Pink, is intended to show fans a more intimate look into her world and has just hit store shelves. “This scent is feminine, flirtatious and fun, and truly reflects where I am in my life now, after an incredible year,” Carey told WWD in June (just weeks after marrying rapper-actor Nick Cannon). NICK CANNON WANTS TO WORK WITH MARIAH CAREY AGAIN
Nick Cannon is ready to mix business with pleasure - but only if his wife, Mariah Carey, agrees. "Of course I would work with her!" Nick tells In Touch, but adds, "I am going to leave it up to her." In the meantime, he's keeping busy with his solo projects. "I've been working on some other stuff, so I don't think we'll do a record soon," says Nick, 27.
Of course, their past job together turned out nicely for the couple - they fell in love shortly after he starred in Mariah's music video for "Bye Bye". Something else they could do together? Nick says that he wouldn't mind having kids soon. "That would be a beautiful thing," he says. It was love at first sight when Nick and Mariah, 39, met in Antigua to shoot her video in March.

MORE WAYS TO WRIGGLE OUT OF A RECORD DEAL
If you're desperate to escape a suffocating contract but can't use the California Labor Law, these ingenious deal breakers should do the trick...
Suffer a physical and emotional breakdown
Like Mariah Carey did only months after signing a record deal with EMI's Virgin Records for a reported $80m. After releasing an album (Glitter) that was less than successful by her standards, (not to mention the movie of Glitter) the label decided that it was more economically viable to buy her contract out for $28m - only a year after it was originally signed - than to keep her on the roster. She went on to sign with Island/Def Jam that same year for $20m, and has since released some of her most successful albums to date.

"Conde Nast Media Group has been a tremendous champion for Stand Up To Cancer."
"Our goal with this initiative and TV show is to 'tip' the conversation in this country about cancer - to get people riled up, so they want to do something about the fact that it still takes so many lives," Laura Ziskin, Stand Up To Cancer Executive Producer of the September 5 television special and a cancer survivor. "We are grateful to L.A. Reid, Kenny Edmonds and the performers for donating their talent to our cause, and I can't think of a more perfect venue then Fashion Rocks to showcase this amazing song which only helps further our momentum to fight cancer as never before."
"Just Stand Up", conceived by Antonio "L.A." Reid, Chairman, Island Def Jam Music Group, and produced by L.A. and Kenny "Babyface" Edmonds, will be released to radio and will be available to purchase at iTunes and mobile carriers worldwide. (Yahoo)

WILL MARIAH CAREY OR RIHANNA WIN THE MTV VMA FOR BEST FEMALE VIDEO?
Our two music kudos gurus are split over who’ll win best female video at the MTV Video Music Awards on Sunday night. David “Guru” Schnelwar ranks Mariah Carey in top place. Darrin “DoubleD” Dortch ranks Mariah Carey last, opting instead of Rihanna as likely champ. David has Rihanna in second place.
Best Female Video: Doubled's ranking: 1) Rihanna, “Take a Bow” 2) Britney Spears, “Piece of Me” 3) Katy Perry, “I Kissed a Girl” 4) Jordin Sparks, “No Air” 5) Mariah Carey, “Touch My Body”
You can immediately eliminate Mariah. Her buzz has faded and her follow-up singles have underperformed on the charts; she won’t win. “American Idol” alums don’t have a great track record at the VMAs, and Jordin Sparks’ momentum didn’t continue after the massive success of “No Air,” so I think she’s out, too.
Katy Perry is a dark horse. “I Kissed a Girl” is the No. 1 song of the summer; it spent seven consecutive weeks on top of the Hot 100 chart and is still in the Top 5. If Perry’s follow-up single catches heat during voting, then I think she will win. If not, voters will reward Rihanna for her massive year. She’s on her third No. 1 single from her album. Britney could get this for sentimental value, but VMA voters have no problem splitting up their top prizes. Last year Rihanna won video of the year while Fergie nabbed this category.
Best Female Video: Guru's Ranking 1) Mariah Carey, “Touch My Body” 2) Rihanna, “Take a Bow” 3) Britney Spears, “Piece of Me” 4) Katy Perry, “I Kissed a Girl” 5) Jordin Sparks, “No Air”
This is a tight race. Mariah Carey and Britney Spears have never won a VMA. Both artists are overdue. I think Mariah Carey is the front-runner. Comical music videos usually win. Unless MTV decides to award Britney to make up for her career-suicide performance last year just for the headlines.
Rihanna had the most music videos released this year. She may upset. Fergie had the most music videos released last year and won this category last year. I think Katy Perry is more likely to win best new artist in a video instead of this. I don’t see Jordin Sparks winning. (Los Angeles Times)

"I'LL BE LOVIN' YOU U TIME" UK REVIEW
The third single from her E=MC2 album sticks rigidly to the formula that made Mariah a superstar again after the Glitter fiasco: midtempo R&B beats, cooing choruses and a vocal performance that's surprisingly restrained from a woman with eight octaves at her disposal and no-one to tell her what to do.
Yet, in spite of its predictability, "I'll Be Lovin' U Long Time" still makes for a satisfying listen, sounding classy, effortless and as summery as a glass of rosé in the garden after a work. Plus, as with most things Mariah does these days, there's an intriguing hint of strangeness lurking just beneath the surface - who else would name a song about eternal dovotion after a line from Full Metal Jacket? MC BRANDED RIDICULOUS
Mariah Carey's diva-ways have been called out once again -- with the pop superstar being branded "ridiculous" by a British TV presenter. Fiona Phillips -- host of UK breakfast program GMTV -- says, although the Touch My Body singer is good with her fans, she gives a terrible interview.
Phillips explains, "She's ridiculous. She'll switch positions until she thinks she's arranged herself into the most flattering one. And then she won't dare move a muscle for the duration of the interview. "I speak as I find and she's just rude. She's brilliant with her fans but every time I've interviewed her she's been awful.
"You see people like Mariah being followed by this procession of people all looking worried and scrabbling along like complete toadies." Mariah, 38, has previously dismissed rumors she was a diva, insisting she was simply misunderstood. (showbizspy)
