MARIAH & NICK PHONE-SEXY SECRET

September 30, 2009

Actor and comedian Nick Cannon keeps his audience entertained with his antics as the talkative host of America’s Got Talent. When it comes to keeping long-distance love alive with wife Mariah Carey, he’s no different. So how does the couple, married for more than a year, keep stoking the flames of passion?

“There’s lots of phone sex!” Nick, 28, told OK! at the Wii Fit Plus Fitness Club in L.A. on Sept. 29.

Which makes sense, Mariah, 40, traveling the country to promote her 12th studio album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel and her new scent, Forever.

STUDENT LIFE REVIEW OF MOAIA

September 30, 2009

Rating: 4.5/5 For fans of: Whitney Houston, Leona Lewis, Alica Keys Tracks to download: ‘H.A.T.E. U.’, ‘Standing O’, ‘Angel’s Cry’

Then there’s Mariah Carey, the best-selling female in the world. Her album sales in the ’90s trumped those of any other artist from that decade, as her five-octave range and her Mary Poppins demeanor catapulted her to the record books and into the hearts of countless fans and critics worldwide. Then came her oft-publicized divorce from her domineering husband/boss, Tommy Mottola, whereupon she took more control over her image—both musically and physically. As her sound grew more hip-hop and her skirts got shorter, her fanbase shifted a tad, but the Hot 100 number ones (of which she now has more than any other artist except The Beatles) kept pouring in. She was on top, never to be stopped, it seemed, by anything less than a meteoric event. Which is what “Glitter” was. The movie tanked, the companion album failed and she lost her mind. Hospitalized for “exhaustion,” she slowly faded from the spotlight and into obscurity. Although she returned with the biggest sales of 2005 with “The Emancipation of Mimi,” her use of guest rappers, pop and hip-hop producers and increased sexuality since 1997’s “Butterfly” has left critics, Lambs (diehard MC fans like myself) and the general public a little nostalgic for the glory days.

“Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel,” in stores Tuesday, is that return to form. The album’s 17 tracks delve into the New York diva’s psyche more like her 20th-century efforts. No more touching her body; introspection adorns this new album. Carey rehashes the themes she’s been using constantly since her 1990 debut, but they still aren’t old because of her deeply felt songwriting and expressive vocals. The song has club bangers such as the hit “Obsessed” and the marching band anthem “Up Out My Face,” but unlike some of her previous discs’ bass heaviness, these two are as fast as Carey gets. The rest of the album’s makeup is reminiscent of the “Vision of Love” and “Always Be My Baby” days. Especially poignant: “H.A.T.E. U” (Having A Typical Emotional Upset), with its choruses capped off by signature high notes; “Standing O,” with The-Dream’s ubiquitous repetitive hook; and the regretful ballad “Angels Cry.” By the closing track (and second single), a triumphantly executed cover of Foreigner’s “I Want to Know What Love Is,” it’s apparent that a certain someone has been heeding the advice to go back to her old style while maintaining relevance, something every artist wishes they had the ability to do as easily and successfully as Mariah Carey.

MARIAH CAREY: "I DON'T CARE WHICH SIDE I'M PHOTOGRAPHED"

September 29, 2009

Mariah Carey no longer demands that she only be photographed on her right side — because she “don’t care” anymore!

“I don’t feel like, ‘Oh, I have to be on this side, or I have to be on this side — I really had specific things that someone told me when I was 19 starting in the business and I listened to them. … I don’t care anymore,” Carey Joked.

“Sometimes I like that side — and [husband] Nick Cannon likes that side better anyway.”

“Nick is just a really supportive, very unique man who no matter what the differences are between us, he has been just such, like, a helping hand for me as a human being and a husband,” the pop superstar added. “I feel like I’m not by myself anymore, and no matter who I was with I always felt alone.”

Carey recently insisted she never wanted to become a celebrity — and is only interested in making music, movies and living her life.

“I went through a period of time when I was working my butt off, and that will get to you,” she said. “Now I know how to say no to things. I didn’t know that before.

“Being in the limelight is not easy and being around a lot of people all the time is also difficult.

“People who do what I do will know what I mean. When you’re in front of the camera, people are going to make their own opinions up about you and can say what they want to say about you.

“All I want to do is make music, make movies, live my life and enjoy things.”

MARIAH CAREY: "SONGS AREN'T ABOUT EMINEM"

September 29, 2009

Mariah Carey insists her album isn't full of tracks aimed at Eminem, despite reports her war of words with the rapper is behind her new songs.

In a new Los Angeles radio interview, the R&B star refused to even mention her former friend - but hinted Eminem is wrong to poke fun at her and husband Nick Cannon in his latest hits.

She told Ryan Seacrest, "Eight years ago, maybe I knew that person, kind of, in a very platonic way and yet they're still using my name in songs in order to boost their career, which I don't think is working.

"It's just obsession... Anybody who would write a song about somebody and try to say nasty, disgusting things about them eight years later, when they're married, I'm like, I don't think so."

And Carey is urging the media to stop reading too much into her new songs - they're not all about Eminem: "If I write a song, called Why Are You So Upset With Me, and people are seeing that person in the song, that's not my problem."

MUSIC NEWS: MARIAH CAREY

September 29, 2009

After being blindsided by the film Glitter, the resilient R&B artist and actress Mariah Carey has not only re-risen as high as her glorious voice can go, she’s gone higher. Since her comeback album The Emancipation of Mimi in 2005, Carey’s been on a roll unmatched by any singer of comparable stature and her latest recording, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, isn’t going to stop it (nor will her role in the forthcoming film Precious.)

She’s always been a superlative singer, but she’s gotten better with every release — not just technically, but in the tangle of emotions she can evoke in a single note. Proof? Put Memoirs on your iPod on shuffle. If forced to choose favorites, we’re voting for the low-riding jam “More Than Just Friends” and the transcendent Foreigner cover “I Want to Know What Love Is.”

MEMOIRS OF AN IMPERFECT ANGEL IN STORES NOW!

September 28, 2009

Today, September 28, Mariah Carey's new studio album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel is released. The critically-acclaimed new album features the smash hit "Obsessed" and the new single "I Want to Know What Love Is." The latter has received brave reviews from critics worldwide, whereas "Obsessed" was often called "The hottest song of the summer." To celebrate the release, we have gathered some comments from music critics.

Newsday stated that "'Imperfect Angel', though helmed by The-Dream and Tricky, still maintains a classic Mariah sound - especially on the soothing 'Angels Cry' and its accompanying prelude, and the personal 'Languishing', highlighted by a piano. No one is perfect - that's obvious. This CD is - that's obvious too."

The New York Times adds, "Ms. Carey [is restored] to the role she was born for: a singer unafraid of pomp, of ambition, of herself." Express Night Out concludes that "she has come back stronger after each pitfall, ultimately establishing herself as one of the most commanding pop presences of the decade."

HipHopDx also made some positive comments: "Foreigner's "I Want To Know What Love Is" that brings you right back to the moment you first heard "Hero" and knew that Carey wasn't leaving anytime soon." The source adds, "Memoir's plentiful ballads are indicative of one undeniable truth: no one rocks a mid-tempo like Mariah."

Finally, the Chicago Tribune also made some positive remarks, "Perhaps this was Carey's opportunity to prove that she can still climb those Everest-like octaves. Fortunately, the restraint she brings to much of the rest proves she's maturing into more than just a vocal acrobat." Be the first to own Mariah's new album today! NEW YORK TIMES REVIEWS MEMOIRS

September 28, 2009

When exactly did Mariah Carey stop singing? Even when she began flirting aggressively with hip-hop in the mid-1990s she was happy to impose her titanic vocals atop even the scrappiest production. And no matter how grimy her surroundings became – Ol' Dirty Bastard, anyone? – she remained inexorably Mariah, an impenetrable acrobat of technique.

Of late though, Ms. Carey has been whispering, as if newly scared of grand gestures. In 2005 it made for a surprise success with "The Emancipation of Mimi," one of her best-selling albums, but also one of her most deceptive. Though the melodies were straightforward, Ms. Carey was working hard, imbuing them with vulnerability and ache even while keeping her vocal power in check.

That nuance is mostly gone on "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," Ms. Carey's 12th studio album, which manages simplicity and clutter all at once. "Memoirs" is produced almost entirely by Ms. Carey with The-Dream and Tricky Stewart, who are masters of compensation, helping elevate mediocre singers – like The-Dream himself or Rihanna, on "Umbrella" – to something sublime.

On paper Ms. Carey shouldn't need that help, but her collaborators have underdelivered with largely listless arrangements just as she has thinned her voice to a hush. (The Dr. Dre-esque stomp of "Obsessed" is a notable exception.) On "Betcha Gon' Know (The Prologue)," she's almost mumbling, and the talk-singing on "Ribbon" and "Inseparable" is typically the preserve of far worse singers.

Even more troubling are the perplexing, jumbled lyrics full of daffy references and batty assertions. On the unintentionally hilarious "Up Out My Face," she insists, "Not even a nail technician/ with a whole lotta gel and acrylic/ can fix this, when I break, I break." On "Obsessed," she tells an ex, "See right through you like you're bathing in Windex." (Inexplicably, two songs, "Standing O" and "More Than Just Friends," echo "Umbrella," a move unnecessary and outdated.)

"H.A.T.E.U." has some of the ease of her recent successes, and "It's a Wrap" swings with girl-group melody. But it's the vintage notes here that resonate most intensely. She lets her voice go at the end of "Candy Bling," a cold splash of water that reminds us what Ms. Carey can do when left unfettered. The same is true of the smoldering "Languishing (The Interlude)," which despite its language of self-improvement seminars, is Ms. Carey at her most astute, devastatingly precise in tone and feeling; notably, it's the only song on this album untouched by Tricky and The-Dream.

It bleeds into the closer, a cover of Foreigner's "I Want to Know What Love Is," that begins in surprisingly modest fashion. Then comes the gospel-choir backup and the glass-shattering high notes, restoring Ms. Carey to the role she was born for: a singer unafraid of pomp, of ambition, of herself.

MUSIC REVIEW: CAREY'S 'IMPERFECT ANGEL' IS PERFECT

September 28, 2009

Mariah Carey, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" (Def Jam)

"I should crack you right in your forehead," Mariah Carey sings on the breakup tune "It's a Wrap."

The song, on her latest CD, "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel," finds a hungover Carey kicking her lover to the curb with particularly harsh words.

"Another early morning, and you walk in like it's nothing ... ain't no doughnuts, ain't coffee," she sings with attitude in her signature high-pitch tone. "Let me take a breath and regain my composure, told you more time, if you (expletive) up it's over."

But even though she's spitting venom, Carey's cooing on the doo-wop sounding song is so sensuous and sweet, even the song's intended target will remain under her spell — as will her listeners.

"Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" is an exceptional album that is about love — being in it, out of it, over it and trying to reach it. While the subjects are tried and true, they are never tired, thanks to Carey's approach, which mixes a good dose of humor and wit with her multi-octave voice.

"Betcha Gon' Know," the disc's opening track, sets the tone as Carey compares the seriousness of her broken heart to news programs like "60 Minutes," "20/20" and "The Oprah Winfrey Show."

Carey produced and wrote the majority of the album with Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Terius "The-Dream" Nash — and those hitmakers add their own touch to "Imperfect Angel" without overdoing it.

"Ribbon," which bumps with southern flavor, is radio-friendly, showcasing The-Dream and Tricky's signature sound. As does "Standing O," with its addictive hook.

Other notables tunes include "H.A.T.E.U." ("Having a Typical Emotional Upset"), a beautiful heartbreak ballad, and the top-notch "Candy Bling," a teenage love affair tune that finds Carey so in love she "can't delete your picture from my mind."

Some of the tracks use samples: "Inseparable" interpolates Cyndi Lauper's "Time After Time" and "The Impossible" finds Carey "layin' in the bed bumpin' Jodeci." The latter samples the R&B group's hit song "Forever My Lady."

"Imperfect Angel," though helmed by The-Dream and Tricky, still maintains a classic Mariah sound — especially on the soothing "Angels Cry" and its accompanying prelude, and the personal "Languishing," highlighted by a piano.

No one is perfect — that's obvious. This CD is — that's obvious too.

CHECK THIS TRACK OUT: "It's a Wrap" joins tracks like "Vision of Love," "Always Be My Baby" and "We Belong Together" as a classic Mariah song.

MARIAH CAREY'S INSPIRATIONAL SONG

September 25, 2009

Mariah Carey hopes 'Obsessed' will be an anthem for stalked and abused people.

The 40-year-old singer, whose recent track is believed to be about her former relationship with rapper Eminem, has denied the single was based on their romance but believes it has healing qualities.

She said: "I wouldn't ever call anyone an inspiration for that song. But I'm happy all the people who have been stalked and abused now have an anthem."

The single's music video shows Mariah apparently dressed up as Eminem, in which she said he was "delusional" for hinting they had slept together in his track 'Bagpipes from Baghdad'.

Mariah - who is married to actor-and-rapper Nick Cannon - says her new LP 'Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel' sounds as though her previous 11 studio albums have been put through a "blender".

She explained to the USA Today newspaper: "There are songs on there that are just saying to men, 'I don't need you.' It was going to be about women's empowerment.

"There's a little bit of almost every album I've done on this new one. It's like I put everything in a blender and made drinks for my friends. They're festive drinks, though some are bittersweet. I'm at such a good place in my life, and that allows me to be honest. And to enjoy things."

MC DEDICATES NEW ALBUM TO MICHAEL JACKSON

September 25, 2009

Mariah Carey’s new album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel includes a dedication to Michael Jackson as well as her late pastor. Mariah performed “I’ll Be There” at the King of Pop’s memorial service at the Staples Center in July.

This album is dedicated in loving memory to the King of Pop, Michael Jackson, and to my Pastor and Spiritual Father, Bishop Clarence Keaton of True Worship Worldwide.

MARIAH CAREY IS IN A HAPPY PLACE WITH PROJECTS, LOVE LIFE

September 25, 2009

Mariah Carey could really use a nap. After a few hours of restless sleep, she rose at 4:30 a.m. to prepare for a performance in Central Park to promote her new album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. In the past, this scenario would have been a source of anxiety for the singer, who has long struggled with insomnia and worried about its effect on her famously fluid, multi-octave-spanning voice.

But sitting in her hotel suite as evening approaches, Carey, 39, seems alert and unruffled. "I felt really good about myself today," she says. For starters, she got positive feedback on the morning gig, taped live for The Oprah Winfrey Show, from her backup singers. "They're really talented, and they don't give me compliments all the time."

Another factor contributing to Carey's contentment is sprawled on the bed behind her, sleeping soundly — or at least pretending to. "Nick, I know you're awake," she says teasingly, as actor/rapper/TV host Nick Cannon, to whom she has been married for 17 months, stirs and mumbles, "Uh-uh."

Before she met Cannon, 28, "I wasted my time with stuff that wasn't really real, in my personal life," Carey says. "I was always more focused on my career. But now I have this support system."

The tracks on Memoirs, out Tuesday, hardly present a unified portrait of a blissed-out newlywed. The album "was going to be about women's empowerment," Carey says. "There are songs on there that are just saying (to men), 'I don't need you.' " The first single, Obsessed, accuses a wannabe beau of "lyin' that you're sexin' me," chiding him, "Finally found a girl that you couldn't impress." The song, which has sold more than 1 million downloads, peaked at No. 7 on Billboard's Hot 100. It recently topped USA TODAY's rhythmic airplay chart and is at No. 12 and rising in top 40 airplay.

In the video, Carey appears both as herself and in a couple of male guises, one of them a goateed, hoodie-wearing chap bearing a suspicious resemblance to Eminem, who launched a media feud in 2003 by suggesting in his Superman single that Carey had unrequited designs on him.

Asked if the rapper inspired the tune, Carey says, a bit coyly, "I wouldn't ever call anyone an inspiration for that song. But I'm happy (that) all the people who have been stalked and abused now have an anthem."

Carey insists, though, that Obsessed was crafted with a generous dose of humor, as was much of the material on Memoirs. Even the angelic reference "is a wink and a nod" to previous album titles, among them Butterfly, Charmbracelet and Rainbow. "People were saying, 'Oh, she's going to call her next album Unicorn.' There are so many jokes on this album. It still makes me laugh thinking of them."

Co-produced by Carey and contemporary urban/pop wizards Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Terius "The Dream" Nash, Memoirs was "a really fun project. We'd sit around quoting movies, having a really great time. Dream was literally rolling around the studio floor."

Mr. and Mrs. C

The process wasn't entirely lighthearted. Carey points to Languishing, a plaintive interlude preceding the album's closing number and second single: a gospel-flavored reading of the power ballad I Want to Know What Love Is, a hit for the rock band Foreigner 25 years ago. Cannon was instrumental in selecting the cover, which is positioned at No. 20 and No. 30 on the adult-contemporary and urban AC airplay charts, and climbing both.

"Nick and I talk about music a lot, and we were talking about that song. I knew that if I was going to do it, I would have to bring my own thing to it." Carey also credits the track's co-producer James "Big Jim" Wright, who honed his gospel chops with Sounds of Blackness, and American Idol judge Randy Jackson, a veteran musician and longtime Carey confidant who lent additional production. "I wanted more drums, and Randy got a drummer who works predominantly in church, which took it to a different level."

The label has furnished Memoirs with various bells and whistles, including a bonus enhanced disc with four remixes of Obsessed and two versions of the video. The CD booklet consists of 34 pages compiled with Elle magazine, featuring ads for Angel Champagne, Elizabeth Arden and the board of tourism for the Bahamas, where Carey has a home, and where she and Cannon wed after a whirlwind courtship.

Island Def Jam Music Group chairman Antonio "L.A." Reid, who served as co-executive producer of Memoirs, got the idea while reading "one of those niche magazines where they sell ad pages with luxury brands, then give the magazine away. I thought, 'We reach more people with our CDs than these (publications) do,' and we need more ideas for how to generate revenue. I'm having many conversations (about this) with other artists," among them Carey's labelmate Rihanna.

Carey, who approved all the merchandise, says, "I love Elle, and the products are all things that I like. I thought it would be good to incorporate these little bits of my life and share my happiness with fans that way."

Clearly, neither Carey nor Cannon, her second husband (she was married early in her career to Tommy Mottola, then chief of Sony Music, her record company at the time), is reluctant to advertise their domestic beatitude. In conversation, Carey pulls her shirt up ever so slightly to reveal a burnt-orange butterfly tattoo on her lower back, with "Mrs. Cannon" inked delicately down the stem. Cannon, in turn, has "Mariah" branded in sprawling black letters across his upper back.

The couple met in 2005 at the Teen Choice Awards, but started dating in March 2008, when Cannon directed and appeared in the video for Bye Bye, a single off her last studio album, E=MC2. "The first thing I said to him is, 'I'm going to call you Mr. C,' " Carey says. "And the first thing he said was, 'I'm going to call you Mrs. C.' And we just started doing that."

Later that month, it was Mariah's "anniversary." ("I don't call them birthdays," she says. "I refuse birthdays.")

"We were on this island, and my security didn't want people around me — I guess they were being protective — so they planned for him to be on another part of the island that night. But I snuck over to where he was and woke him up with a piece of pineapple, and we stayed up and talked all night. When he had to go in the morning, neither of us wanted to leave." They tied the knot just over a month later.

A precious opportunity

Carey's lucky breaks have not been limited to the romantic arena. Director Lee Daniels, who cast her in last year's Tennessee— one of several films in which she has quietly picked up good notices since 2001's aggressively maligned musical Glitter— thought of her again when he needed an actress to play a dowdy social worker in Precious, his adaptation of Push, Sapphire's acclaimed novel about an abused, underprivileged teenager trying to overcome her wretched circumstances.

Precious, which arrives in theaters Nov. 6, boasts Winfrey and Tyler Perry as executive producers and has already earned top prizes at the Sundance and Toronto Film Festivals. Carey's role was originally intended for Helen Mirren, but the younger star, who had read and loved Push, happened to call the director shortly after he learned that Mirren was unavailable.

"A light bulb went off in my head," Daniels recalls. He offered Carey the part, "but I told her, 'The only way you can do this is if you lose your entourage and come to set without any makeup on, and be prepared for me to make you look even plainer.' I actually had somebody on standby, in case she wouldn't do what I wanted. But she gave her spirit to me, and became the Mariah I know: a girl who listens and is loving and nurturing."

Carey concedes that assuming the character's glammed-down appearance wasn't easy. "I was like, keep me away from every mirror! But Lee gave me several gifts. He gave me what I needed to get to the truth of this woman, and he gave me a certain lack of self-consciousness. Because you can't be self-conscious and look like that."

Looking ahead

Still, Carey's confidence has its limits. The negative press surrounding Glitter and her subsequent breakdown stung, despite her ability to defy critics by rebounding with 2005's best-selling album, the-six-times-platinum-plus The Emancipation of Mimi. She would consider doing another movie musical, "but it would have to be with an incredible director, someone who's really a genius, because I've been burned by that."

She's susceptible to stage nerves, as well. Singing I'll Be There at Michael Jackson's memorial service in July, she was still shaken by the pop icon's unexpected death "and didn't know I was going to go on first." She delivered an emotional but vocally tentative performance. "I wish I had done him more justice." (Memoirs is dedicated "to the King of Pop" and Carey's pastor.)

Former Spin and Vibe editor Alan Light says Carey "faces the challenge that all those at her altitude face now. Nobody sells records the way she used to, even as recently as Emancipation of Mimi. How do you scale expectations when that's the field you've played on?"

Light is particularly eager to see how Carey's career progresses as she enters her 40s. "She is so much a pop artist, and has so affiliated herself with urban musicians, and that's a young person's game. It would be good for her to get out and sing in front of people more, re-establish herself as a vocalist, because that's her strength."

Carey, who last toured in 2006, did two Las Vegas shows recently and has another pair scheduled for October, but she still isn't sure when she'll do a concert trek again. She has plainly thought about embracing more grown-up challenges. Having or adopting children is one consideration, "though I'd want to be in a position to handle that as well as possible." As Memoirs' title suggests, she's inclined to look back now and then — but not, these days, with anger or regret.

"There's a little bit of almost every album I've done on this new one," Carey says. "It's like I put everything in a blender and made drinks for my friends. They're festive drinks, though some are bittersweet. I'm at such a good place in my life, and that allows me to be honest. And to enjoy things."

MC: I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE KIDS

September 24, 2009

Mariah Carey recently admitted to Barbara Walters on her Sirius XM Radio show that she "would like to" have kids one day. Some are speculating that the songstress is already expecting her first child. Mariah is pictured above on Wednesday (Sept. 23) in NYC with her hubby, Nick Cannon.

“I would like to do that,” Mariah told Barbara of having children. “My thing about right now is that I have to put this album out and the movie, Precious.”

Co-host Bill Geddie reminded Mariah, “You know what they say, there’s no good time.” The 39-year-old Glitter actress was quick to reply that she is simply too busy right now, “There is a little bit of a better time than when you’re promoting a move, album and a fragrance."

Mariah's 28-year-old hubby commented earlier this year on their plans for children in the near future:

"When you start a union, that has to be one of things that is on the forefront of your mind, but we're so busy with everything else. We love each other, so we're constantly in practice. We're going to let nature take its course, but the course is not a long one."

PRECIOUS WINS MAIN PRIZE IN TORONTO

September 20, 2009

Precious, a gritty movie produced by Oprah Winfrey and featuring singer Mariah Carey, has won the main prize at the Toronto Film Festival.

It won the award voted for by film fans, taken last year by eventual Oscar winner Slumdog Millionaire.

Director Lee Daniels said he made the film "for every person who looked in the mirror and felt unsure about the person looking back".

Precious stars actress Gabourey Sidibe in her first major screen role.

The film gained a warm critical reception when it premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January and is due to be released in cinemas in November.

It tells the story of Harlem teenager Precious, who is illiterate and expecting her second child.

The movie also features rock star Lenny Kravitz in one of his first acting roles.

MARIAH CAREY ROCKS 'OPRAH' IN CENTRAL PARK

September 20, 2009

She’s always a treat to hear live, and earlier today (September 18) Mariah Carey gave a killer performance on “The Oprah Winfrey Show.”

Joined by hubby Nick Cannon, the “Always Be My Baby” songstress took the Central Park, NYC stage to promote her upcoming album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, which hits stores and online retailers September 29th.

This past weekend, Mariah was up in Canada promoting her new film “Precious: Based on the Novel ‘Push’ by Sapphire” as part of the Toronto International Film Festival.

Ms. Carey and Oprah worked together on the film, as Mariah starred while Oprah executive produced. Sounds like these two are quite a team.

September 15, 2009

We’ve already been exposed to her single “Obsessed”, but her label promises that she’s going to be delivering the goods with this album as well.

We’ve already told you about her remaking the 1980s Foreigner song “I Want to Know What Love Is”, but she’s worked with Tricky Stewart, The Dream and remix makers Seamus Haji and Paul Emanuel as well.

When the Foreigner song was initially released in 1985, it actually went to Number One on the Billboard charts. A lot of people are anticipating that just like Mariah set a record with “I’ll Be There”—making a hit out of a song that was a hit in the past—she may just do the same with the Foreigner ballad.

OPRAH & TYLER PERRY PUSH FILM 'PRECIOUS'

September 14, 2009

TORONTO — Lee Daniels has an Oscar-winning movie to his credit, but he still needed some big-time help to draw attention to his latest film about a girl who overcomes crushing abuse.

He got it from Oprah Winfrey and Tyler Perry: The two are executive producers of "Precious," which had a premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival over the weekend.

In an interview with The Associated Press, Winfrey said she was happy to help bring more attention to the film.

"Everyone needs someone to help them navigate," the TV talk show host explained. "I had Bill Cosby, Quincy Jones, Sidney Poitier and Maya Angelou who I look to. You can't do that on your own. Someone has to show it to you."

Daniels produced "Monster's Ball," which won Halle Berry an Oscar for best actress in 2002. She adapted "Precious" from Sapphire's novel "Push." It tells the story of an illiterate black girl who manages to rise above poverty, sexual and mental abuse. The film, which stars Mo'Nique, Mariah Carey, Paula Patton and others, won the Grand Jury prize at the Sundance Film Festival earlier this year and has been generating Oscar buzz.

Still, Daniels believes the cachet of Oprah and hit filmmaker Perry will help the film, which comes out on Nov. 6, build a greater audience.

Perry's latest movie, the comedy "I Can Do Bad All By Myself," opened at the top of the box office this weekend. Besides directing and writing the film, based on his stage play of the same name, Perry co-stars as his brash, cross-dressing alter ego, Madea. Perry's "Madea Goes to Jail" also opened at No. 1 in February.

"My movies are art films. So many people don't see art films. People do see Oprah and Tyler's movies and they do hear Oprah's word, so it is really good," Daniels said.

Carey, Patton, and newcomer Gabourey Sidibe, who plays the title role, gathered at a private cocktail reception prior to the movie's Toronto premiere where they later joined Winfrey on the red carpet.

"I couldn't wait to get here because I love it so much and I couldn't wait to see it again. I am just really excited," said Carey.

NICK CANNON'S MOM "LOVES MARIAH CAREY"

September 13, 2009

Nick Cannon has revealed that he is relieved that his mother "gets along wonderfully" with Mariah Carey.

The actor has admitted that his mother has strongly disapproved of many of his relationships in the past, but is pleased to know that she supports his marriage with the popstar, reports Female First.

Cannon said: "Her and Mariah get along wonderfully and I love that because my mum, if she don't like you, she'll let you know instantly.

"A couple of my ex-girlfriends got restraining orders on my momma because she'll pull up to your crib in an SUV and just wait."

He added: "She's the nicest woman in the world but you do something wrong to her son, she'll pull all the ex-gang member moves out... Sometimes they say something about me on the internet and my mum goes nuts on 'em.

"She just gets in there and just finds out where they live... Forget a bodyguard, I've got a bodymomma."

LAS VEGAS SUN: REVIEW OF MC'S 1ST PERFORMANCE

September 12, 2009

Few stars can be so comfortable in their fame that they take a mid-show break for a makeover while still onstage. But Mariah Carey, as pretty and delicate as fine crystal, took a few moments during her show last night at the Palms’ Pearl Concert Theater to recline on a white couch while two man servants touched up her makeup, teased her hair and provided her with a glass of bubbly.

“You like the hair?” she asked. Yes. We like the hair.

The scene didn’t feel at all out of place, either, during Carey’s coolly measured performance. I didn’t think it possible for a recording artist to perform a full 90-minute show without breaking a sweat, but Carey seemed to manage that, maintaining a glossy, picture-perfect appearance throughout. The real heat came from the crowd, which stood and shouted such messages as, “We love you, M.C.!” and “You’re beautiful, Mariah!” A few people near me appeared positively spellbound by Mimi, who still has that amazing, piercing voice.

As a result, Carey has appeal that stretches across seemingly every demographic (especially, it seems, gay men). It’s being reported by my man URL -- Ubiquitous Robin Leach -- that the hotel might be ready to sign Carey for an extended residency at The Pearl. Given her evenly paced performance, if that were to occur, there would be scant concern about artist burnout. As a sample, perhaps, of what’s to come, she’s back tonight to conclude her weekend in Vegas

MC RETURNS TO HOT 100 TOP 10

September 11, 2009

After eight weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 with "Obsessed," Mariah Carey leaps over the top 10 hurdle as the song breaks through to No. 7. "Obsessed" spent the last three weeks at No. 11, just shy of the top tally, but jumps to No. 7 this week - making the song Carey's 27th top ten on the chart.

That puts her in a tie for fifth place (with Elton John and Janet Jackson) for most top 10s in the history of the Hot 100. Ahead of Carey on the tally are Madonna (37), the Beatles (34) and Michael Jackson and Stevie Wonder (28 each). "Obsessed" holds at No. 7 on Hot 100 Airplay and returns to the top 10 of Hot Digital Songs (courtesy of 72,000 downloads last week).

NICK & MARIAH 'CHOW' DOWN

September 3, 2009

Treating themselves to a lovely dinner date, Mariah Carey and Nick Cannon were spotted at Mr. Chow restaurant in Beverly Hills last night (September 2).

The “Touch My Body” songstress and her hunky hubby looked loved up as they arrived through the front door. But as they made their exit, they elected the rear entrance to try and avoid shutterbugs.

And it looks like Ms. Carey may have indulged a bit too much in the alcoholic libations as she appeared to be a bit tipsy as she made her way to the car.

In a recent interview, Mariah denied that she’s ever been a diva, especially since getting married. “I’ve always been the same way. I don’t think I ever was wild or anything. If it makes people happy to say that I was then so be it. I’m married now and happier than ever but still I’m the same normal girl I have always been.”

MARIAH CAREY: MY DIVA AND TANTRUM YEARS ARE BEHIND ME NOW I AM IN LOVE

September 1, 2009

The diva years are over for Mariah Carey. These days she insists on only two things - not being perfect, and under no circumstances being 40.

In actual fact, she hit the big 4-0 four months ago, but don't go congratulating her on reaching the milestone unless you want to see the old Mariah bubbling to the surface.

She joked: "Read my bio again. Don't say the F-word around me.We can't allow these lies to spread."

In truth, it seems the more mature Mariah has mellowed to a certain extent. Just over a year ago she married 28-year-old actor-producer Nick Cannon, and the pint-sized songstress has been walking tall ever since.

Her reputation as the biggest-selling female recording artist of all time is secure, so Mariah is using her positive outlook on new projects. Her latest album, Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel, draws on her colourful and dramatic past while reflecting on her current happiness and married life.

And her performance in new movie Precious will help dull memories of the mauling she received after her last big-screen outing.

But does that mean we've seen the last of the petulant diva, infamous for extravagant demands?

She laughed: "There was the odd exhaustion moment which clearly now is a must in everybody's life - you can't be a celebrity these days and not go through that.

"I went through a period of time when I was working my butt off, and that will get to you. "Now I know how to say no to things. I didn't know that before.

"Being in the limelight is not easy and being around a lot of people all the time is also difficult. "People who do what I do will know what I mean. When you're in front of the camera, people are going to make their own opinions up about you and can say what they want to say about you.

"All I want to do is make music, make movies, live my life and enjoy things."

She was most recently seen at the Michael Jackson memorial service, only to hit the headlines when she took to Twitter to offer an apology for a wobbly performance.

"I regret sending that message but I was very emotional and I wasn't happy with my performance," she said. "But we all did our best to give Michael the send off he deserves. I just forgot the world could read that.

"I thought I was just talking to my friends.I shouldn't have done that because that was really only meant for Michael. to appearance the leaves read That was about him.

"It was difficult just to get through the song because I feel as if I have been listening to Michael Jackson's music my whole life.

"When I was a little kid I used to sing all his songs. The whole world suffered a huge loss. The whole world is going to feel this forever.

"I consider myself blessed to have known him, to have performed with him several times and to have sung at his memorial."

Now she's back with her 12th studio album, which will hit the shelves in four weeks' time.

"Each song is a story," she explained. "It may have come from my own personal experience. "It could have come from a friend of mine who has told me a story or something way back in the past. So it is an album that tells a story.

"People can listen to it and pick out certain songs that mean something to them - women especially. It's about women's empowerment and overcoming certain things.

"It's fun too though. It's got a little bit of something for everybody." The video for current single Obsessed certainly looked like fun. It saw Mariah taking to the streets of NewYork wearing a hooded top and sporting a goatee beard rather than her usual high heels and barely-there outfits.

She said: "I worked with Brett Ratner, who is a jokester, a comedian and a director of comedies.

"We talked a bit about different comedians playing the part of the stalker but at the end of the day we decided I would do it. It was so bizarre but a lot of fun."

Indeed, Mariah seems to be spending more and more time in front of the camera rather than in front of the microphone.

She'll next be seen in Precious, a film telling the story of a teenage mum given the chance to enrol in an alternative school in an effort to turn her life around.

Cast as a social worker, Mariah's latest screen appearance is sure to raise a few eyebrows.

She said: "I was a huge fan of Push, the novel the movie is based on.

A friend of mine passed me this book and said, 'You have to read this.'

"There is an intensity in this book that just leaves you stunned.

It changed my life when I read it.

"Then, years later I became friends with Lee Daniels and when I found out that he was doing the project I was so excited.

"Then it came together and he asked me to be a part of it. He was like: 'Let's just create this MrsWeiss character and make her into someone that we can all identify with'.

"She is a social worker and the complete opposite of me."

And Mariah admits that made playing the character a challenge.

She said: "It was like stripping away layers of myself as a celebrity, artist - or whatever you want to call it - and just becoming this person who has to actually reveal to the audience what's going on.

"She is the audience in a way. In that end scene where Mary tells her that Precious had been abused when she was three years old, she was shocked as the audience.

"So I had to take that all in and it was a big responsibility."

to But Mariah did have her own experiences to draw on - herVenezuelan father walked out on the family when she was just three and it was music that rescued her from what could have been a difficult life.

She said: "I remember starting out and being at a record company at 19 and having someone tell me, 'This is your good side and this is your bad side. Don't ever let anyone take any pictures of you from that side. You look terrible from that side', and so on.

"I created this whole complex, like I didn't already have enough of a complex.

"I felt very different as a bi-racial person. Growing up where I was, being half-black and half-white, was a weird and difficult thing because I didn't quite fit in either place and I moved around a lot.

"So when I went from that to this world it was like, 'Let's create an inferiority complex before we make this person go on TV and try to have confidence.' So it was all about building self-confidence.

"That's what I love about this story. I think it's going to help a lot of people."

NICK CANNON "SHE DIDN'T HELP ME GET 'AMERICA'S GOT TALENT' JOB.

September 1, 2009

Mariah Carey’s husband Nick Cannon has angrily denied claims his superstar wife is responsible for landing him his job hosting America’s Got Talent.

Cannon is adamant his relationship with Carey doesn’t influence potential employers.

“I’ve heard all the rumors that in order for me to get the job Mariah had to say she’d come perform,” Nick insisted.

“Like she helped me get the job. I’ve heard all of those rumors but none of that stuff is true.

“What actually happened is she had a hit single out and we got the number one show on TV so it’s the only destination for someone to perform in front of that big of an audience during the summer. She’s a huge fan of the show.”

However, Cannon does take credit for Carey’s appearance on Simon Cowell’s hit TV show.

“They were looking for people and I kinda came up with the idea originally to debut her video on NBC and once that relationship got together, they were like, ‘Do you think she would come perform?’ and I was like, ‘Why not? Let’s figure it out!’” he said.

BAHAMAS TOURISM TO CO-SPONSOR MC'S NEW ALBUM

September 1, 2009

CaribWorldNews, NASSAU, Bahamas, Tues. Sept. 1, 2009: The Bahamas is now hoping a deal with pop star Mariah Carey helps to boost declining tourism numbers.

Reports indicate that Bahamian tourism officials have signed a deal to co-sponsor Carey`s upcoming album, `Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. `The deal is what Carey`s record label, Island Def Jam records, calls a `product integration deal.`

The actual amount of the promotional investment was not revealed but the new album, set for release later this month, will be accompanied by a 34-page booklet filled glossy adverts, featuring the Bahamas prominently along with the other top perfume, cosmetics and fashion brands who are seemingly underwriting the album.

Def Jam says it hopes the sponsorship template will be the first of many such arrangements with `more commercially minded` artists like Kanye West, Rihanna and Bon Jovi, according to its chairman, Antonio `L.A` Reid.

The Bahamas and Atlantis Resort recently hosted the Miss Universe pageant in hopes of also boosting falling tourist arrivals.
