MARIAH CAREY'S MUSTACHE STILL NOT IN THEATERS SOON | February 27, 2009 |
More speculation today surrounds the whereabouts of Precious (née Push: Based on a Novel by Sapphire), the celebrated, Benjamin Bratt-terrifying drama that won last month's Sundance Film Festival before tumbling into bidding-war lawsuit limbo.
We'd really hoped this one would be visiting your neighborhood sooner than later. Alas, Precious, featuring Mariah Carey, Sherri Shepherd, Lenny Kravitz, lauded newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, and Mo'Nique in a career-defining performance as an abusive mother from hell, quietly disappeared this week from its prestigious closing-night slot at New York's New Directors/New Films festival. Sources point to the studio's open-ended legal standoff with Harvey Weinstein as a serious threat to seeing a deglammed, mustachioed Carey back on the big screen any time soon.
It's probably the most significant such drama since 2005, when Fox Searchlight jacked Jason Reitman's Toronto Film Festival hit Thank You For Smoking from the dozing Paramount Vantage. And in any event, it's a 180-degree reversal from Precious's trajectory out of Park City, where news of a big-time deal with Lionsgate, Tyler Perry and Oprah Winfrey accompanied its Grand Jury Prize. That wasn't the only accompaniment, however; The Weinstein Company soon intervened, claiming that they had a deal to release the film domestically. Breach-of-contract suits and countersuits followed - none of which are yet resolved, we hear, indefinitely postponing Precious's appearance anywhere outside Sundance.
Meanwhile, a Lionsgate representative told us this morning that the film is on track for a fall release. Here's hoping; Harvey shouldn't go hogging all the awards-season fun.

MARIAH PREGGY? | February 27, 2009 |
Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon were spotted leaving a Beverly Hills office building. Were M & N visiting a fertility clinic?! Rumor has Mariah, 38, and Nick, 28, were visiting a pre-natal specialist, and they used a decoy limo in an attempt to throw off the paps!
The two have been fighting pregnancy rumors for months, but at the Sundance Film Festival in January, the lovebirds revealed to "Extra" they weren't too sure about babies. Mariah said, "We don't know!" and Nick added, "Yeah, we'll let nature take its course!" Mariah and Nick tied the knot in April 2008.

MARIAH CAREY MAKES UGLY BID FOR FILM SUCCESS | February 27, 2009 |
The pop diva plays a dowdy social worker in her latest movie – but will the tested route to acting credibilility work for her?
Glamorous pop princess Mariah Carey has cottoned on to the first rule of “serious acting”. Make yourself plain, persecuted or ugly, and the critics will sing your praises from opening scene until end credits.
Her surprisingly naturalistic and gritty role as harassed social worker Mrs Weiss, in the film Push: Based On the Novel By Sapphire, sees her replacing hot pants for office clothes and leaving her entourage in the trailer. And all to a very effective end. “Uglying up” is a road well travelled for the determined female thesp who wants to be seen as more than just window dressing, most notably Charlize Theron, who slummed it to play serial killer Aileen Wournos in Monster, and bagged herself a best actress Oscar in the process.
Another hit was Nicole Kidman’s prosthetic nose in The Hours, and – in the later scenes at least – Kate Winslet’s ex-Nazi jailbird in The Reader. What’s unexpected about Carey’s performance (complete with pink scrunchie and prim checked jacket) is that, because she’s so totally preened and polished in every guise you have ever seen her in before, she’s barely recognisable. Of the five people I showed this clip to, three genuinely had no idea who she was.
The film, currently at the centre of an equally ugly distribution tussle between Lionsgate and the Weinstein Company, stars Mo’Nique and a strong performance by newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, who plays the victim of familial abuse.
But it’s Carey’s cameo that grabbed the headlines at Sundance earlier this year. Why there’s even a hint of a moustache if you look closely enough. For an actor whose big screen debut, Glitter, in 2001, became the ultimate pop star-vehicle car crash, Push could be the role that leads Mariah on to genuine acting glory. What’s interesting is that she not only accepted such a downtrodden, small (yet pivotal) role, but that director Lee Daniels gave her the chance to shine: he clearly had vision where others did not.

CAREY TO GUEST ON CANNON'S TV SHOW | February 27, 2009 |
Nick Cannon has won over producers as the new host of US TV show America'S Got Talent - by enlisting his wife Mariah Carey to make a guest appearance. TV bosses announced the actor/rapper would replace Jerry Springer as the show's MC earlier this month (Feb09).
And, according to America's In Touch magazine, Carey has agreed to join existing judges Piers Morgan, Sharon Osbourne and David Hasselhoff for a one-off episode this summer (09).
An insider says, "Mariah is a superstar and rarely does TV appearances, but this is for her husband. In addition to her stint as a guest judge, she's even planning on being a regular in the audience." The couple wed in April (08) after a whirlwind romance.

MARIAH CAREY GOES ON MASSIVE SHOPPING SPREE | February 26, 2009 |
Recession? What recession? Pop diva Mariah Carey doesn't have to bother with things like "recession" or "budget" because she clearly has money come out of her ears. Mimi just went on a 4 hour lavish spending spree in Los Angeles, buying up more than $200,000 worth of chairs, sofas and furnishings from a trendy Melrose Avenue boutique.
And the singer didn't want to be interrupted while she shopped so her entourage, which included hubby Nick Cannon, closed down Kreiss Showrooms so she can shop in peace. One insider says, "It was like a raid - the shop was closed down and her huge minders stood guard at the door. Mariah clearly knew what she wanted, but took her time making sure she got the right matches and designs. She has terrific taste."
Among the things she spent major cash on were contemporary chairs and sofas from the company's Gatsby range and several chairs in beige and taupe with dark wood frames in rosewood and mahogany. How many chairs can two people have in one home? She spent $50,000 an hour on chairs, which is more money than most people make annually. On the bright side though, she's helping out the economy... Paris Hilton style.

MARIAH HOOKED UP NICK WITH AMERICA'S GOT TALENT | February 23, 2009 |
You have to admit it was a shocker when Mariah Carey's hubby Nick Cannon bagged the job to replace Jerry Springer as the host of America's Got Talent. Well I hear that Miss Carey had a lot to do with Nick being hired. A source close to the show reveals: "Mariah was determined to get Nick a big job in Hollywood - and she wasn't hiding about it. She was running around town touting his talents and trying her hardest to get him a gig on a big show. It helped that Mariah performed on X-Factor in the UK at the end of last year and got talking to the shows producer Simon Cowell after filming ended. She mentioned Nick would be a talented host. Simon had him audition and he was perfect."
But Simon Cowell also had another person in the frame - So You Think You Can Dance host Cat Deeley. The star also auditioned too for the role on America's Got Talent but when it came down to the decision making they went for Nick - as Cat couldn't commit to the show because of her involvement on the dance show. A source adds: "Simon still likes the idea of working with Cat Deeley on one of his shows in the future."

MARIAH ATTENDS THE 2009 INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS | February 23, 2009 |
Mariah hit the red carpet at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday, Feb. 21 in support of her much-herald acting role in the soon to be released film "Precious", (previously titled "Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire") the story of a teenage girl living in Harlem who is struggling to shape the course of her life. Walking the carpet alongside director Lee Daniels, Mariah stated that she was "just honored to be a part of it. It's really something that's so strong and different and I think that it's really going to enlighten a lot of people and help a lot of people." Mariah plays a social worker in the film with comedian Mo'Nique and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe.
"Precious" debuted at Sundance and quickly became the talk of Park City, eventually earning the Grand Jury and Audience awards. Mariah lamented that she missed the big Sundance moment for "Precious" at the award ceremony in Utah in January. "I wasn't able to be there for when he won all the awards," she said before playfully being interrupted by Daniels. "Where was she?" he mocked the singer. "Obama was more important," he laughed, referring to Mariah's trip to the inauguration that interfered with the Sundance festivities.
Clearly proud of the film and all its early success, Mariah called the acclaim "great, because I know how much [Daniels] put into the film. And all of us who participated in the movie, we feel so attached to this." "Precious" has been picked up for distribution by Lionsgate and will be released later this year.

MARIAH CAREY CHATS IT UP AT THE SPIRIT AWARDS | February 23, 2009 |
Never one to shy away from the spotlight of an awards show, Mariah Carey headed out to the Santa Monica Pier on Saturday (February 21) for the 2009 Film Independent's Spirit Awards. While making her rounds on the blue carpet, Mimi was asked about her feelings on the headline-dominating Chris Brown/Rihanna situation. Not willing to get in the mix, Carey quickly replied: "No, absolutely no comment."
Talking to MTV, Carey was much more talkative when it came to her new movie "Precious", which hits theaters later this year. The film tells the story of a teenage girl living in Harlem, with Mariah saying that she was "just honored to be a part of it. It's really something that's so strong and different and I think that it's really going to enlighten a lot of people and help a lot of people."

2009 INDEPENDENT SPIRIT AWARDS RED CARPET | February 23, 2009 |
It's always kind of jarring to see Mariah Carey dressed sexy, yet appropriately here on the red carpet at the 2009 Independent Spirit Awards. In a simple black summer dress, Mimi shows off her stems while wearing a pair of black, wedge sandals.
The singer isn't usually a regular on the independent film circuit, but this year her promotion of her film Tennessee had her making the rounds at premieres and the Sundance Film Festival. Granted, it is fall, but the event was held at Santa Monica at the beach, so it's actually rather amazing that Carey isn't wearing a bikini. I mean, she's even wearing a demure white cardigan to cover her shoulders in case it gets chilly.

MC PROUD OF ROLE IN "STRONG AND DIFFERENT" FILM 'PRECIOUS' Mariah Carey has known her share of controversy over her markedly up-and-down career (currently on an upturn thanks to a successful album and a role in the critically lauded film "Precious"), and she's never been one afraid to share her opinion on matters. However, one topic had her clamming up on the red carpet at the Independent Spirit Awards on Saturday (February 21) — when asked what she made of the Chris Brown/ Rihanna situation that is dominating the news at the moment, she was unequivocal: "No, absolutely no comment," she told MTV News.
Carey was much more loose-lipped when it came to talking about her much-heralded next acting project, "Precious," the story of a teenage girl living in Harlem. Walking the carpet alongside director Lee Daniels, Carey gushed that she was "just honored to be a part of it. It's really something that's so strong and different and I think that it's really going to enlighten a lot of people and help a lot of people." Carey plays a social worker in the film with comedian Mo'Nique and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe.
"Precious" debuted at Sundance and quickly became the talk of Park City, eventually earning the Grand Jury and Audience awards. The film marks a change for Carey, whose career on the big screen has been lackluster at best. Clearly, neither "Glitter" nor "Wise Girls" was feted at the Independent Spirit Awards — though the former did earn attention from the Razzies for what it's worth, garnering five nominations.
Carey lamented that she missed the big Sundance moment for "Precious" (at the time titled "Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire") at the award ceremony in Utah in January. "I wasn't able to be there for when he won all the awards," she said before playfully being interrupted by Daniels. "Where was she?" he mocked the singer. "Obama was more important," he laughed, referring to Carey's trip to the inauguration that interfered with the Sundance festivities.
Clearly proud of the film and all its early success, Carey called the acclaim "great, because I know how much [Daniels] put into the film. And all of us who participated in the movie, we feel so attached to this."
"Precious" has been picked up for distribution by Lionsgate and will be released later this year.

NEW MC INTERVIEW IN TELE-LOISIRS Below is a brand-new Mariah Carey interview published in this week's issue of the French TV magazine Télé-Loisirs. Successful singer Mariah Carey reveals her passion for France, its great fashion designers and its pastries in particular...
Télé-Loisirs. Could you live in France?
Mariah Carey. After New York, Paris is my favorite city. When I'm in Paris, I ask my driver to take me to the large avenues where there are a lot of fashion stores. I could buy everything within minutes.
What do you prefer in French people?
Haute Couture. I'm fascinated by the genius of some fashion designers. Attending a fashion show in Paris, it's like going to heaven. Paris is the capital of fashion.
What would you trade with a French?
I love pastries and your bakers are without any doubt the best in the world. Unfortunately, I have to watch my figure. But just looking at pastries in France is a pure delight.
What can you say in French?
Bonjour and Merci!
What's your biggest character defect?
I'm a very hard working person but I need to sleep a lot. I could spend hours in bed. I need to sleep well to stay at the top of everything I do.
What's the quality you're the most proud of?
Tidiness. At home everything has to be shiny. I'm a maniac I wash my hands at least twenty times a day.
What gets on your nerves?
It gets on my nerves when I think of all the sacrifices my parents had to make to succeed in life. When she was 16, my mother left Springfield, Illinois, to try her luck in New York where she met my father. Despite racism she married him.
What do you like?
I like working with my husband. Ever since I married, my music evolved a lot. Nick and I wrote a song for my new album. It's a real pleasure working with him. I hope we could work together again because it's great to be by his side.
What artists do you admire the most?
I think Meryl Streep is fantastic. I love Marilyn Monroe as well, like my mother who was fascinated by that woman, and Sissy Spacek too. There are so many people I admire I can't name them all.
What's your remedy against stage fright?
I go for a swim! It allows me to relax.
What's your motto?
What doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. For a long time I felt chained on a professional level in particular. Now I feel free at last. I suffered a lot from the the situation I was in. But now I feel like I'm invincible. I think everything happens for a reason or another.
What's your remedy when you're feeling blue?
Music and faith. When I listen to music I forget all my problems and believing in God allows me to face my doubts.
What's your favorite piece of clothing?
A skirt... a rather short one!

MARIAH: THE BALLADS SHOWCASES BLOND DIVA'S GREATEST SLOW JAMS Eighteen of the greatest songs of the best-selling female artist of all time on one album. What can I say, but Mariah Carey's Mariah: The Ballads is a testament to her nearly 20-year career - a career she built on singing love songs.
Carey is the first recording artist to have her first five singles top the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and was named the best selling female artist of the millennium by the 2000 World Music Awards, after selling 200 million albums.
She also has the most No. 1 singles for a solo artist in the United States, so any album featuring Carey's best love songs can't be a bad album. It's impossible - unless Carey's high octave, window shattering voice and huge choruses aren't your thing.
Although Carey has already produced two greatest hits albums, including # 1s and Greatest Hits, Mariah: The Ballads is simply a collection of Carey's most popular love songs, the ballads. The album features songs Carey sang early in her career from her time at Columbia Records, while excluding her more recent music with her current label, Island Records.
While her current music is mostly R&B, The Ballads features Carey's early days in pop, showing off her softer side and focusing on her vocals.
Including some of what are considered to be the best ballads of all time, Mariah: The Ballads is an album any one can enjoy - not only the Carey aficionados. Carey's best are all there from "Without You" to "My All" to "Always Be My Baby."
The album also has Carey's famous duets that diversify the album, including "One Sweet Day" with Boyz II Men, "I'll Be There" with Trey Lorenz, "Endless Love" with Luther Vandross, "When You Believe" with Whitney Houston and "How Much" with Usher.
The first single on the album is, of course, "Hero," one of Carey's signature songs from her fourth album, The Music Box.
Starting the greatest hits album - after Mariah's nearly 20 years in music with the ups and downs of her career and the public displays of her worst breakups - "Hero" can be taken as a symbol of Carey's own inner strength, her ability to rise beyond discouragements, and still produce good music.
Carey's debut single "Vision of Love," in which she set off the melisma trend with her high octave voice, is also featured. This song, which started off her career, completely reflects Carey's success. The vision of love Carey sings of regards her eternal gratefulness to God for the realization of her dream of becoming a singer. It goes without saying that The Ballads proves that Carey's dream came true - probably more so then she could have ever imagined.
Also from The Music Box, "Dreamlover" breaks up the slow rhythm of the album. Pushing the limits of a ballad, "Dreamlover," in which Carey sings of her dream man, adds more pep and variety to the 15 love songs preceding it. With its upbeat tune, "Dreamlover" seems to be strategically placed to lighten up the mood.
Mariah: The Ballads, with its early 1990s beats, uncensored lyrics, and full blown choruses, makes you feel as if you time traveled back to when high-tech background music, digitally enhanced vocals, and lyrics about only drugs, sex and shooting had not surfaced yet. Listening to "One Sweet Day" with Boyz II Men supporting Carey only reinforces the odd nostalgia. It's refreshing in a cliché sort of way.
The album certainly takes you back to Carey's early success, reminding you of how this Long Island native climbed to the top of the pop charts. You're transported to when Carey ruled the radio with her signature wildly curly hair, her skin-tight black jeans and high octave voice.
Although the album isn't really necessary, since Carey already has two greatest hits albums, plus a remix one, The Ballads does come in time for Valentine's Day. A marketing ploy? Perhaps, Carey released the album to merely reflect the success she has had in her return to music since 2005, to show how far she has come and what she has accomplished. If that's the reason, it worked.

A SNEAK PEEK AT MARIAH PERFORMANCE IN "PUSH"
A first look into "Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire" has been put forward. In the one-minute video footage of the Lee Daniels-directed drama, it can be seen that Mariah Carey's Mrs. Weiss tries to dig up the truth behind the relationship between Gabourey Sidibe's Clareece 'Precious' Jones and her father.
Talking about her role in the movie during a press conference, Carey said, "Lee was encouraging us to go there. He was encouraging us to continue to go as deep as we could and to kind of just throw everything aside and really have an experience." She further added, "This should be required and the people should have to see this because people that don't know that this exists within the world, they need to be educated about it. And I think kids growing up, seeing something like this, this will change. This will help change and help take us to where we need to go."
Winning both the Grand Jury Prize and Audience Award in the U.S. Dramatic Competition at 2009 Sundance Film Festival, "Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire" tells the story of an overweight, illiterate teenage girl. Abused by her mother and raped by her father, she, instead of being swallowed by depression, tries to break from the chains of ignorance by digging deep into her own resources.
Directed by Lee Daniels from a script written by Damien Paul, it stars Gabourey Sidibe, Mariah Carey, Mo'Nique, Paula Patton and Lenny Kravitz. The drama movie is yet to get a release date.

OPRAH GIVES MC'S NEW DRAMA A PUSH Looks like Sundance winner Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire may be getting the extra nudge it needs to become a hit at the box office.
Lionsgate has reportedly paid upwards of $5 million for the North American distributing rights for the film according to Variety.
And as if that’s not good enough, the trade paper also reports that Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry will market and promote the film through their respective companies, Harpo Films and 34th Street Films.
Push, which stars Mariah Carey, Lenny Kravitz and Mo’Nique, is only the third film in Sundance history to take home both the grand prize award, and the audience award in the U.S. dramatic competition.
The story follows an illiterate African-American teen in Harlem, who is about to give birth to her second child when she is accepted into an alternative school.
“I’ve never seen anything like it. The moment I saw ‘Push: Based on the Novel by Sapphire,’ I knew I wanted to do whatever I could to encourage other people to see this movie. The film is so raw and powerful — it split me open,” Winfrey told the paper.
Perry added, “I am honored to join Oprah Winfrey and Lionsgate in releasing Lee Daniels’ exceptional film.”
