MANAGER: MARIAH READYING NEW ALBUM

March 22, 2010

After breaking the story exclusively about Mariah Carey shelving her new "Angel's Advocate" LP, not only has the diva's manager Chris Lighty come forward to confirm the news, he has also revealed that the situation at her label is in "disarray" and that a new LP is in the works.

It appears management was compelled to speak up on the issue, as word of our report begun to spread on the net; Lighty not only confirmed the news to Mariah's top fansite, but also to fans on Twitter. He said: "We are looking to go possibly to another studio album or Christmas album. The decision hasn't been totally made yet. It's a creative process that cannot be rushed." In regard to the fate of "Angel's Advocate", he added "It won't go to waste," insisting that they are looking at a means of releasing the tracks.

Yet a much more frank Lighty opened up to disgruntled fans on Twitter, responding to one dissatisfied supporter saying: "That is an issue we are dealing with. The label is in disarray." It pretty much goes without saying that a "quick-fix" album is not the answer to MiMi's problems. Granted she may be having a tough time with her label, in being entirely honest, that isn't the only issue.

A change from within Mariah is essential if she's to enjoy the dizzy heights of success she had just a few years ago again. Such a change is something, I feel, will come over time. For a while now it's felt as if ol' MiMi has been making music in "auto-pilot" mode, aka doing it for the sake of it. Surely disappearing for a while, living a little, and giving herself more to experience, would benefit her music and image greatly.

I mean it would be so unfortunate if she dropped another album, still trying to sell her sex appeal - which expired about 10 years ago now. Time will tell...

OFFICIAL: MARIAH'S "ANGEL'S ADVOCATE" SHELVED

March 21, 2010

Following our exclusive report on the cancellation of Mariah Carey's "Angel's Advocate" LP, there has, today, emerged fresh reports indicating the record has officially been shelved. Prior to now an air of silence has plagued suggestion of the album's axe, with calls to Carey's rep going unanswered. However, as per CD Now's updated listings, "Advocate" page, which previously indicated a March 30th store date, now reads "Released Cancelled". Ouch.

It appears ol' Mimi's team are set to quietly pretend this remix LP was ever in the pipeline, which - truth be told - shouldn't prove too difficult; as no one knew/cared for the album in its original form. At this junction, it's perhaps best Mariah gather herself together, re-assess her musical output, and hit us with something worth buying/playing a few years down the line. A serious image assessment during this period too wouldn't go amiss either.

MARIAH CAREY'S "ANGELS ADVOCATE" REPORTEDLY SHELVED

March 21, 2010

There is a rumor circulating that Mariah Carey will not release a remix of "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" at all. The album titled "Angels Advocate" was supposed to be on sale on March 30 in the U.S. but That Grape Juice is reporting that the record has been shelved and that it is already official.

"Advocate" indeed was in the quiet zone in the last few weeks despite the approaching release date. CD Now which previously listed the album to hit the shelves later this month has changed the status to "Released Cancelled". Carey's camp however, has not responded to the report.

Released in September 2009, "Memoirs" could only peak at number 3 on Billboard Hot 200. Meanwhile, "Advocate" is to include tracks from the original album remixed by producers such as Timbaland, Jermaine Dupri, The-Dream, and Swizz Beatz among others. "Up Out My Face", the first single from the EP has been released last month, featuring the addition of Nicki Minaj's voice.

"NICK KNOWS ME WITHOUT THE MASK"

March 21, 2010

Worst actress of all time - Mariah Carey earned this title after her debut in front of the camera in "Glitter" (2001). And rightly so! Nine years later - and with a new love at her side - she found the courage for a new attempt at acting. And who would have thought: In the two-time Oscar winning drama "Precious," Carey demonstrates talent in the role of a social worker. A rare look behind the mask of the superstar - also because she doesn't wear any make-up. Shortly before her 40th birthday - on March 27th - she seems mature enough to break free from the image of a glamour diva.

Still, during the interview at the designer hotel "314" in Cannes, she hints that life has left some scars...

You are close to your fourtieth....
Stop, don't mention the bad f-word while I'm around. Please let's change the subject at once.

Okay - let's take another shocking subject. In "Precious", you appear without make-up. How terrible was that for you?

Not at all. And it wasn't only about not doing make-up and hair (styling). I was also filmed with horrible lighting and from an unflattering angle. They also wanted to put a fake nose on me. But it started to eat away at my skin - it's very sensitive, and so we removed it again.
Nevertheless, many people didn't recognize me, and I'm really happy about that.

How did your husband Nick Cannon perceive you back then?
He always sees me as I am - without any masks. And he also loves me as I am. Many people have prejudiced opinions about me and it is difficult to deal with that and say: "I'm not like that, I'm totally different." But now I have the strength to do that. I'm experiencing the happiest time of my life right now.

Nevertheless, it must have been a fight with your ego. You are someone who pays a lot of attention to how you look...
Of course, but what's most important for you appearance and look is your self-confidence. When I was young, I was still completely insecure. When I had an appointment with a record company at the age of 19, someone said to me: "Make sure you are never photographed from that side, because you look terrible from that side." The whole world tried to give me an inferiority complex. I had to learn to shake that off...

Nevertheless, it did look a bit strange to see someone with a glamour image like you have in a moving and dark social drama.
Most people think I was born in a magical bubble. Suddenly I jumped out and started to sing high notes. Big mistake: I'm not coming from a royal family, and I wasn't bedded on roses either. Some members of my family have had some bad fights in the past.

And you were right in the middle of the gun fire?
Actually, it's even embarrasing to me that the public learns about all that. All of that happened in my father's family, who were living in Harlem. I wasn't even allowed to talk to these people. Luckily, we had moved to Brooklyn. But I was still living in very modest conditions. And as I was the daughter of a black father and a white mother, I was always feeling like an outsider.

So how did the thought of being able to make it in show business come to you there?
Luckily, I had help. As a child I took refuge in music, and I also drew a lot of strength from my faith in god. And my mother gave me faith in myself. She was always saying: "You will become a star." People always say: "What doesn't kill you is making you stronger." And it's true, I went through such crap and earned my strength from it.

Is part of that crap also your marriage to your supporter Tommy Mottola, who you divorced again in 1998?
Without a doubt. It was a very difficult relationship, in which my ex-husband did a lot of bad things to me - not only emotionally, but in the most various ways. I don't want to say anything more about it now - it's in the past. But I have grown as a person because of it. In that marriage back then, I wasn't allowed to try myself at acting, either. My husband wouldn't allow it. Now I can finally do what I want to do as an artist.

But when you were doing your first steps as an actress, you fell pretty hard: "Glitter" failed with both the critics and the audience in 2001.
And why do we still have to talk about it nine years later? You shoudn't forget one thing: The movie came out on September 11th. I couldn't think of any worse date than that.

You are ok with it then?
It's not the worst film of all times. If I could turn back time, I wouldn't do it again. No matter how much I'd be paid for it. But back then, I was auditioning for different supporting roles - but nobody was going to hire me. So I went for it - but I realized at once that it was one big chaos. We didn't even have a finished script when we started filming.

Where does this need to prove yourself as an actress come from?
I want to express another side of myself. Yes, I love to be a glamorous singer, but I'm also going for the hard way. I want to get rid of all the layers of Mariah Carey and dive into another identity. It's just not that easy, because people perceive me differently. And I have to break through that.

THE BEST SINGERS EVER: THE UNOFFICIAL LIST

March 15, 2010

The oldest and most portable instrument in the world is the human voice. According to Wikipedia, "Singing is the act of producing musical sounds with the voice and (augmenting) regular speech by the use of both tonality and rhythm."

So regardless of whether you have good tonality and rhythm, anyone with a voice can sing. For example, Bob Dylan is a singer. So are Tom Waits, Courtney Love, Yoko Ono and Bjork. You may enjoy hearing them sing (I'm still waiting for the Yoko-Bjork "Duets" album myself), but are they technically good singers? Then there are singers like Celine Dion, Barbra Streisand, Michael Bolton and Sarah Brightman who are legitimately great singers, but does that make you want to listen to them any more than the others?

For the purposes of this list, I have examined several criteria that include vocal skill, unique vocal style and performance. In order to avoid major controversy, hurtful statements, and threats of bodily harm (I still don't know who gave those Manilow fans my home address), the following list is in alphabetical order, and therefore all who appear have equivalent merit for the purposes of the discussion that will inevitably follow.

Mariah Carey: If she would just shut up and sing... If not for the moronic blogs, dreadfully bizarre interviews, drunken speeches and unnecessary vocal acrobatics at every point in every song, she could just be the greatest pop singer ever. Vocally, her range is hard to top (sorry Whitney) but just once, I would like to hear her sing a melody as it was written. It will probably never happen, but thankfully at least she has the voice to make it more than bearable.

MARIAH CAREY: "UP OUT MY FACE"

March 12, 2010

Mariah Carey has always been a musician with an amazing instrument, but it has often seemed that she doesn't have much to say with it, except: "I want to be rich, famous, and adored, and if my voice doesn't convince you, how about my body?" Carey has been so well-known for doing whatever is necessary to advance her career that she inspired a 2004 Sonic Youth song about it. That song appeared on the band's Sonic Nurse album, and maybe it was inevitable that Carey's career goals would eventually lead her to nursing - naughty nursing.

Her song "Up Out My Face" is competent but unremarkable hip-hop product from the 2009 album Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel. The song itself has no nursing imagery, but in the uninspired video for the song's remix with rapper Nicki Minaj, Carey and her co-director (and husband) Nick Cannon put the naughty nurse right up in our faces.

Carey and Minaj appear in skimpy "nurse" outfits, complete with caps, white stockings, and high heels. The song, which will appear on Carey's 2010 remix album Angels Advocate, is actually a kiss-off to a cheating lover, so it would seem to reverse the standard naughty nurse theme of sexual availability. But the point seems to be to show the ex-lover (and us) just what he will be missing because Mariah and Nicki have moved on. And as we all know, there's no more crass and easy way to convey female sexuality than a "nurse" uniform.

In the video, "Mimi" and "Nicki" appear in different costumes, including as dolls breaking out of their boxes, and at other points in evening wear, celebrating. But perhaps the main theme for both stars, particularly Carey, is the naughty nurse outfit: a very short, tight white "nurse" dress revealing cleavage, complete with cap, white stockings, and high heels, all of which enable more effective pouting and preening.

The other outfits and props echo the red and white theme established by the nurse image. At a couple points, Nicki applies her stethoscope to Mariah's chest, checking her heart rate. At another point, Mariah pulls a bunch of bills out of her nurse outfit's cleavage and throws them.

Carey reportedly had a lot of fun making this video, and that shows in her interactions with Minaj. But the video is formulaic, with predictable poses and shots, and key lyrics at times displayed in large letters in case we don't get it (by the way, the main idea is "up out my face"!). The liberated doll idea really goes nowhere because there's no suggestion that the man was restraining Mariah; he was just cheating.

There are also appearances by a marching band, which plays the song in a reprise at the end of the video (as in the reprise following the original song on the 2009 album). But the marching band thing in pop is not exactly new either, and in recent years it has been an element of performances by artists ranging from Kanye West to Radiohead.

In the end, "Up Out My Face" is a competent urban track, with up-to-date production, an okay keyboard-driven hook, and lyrics whose swagger is generally uninspired and at times ugly. Nicki makes the song more fun, but the tossed-off quality of the video just accentuates what's weakest in the song, reminding us that it can be filed under the heading of what Carey's done for a long time: adopting "street" musical and lyrical elements in order to reach a broader demographic, and presenting herself as a sex object in an aggressively brainless way, a far cry from the inventive musical and visual work of sexually-oriented artists like Madonna or Lady GaGa.

Unfortunately, this "here are my breasts!" approach fits all too easily with the naughty nurse. This video seems to run counter to classic naughty nurse themes, as Mariah is telling a man to go away. However, it still associates nursing with sex, because the singer is showing her ex-lover what he has lost, as the lyrics stress so gracefully ("No you ain't getting it, no you ain't hittin' it").

But could it be that Carey and Cannon are subtly suggesting that the video stars will be "nursing" themselves - or each other, with that hot stethoscope action - back to health after this nasty breakup, moving on to a better relationship? Not likely, especially since there's no suggestion of a need for healing in the lyrics, which convey only bitterness and triumphal vengeance. Or are these "imperfect angels", in "advocating" for all women who have to survive such bad male behavior, commenting on another nursing stereotype (the angel), and even nurses' very real duty to advocate for patients? Lol, smiley face, have a nice day!

So it appears that the naughty nurse outfits are just another sexual cliché, an unimaginative way to help sell the video (that is, the remix album). And the images seem to have done their job: Well over two million people watched the video on YouTube alone in the first couple weeks after its late January 2010 release, and the naughty nurse theme got significant mainstream press coverage, such as in Marcus Barnes's January Daily Mail (UK) article, "Almost forty, but still naughty: Mariah Carey rolls back the years as a racy nurse in her brand new video." That piece also included plenty of naughty nurse still photos from the video.

Pop stars like Mariah Carey can actually use sexual imagery to sell their work without reinforcing the naughty nurse stereotype, which has undermined real nurses for decades, presenting their work as being all about female sexuality. The naughty nurse imagery that continues to permeate global pop culture tells people that nursing is just a tired sex joke, not a profession for educated men and women who need more clinical and educational resources if they are to keep saving lives. So maybe the image could get up out our faces.

NURSES TO MARIAH CAREY: QUIT THE NAUGHTY ROUTINE

March 12, 2010

The folks at the Truth About Nursing, a Baltimore-based group concerned about demeaning portrayals of nurses have a new target: Mariah Carey. Yep, you heard that right. The pop star's video for her song "Up Out My Face" takes the naughty nurse stereotype to a new level of low, according to Sandy Summers, the group's director. Complete with a booty-grazing nurse outfit, white cap and stockings, Mariah's version of naughty nurse has real nurses in an uproar, apparently.

The group has even launched a letter writing campaign urging Ms. Carey herself to "make amends by withdrawing the video from all distribution, avoiding the stereotype in the future and publicly apologizing to the nursing profession (in a music video perhaps!)."

Hmmmm, OK. I wonder, have any other Mariah Carey videos resulted in any formal apologies?

CAREY ON

March 10, 2010

Mariah Carey makes her 28th visit to the Adult Contemporary chart, as "Angels Cry" starts at No. 30. The song marks the first appearance on the list for featured artist Ne-Yo. The ballad is the second song from Carey's album "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" to reach the tally, following the No. 10-peaking "I Want to Know What Love Is".

Carey had not charted two tracks from the same album on Adult Contemporary since the title cut from "Butterfly" (No. 11) and "My All" (No. 18) in 1997-98. First released on "Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel" without Ne-Yo, the new version of "Angels Cry" previews Carey's duets/remix album "Angels Advocate," due March 30.

DEF JAM HONCHO DODGED THE MUSIC

March 10, 2010

Def Jam CEO Antonio "L.A." Reid canceled a key speech at a top music event with his staff claiming his son was seriously ill -- but he really panicked over facing questions about his future with the label, sources tell Page Six.

Hundreds of top music industry suits paid up to $1,000 each to hear Reid speak at the Billboard 2010 Music & Money Symposium at the St. Regis last week.

But hours before the talk, delegates were told that his son was in the hospital with a head injury and needed surgery. Reid has four sons, from 6 to 29 years old, as well as a daughter, 8.

"There was speculation among other music executives that this was not entirely the truth. Reid didn't want to answer questions about his future with Island Def Jam," a source said. "The move left organizers panicked with no speaker with just hours to go. Vevo CEO Rio Caraeff agreed to stand in."

The Post's Peter Lauria reported last month that R&B impresario Reid is under pressure to break a cold streak following the promotion of Lucian Grainge to CEO of Universal Music Group, which owns Island Def Jam. Following disappointing sales from artists including Rihanna and Mariah Carey, Reid has been ordered to rein in his spending and bring in a hit.

A friend of the dapper Reid -- one of the most powerful men in the US music business -- told us, "L.A. had to cancel because he was called away on family business, not because his son was ill. That was just a story that went around. He isn't afraid to answer questions about his future with the label. He is about to sign J.Lo [Jennifer Lopez] and isn't going anywhere."

A rep for Island Def Jam said, "It was unfortunate, but he was called out of town on personal business and hopes to be able to participate in a future symposium." Billboard declined to comment.

MARIAH CAREY FUELS PREGNANCY RUMORS

March 08, 2010

Mariah Carey took another pregnant pause this weekend when she attended several star-studded events with husband Nick Cannon in tow.

While speaking to inquisitive reporters at the Independent Spirit Awards on Friday night, the singer revealed that "something special" is about to happen in her life.

Carey, who attended the award show to support her film 'Precious," has been dodging baby rumors for months now. The 39-year-old diva said that she was "talking to a director about three movies."

She then teasingly added, "There's also something special on the way. I can’t say any more," reports the U.K.’s Mirror. While at Sunday night’s Academy Awards, the singer fueled tabloid fodder by looking even more curvaceous than usual in a blue Valentino gown.

According to HollywoodLife.com, Carey passed on alcohol at the awards show, opting to drink water all night instead. Though many are speculating Carey and Cannon are expecting, the singer’s rep told Gossip Cop that there is "no truth" to the rumors. Yet.

CURVY MARIAH CAREY FUELS BABY TALK

March 07, 2010

Mariah Carey was her usual fabulous diva self backstage at the Film Independent Spirit Awards -- tottering around on skyscraper heels so high she couldn't walk and having security prop her up all night.

The star, upstaging other actresses in a tight black dress showing off her famous curves, was celebrating her cast mates from "Precious," which swept the board at Friday night's awards at the LA Live arena -- seen as a more relaxed precursor to the Oscars.

Carey -- who famously once said, "I don't do stairs" -- had personal security to help her totter onstage. And she further fuelled baby rumors by telling Page Six that she had "something special" on the way.

A source said, "Mariah came out as a presenter but she was having trouble in her heels, which were eight inches high and so spiky, she accidentally stabbed herself in one foot before she was helped onstage.

"She seemed to be the only star hanging onto personal security. Outside the press area she seemed really giddy and was overheard saying jokingly, 'I don't know if I can do this!' And she didn't arrive and leave through an elevator like the other stars. She had a BMW limo pull right up to the stage."

Celebrating without husband Nick Cannon backstage, Carey did nothing to stop rumors that she's pregnant or ready to adopt, telling us, "I have a lot of new acting projects coming up. I am talking to ['Precious' director Lee Daniels] about at least three movies. But there's also something else very special on the way. I can't say any more."

"Precious" dominated the Spirits, winning Best Feature, Best Director, Best First Screenplay for Geoffrey Fletcher, Best Female Lead for Gabourey Sidibe and Best Supporting Female for Mo'Nique.

NEW SONG: MARIAH CAREY - "RIBBON (REMIX)"

March 06, 2010

Mariah Carey has been a busy woman lately. Having just ended her "Angel's Advocate" US tour and preparing for the release of her similarly titled remix album, another track from her new project has surfaced. The remixed version of "Ribbon" features the song's co-writer, The-Dream, and rapper Ludacris. "Angel's Advocate" will be exclusively released via Target on March 30th."

Remember back when a Carey remix meant that she actually returned to the studio and remixed the song? It seems that with all the new studio tricks available to artists today, she has decided to take the easy (and lazy) route with the handling of this project. This track features no new vocals from Carey and slightly altered productions to compensate for the "cut and paste" addition of The-Dream and Ludacris' verses. I hope she realises that half the effort yields half the results, so if the original "Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel" LP sold just over 445k copies, imagine what this remixed version will sell given her uninspired attempts at revamping the project.
